@Yvonne Williams, This is SOOO useful! Especially the part of how you put the back on. And the Mica powder add-in! I'm one of those crazy ADHD crafters, but I really do love making jewelry.... wire wrapping, clay... you name it! I've been making Dragon Eyes and more with polymer clay for years now, thanks to some of your older tutorials. (How could I RESIST dragon eyes?!?! I LOVE dragons!!!) Most recently, I've FINALLY started presenting my company (Titled "Coffee With Dragons"... See? Told you I love them!) at craft fairs! I had my first one last Sunday and my second one is a week from now. I'm so excited! I wasn't able to bring my Dragon eyes last Sunday because I had recently gotten married and then moved, and I'd still had them boxed up... Well they are not boxed up anymore and they will be going to the craft fair next week! Here's the issue... I made these dragon eye pendants a little over a year ago. I used beige Super Sculpey to make them, and then painted them over with nail polish. (To those who are going to call me on using nail polish with Polymer Clay, I have been doing so with Super Sculpey for over 5 years and have had no averse affects so far... I still have most of the pieces I've done this with, even ones from about 5 years ago, and they are still fine today.) However, I'm guessing that Super Sculpey and any other version of Sculpey probably have slightly differing chemical mixes... That, and hand painting EVERY SINGLE DRAGON EYE and making it look nice with all the detailing... and THEN the dry time for the polish too... TAKES FOREVER. You can't just leave Plain Beige dragon eyes that same color... It absolutely doesn't work! On top of that, in order to make beige sculptures interesting, you really do have to paint them... I've tried using acrylics, but I don't like the way it looks afteward, and also acrylic paint tend to flake if not sealed properly... Making these dragon eyes the way I have been and then trying to sell them for a reasonable price is definitely not efficient. Over the last week, I've just started playing with the idea of making the dragon eyes all one color and using mica powder to pull out details... and then I saw this video and it makes me happy, because it just confirms what I was already planning to do! As for why I'm happy about the way you did the back, I've been struggling with armature backing for a little while now on my clay pieces. My currently made dragon eyes, as well as other pendants and earrings I've done, I've used JB minute weld resin to attach the pieces... but my husband really doesn't like the chemical smell of that adhesive, and I don't like the sort of "glopped on" look afterward. I've tried attaching the pieces with minute weld, and then using UV resin to cover up the glopped on work... this method DOES work, but I personally feels like it takes FOREVER to finish it properly so that the resin isn't tacky and looks nice in the end, plus UV resin is a bit expensive and I would prefer not to use it for something that isn't really going to be seen... especially if I have to go through all that extra work to make it work properly in the first place. Your method is PERFECT. It is literally the solution to all of the problems I've had with this in the past! Even better, It will look like it was purposely part of the piece when I'm done! Also, tip for finishing up the surface of a piece with UV resin... Most UV resin once cured tends to still be just a bit tacky... to fix this, I've discovered that putting on a thin layer of clear nail polish top coat will end the tackiness and bring the resin to a glossy shine. To avoid the nail polish yellowing over the years, I personally suggest using the Sally Hansen's Insta-Dry brand (not the Sally Hansen's dries instantly brand... yes, there's a difference...), or the simple Wet N' Wild clear top coat. I've been messing with nail polish for a bit over 5 years now and I have a big bag full of clear polish; of all of my polishes, those two brands have not yellowed at all over the years I've had them. I prefer using Insta-dry as, like its name says, it dries up VERY quickly... the down side is you will almost never be able to use ALL of your polish because it will thicken over the time it takes to use it and become very sluggish and hard to apply cleanly. On the other hand, the Wet N' Wild brand leave a gorgeous glossy coat, but takes at least 20 min. to dry a relatively proper amount for handling. You pick your poison, I guess! ^_^

I'm just getting into jewelry making and would love to make a necklace! Could you make small enough ones for earrings? You have an AMAZING talent!!! (Have you ever read the "Dragonriders of Pern" series by Anne McCaffrey?) You might be able to find it at the library, but since it was published in the 1980's, I'm pretty sure they are out of print. If you like dragons, you would love them!!!

Hi Yvonne, I love this gorgeous project (but then I'm a huge fan of everything you make) . I've got a block of the Premo Sculpey Accents polymer clay in: Graphite Pearl, some mica powders and 5 tigers eyes, so I'm going to have a go at this project today. When you said that you "don't like to leave your dragon eye cabochons for too long on the unbaked clay, because the nail polish reacts with the clay," I was wondering if. I should seal the backs of the dragon eyes with a glaze/sealant like mod podge or judikins diamond glaze. I'm probably being WAY over careful, but last week I managed to ruin nearly 40 glass cabochons for the very same reason - I didn't seal them. What do you think? Love from Amanda in Australia. P. S.
