Learn how to point your domain to a new hosting provider!
In this video, we teach you how to connect an existing domain you own to a different hosting company with a few easy steps.
This is useful if you already have a domain that you own that is with one hosting company and want to switch to a hosting plan that better suits you compared to the one you currently have.
For this example, we point an existing domain on Google Domains to a new hosting plan on SiteGround. SiteGround offers great hosting plans and provides an easy connection for existing domains, followed by a WordPress installation straight after.

Pointing and transferring are two different things: is that right?

Correct, Lisa. Pointing is connecting your domain to a web host. The domain and hosting plan can be on two different hosting providers too. Transferring means moving the domain you purchased on one provider and adding it to your account on another. Hope this helps!

Hi Thanks for the directions. At 10:05, you showed the Google Domain Name server area. What do I do if the option "Use custom name servers" is not available?

Hi Lasia, thanks for checking out our video! It appears Google might have changed the menu around a little bit. Do you see a 'Custom name servers' tab like in the screenshot below? imgur.com/a/Wz0zJoG If that tab is available, you can click on that, then enter your custom nameservers and save the settings when you've finished. How about pointing your domain to 2 different servers - one to point to the email server and the other to point to the website sever. Is it achievable?

NDRS, depending on how you want your website and domain to be setup, you might need to change the A record or CNAME record for your domain for it to point to your existing website.

Can I point a name I just purchased today to a new host provider. Such as Porkbun to Bluehost. Can I do this the same day I purchase it, or do I need to wait 60 days. I am pointing not transferring?

Hi Lisa! Thanks for watching our video :) Pointing your domain means you are connecting that domain to a web host. The domain and hosting can be purchased from two separate providers too. So you can buy your domain through one provider and connect it with a hosting plan on another. Transferring would mean moving the domain name you purchased from your account on one provider and adding it to your account on another. Hope that makes sense! To answer your question, yes you should be able to point your domain which you just purchased to a new host provider without any issues. The steps would be similar to the ones shown in the video. I did this but I think it messed up my MX records. The DNS section of google domains is formatted a bit differently now. Any update?
