How to Polish Red Wing Iron Ranger | Mink Oil | Full Grain Shine

How to polish your full grain boots using mink oil. In my case, my Red Wing Iron Rangers. Not shown in this video, but highly recommended, is the cleaning of the boot welt. Dirt and debris can get snagged in the welt which could act as a sandpaper for your uppers and may cause your boot to deteriorate faster. Keep posted as I’ll be releasing a video on Welt care.

Good job! I would also wash the laces with dish soap and hang them on a door knob or hook to air dry overnight. Also, after applying the mink oil to both boots, you could heat them with a hair dryer to really get them to absorb it.

There are cautionary tales about using mink oil on the lace holes as they can stretch and pop out. So I think using mink oil as you do to be perfectly fine on a boot this thick, but I'd still avoid the eyelets. I have over oiled boots that had thinner leather and they lost all integrity and became like a leather sock. Don't think that would happen with an Iron Ranger... but still... not putting more than necessary sounds obvious, but something to keep in mind.

As far as I know redwing does not recommend mink oil for iron rangers. To each their own your boots doesn’t hurt me any. Silicone makes them less breathable and darkens. The leather cream or all natural conditioner is what they recommend I believe. I use the leather cream (neats foot oil). I think I’m their video they use the boot oil for amber harness. Hmm. When I bought my Iron Rangers, the shop guy told me to only ever use a tiny bit of Mink Oil, like dipping the tip of the brush into the can and then spreading that tiny amount over the whole shoe. Also, he said that I should only do that at most every six months. Otherwise I would risk making the leather too soft and the boots could lose their fit. After watching you drown them in oil, I'm confused...
@YeahBuddy
@YeahBuddy 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! Some are definitely more reserved about mink oil. I’ve not had a problem with fit after owning for close to two years. My dad always “drown” his Moc’s in mink oil and he had Red Wings for years! The amount of mink oil is really personal taste. In terms of timing, I think reapplication of mink oil will depend on how often you wear them. If you wear them every day, you may need to reapply after a few months. If you wear once a week, six months seems about right. Thanks for your comment and for offering different perspectives.

Nice video. I have a pair of Carolina 8” work boots, that I wear every day. I also use mink oil paste. I use a tooth brush, and work it into the leather. My boots are about 2 years old, and look new. I also like the dark color it provides, and don’t know why so many Iron Ranger owners are against this. I’m going to get myself a pair soon. I’m not an expert on the colors. Yours look to be the Amber Harness color? I think they look great. I’m an 11 wide in my boots. I’m obviously going to have them fit to me, but I’m interested in your opinion about size. Thanks again.
@YeahBuddy
@YeahBuddy 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and your question. On the size question, usually I wear 11 in boots. This was pretty standard in my 8 years in the Army. So I was surprised when a 12 fit in the Iron Rangers. I purchased mine at the Red Wing factory in Red Wing, MN. The clerk indicated that the Iron Rangers fit closer to what you’d size in a tennis shoe - which for me is a 12. Admittedly, I should be using a toothbrush to work the oil into the welt. I believe the color is Amber Harness - but as you mentioned, the Red Wing Mink oil darkens them a little.

@@PFM666187 what type of leather - full grain, Roughout, calfskin, etc? My first instinct is to let them fully absorb the conditioner. Which, Saphir’s conditioner contains Mink Fish Sea Oil. Second instinct would be to try either a gentle clean (which may not work) or using the recommended boot balm/polish - if applicable. Also, were the boots new or were they well worn and perhaps in need of a deep clean first? If the later, the oil may have absorbed dirt, polish, wax, or other debris. I’m not as familiar with Saphir but looks like their products require multiple steps and purchases: “Then, as you would normally, apply a coat of Saphir Renovateur, followed by two coats of Saphir Medaille d'Or Pommadier Cream Polish to re-saturate the finish, followed by two coats of Saphir Medaille d'Or Pate de Lux Wax Polish (with an extra coat on the toe box to bring up a high-gloss shine).
