How To Polish and Paint Vintage Aluminum Flathead Heads

Now that the frame and body are nicely painted, its time to clean up some of the vintage speed parts to match the rest of the build. These Edelbrock heads were on the Mercury Flathead block that is going into the Ford Free-T. They are not in terrible shape but are weathered and show signs of use. Matt takes us through the process of polishing the sides of the heads, as well as the fins and lettering. Once polished Matt lays down some Eastwood 2k High Temp Engine Paint, in Gloss Black of course. These heads have the right amount of shine and pop to accent all of the other chrome items on the engine. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe to keep up to date on all of our builds and adventures!!

Let the haters hate. There's nothing more satisfying than taking something old and crusty and making it shine like a jewel.

Best way to clean aluminium casting is yes blast it but with baking soda. Makes it look like a new casting. Great for carbies.

To clean the lettering, I would use a small cloth with some lacquer thinners and wipe the letters off between coats. I have used this technique on finned rocker covers with no taping, I like the edges better, they look softer than the hard tape edges. Try it yourself, I bet you will like the results

Nice job Matt, I told myself after I built my 32 and put all the shinny dudads on it I was spending 3-4 hrs. polishing just to go out for a drive. I told myself the next one would have no shinny dodads just hit it with hose and go

I use Vaseline on the raised polished parts prior to painting. After I spray everything with paint I just go in with a rag and wipe everything off that has vaseline on it and there's no paint left and everything is shiny no more sanding after that.

Love it! Great attention to detail. Can’t wait to see it all together. Local old timers have warned me of buying old heads over new castings as they are “... always warped and you’ll fight getting them to seal forever...” I’d prefer old. What do you guys think about using old heads on new builds?
@pappabob29

I was wondering that as Matt was doing all the work on them. Hope the builder doesn't need to surface them which might mean damaging that nice polished finish in some kind of jig.

Use the loose leaf calico and blue compound. I hand finish with 400 dry then polish. This mainly on wheels but other items as well. As for all that masking, simply paint the area then carefully clean the fins up with thinners on a rag. A lot quicker and no sharp edges of paint to pick up later.

I've heard of the Vasoline idea before I was always worried it would contaminate the paint around it just from the residue but that's just me speculating. Years ago I polished all the aluminum suspension parts on a sprint car I was building. After that I swore to never again polish aluminum. Everything, your hands, your clothes, where you are working, turns black. I just did some aluminum nailhead valve covers painting in between the fins, but someone else polished them before I began paint!

you could cover the raised lettering with Vaseline before you paint and then wipe it off.

With how intricate it is I'd be afraid the vasoline would have covered areas surrounding it in the crevices, I'd rather sand off the faces then try and hope the vasoline didn't get somewhere I don't want it to be.. -Matt/ITG

John Hartley you can't letter vaseline on lettering. It can flow off the edge or even blow off the edge painting. Not the way to go to mask in this instance.

Matt, Of course the heads look incredible! Very nice work. Is there any concern that the paint will creep under the head bolts resulting in loss of preload after a few heat cycles? You might consider re-torquing the head bolts after every heat cycle for maybe a half dozen cycles until they stabilize. Good luck...... Joel

For hand sanding small details instead of using your finger use an art gum eraser. It is stiff enough to provide even pressure and soft enough to conform to the surface and not to tear the paper. Thanks for sharing, Charles

Nice attention to detail. It makes a huge difference. I seen a car show on TV the other day and they were all super nice builds until they opened the hood to show yukky untouched engine bays, it kinda killed the value of them. Even more important on an open engine bay car.

Great stuff, Matt, and you have a new subscriber! I use a Dremel for all the fine detail work, really saves these old fingers! Also, try baking soda for a blasting compound on aluminum, comes out real purty! 🤣 Very first engine I ever rebuilt was the 239 ci flatty in my uncle's '52 F-6, back in '95. Block cracked, so we swung in a newly rebuilt 239 in '08. We still run it in the 4th of July parade every year! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Qwb-VGOqzCc.html

But then you get compound everywhere and risk polishing off the paint or chipping it. I'd rather take my time taping then have to worry about touching up spots that got damaged during the sanding and polishing process.... It doesn't matter how you do it as long as you get to the same end result. This one is how I prefer to do it and is a bit more "controllable". No way is wrong just what I prefer. Thanks for watching! -Matt/ITG

@@IronTrapGarage If you let the paint gas out and it's hard you can polish and buff and wash off the residue with soap and water. Or you could have powdered coated them and done the same thing. Yours came out really good, don't get me wrong.

IronTrap Garage the fact that you think I'm angry fascinates me. it just looks like shit. looks like the guys that used to paint there valve covers one color and then highlight the script writing in another color. some people thought it looked cool. but really it was just an old stock trick to make it look fancy because they were to poor to do anything else. so what you think is cool because you think it's an old school look was really just because people were to poor back in the day to do anything else. when you ad a few years to yourself you will figure a few things out

I’m confused how will adding a few years do anything? Car styling is a personal preference. Not everyone has to like your style or mine. I appreciate the input as abrasive as it may be :p
