No one on RU-vid can show a good job on black plastics that’s the hardest color to restore due to seeing every imperfection and scratches

Ryan H, I accidentally said Number A, Number B instead of saying letter A or letter B because the updated product by 3M changed the new labels. Now they are using 1,2,3 and they are purple in color. Plus the fact that English is not my native language got me confused :) Thank you for clarifying it :)

I would do step 3 with a green or blue foam pad and polish with buffer. Do it by hand after to make sure it’s even in hard to get areas.

I've done this before several times before. I'll let you in on a little secret. It works much better and the shine is permanent when you use NO compound at all. Use a wool pad, set on high RPM, move quickly so you don't burn the plastic, use VERY little pressure. Just quickly whip the polisher back and forth. When I used 3M compound and/or polish, I had to set the speed much slower and constantly keep the pad wet otherwise, the compound & polish would gunk up and stick to the plastic. Also, the problem with polish is it does a good job filling in and hiding swirl marks. Once you wash the ATV, the surface will look hazy from the swirl marks as the polish is washed away. These methods only work if your plastic isn't seriously faded. If it's faded, you'll need to wave a propane / MAP gas torch over the faded areas until the color comes back. The torch will also bring back some shine, but the sheen will be uneven. So, after torching, take the polisher to it to bring it to an even sheen.

Moo Cow Thank you for sharing it. I have another atv that I am working on. I will try in a few weeks and will let you know how it works. Thanks again!

Thank you for replying. I tried using the compound straight off the bat and it kept melting to the plastic and couldn't figure out what was going on. After using the compound I was too afraid to use just the plain wool pad. I will try a brand new pad with no compound next and see if it works better. I know if you have any deep scratches at all, like you said, the compound really sucks to use. You have to sand all of the scratches out first.

do you use water with the wool pad or just dry? then apply wax after to finish the job?
@YouTubeSupportTeams
@YouTubeSupportTeams 8 лет назад
this does not work. 2000 grade wet and dried the panel, then wool pad rotary polished on various speeds and it did nothing to bring back the mirror shine the rest of the plastics have. so will try a foam pad with polish and see what happens

Though I’ve only refinished maybe a few hundred plastic fuel tanks , I’ve found the heat etc to be all bunk . I also learned to use various compounds to not only save time but to get a better finish . As far as it filling swirls , yes you much remove the residue . Also , it’s helpful to use a loose cotton wheel at times , also different finish grits depending upon the plastic compound ( not all cycle polyethylene compounds are the same ) . I appreciate the above video for dispelling the bunk and myths about heat guns , linseed oil , headlight resto kits and other hogwash .

How deep are the scraches
@WorldMechanics
@WorldMechanics 9 лет назад
Luis Fernandez usually if the scratches are not deep at all you could just use the polishing compound. If the scratches are too deep you need to send them until they get smooth. But always try to use 800+ sandpaper. Otherwise you might make more scratches and always finish with 1500 and 2000 this way it will buff out really easy.
