A little advice for your viewers on changing the port widths. Make sure the cutouts in the sides of the piston, if it has any, will not allow the air fuel charge out of the port at any time. The easiest way to do this is with the cylinder still on the engine. Put a pencil point on the side of the port, and rotate the crank a few times all the way around so the piston rubs on the pencil as it goes past. Do this to both sides of all the ports you intend to modify. Remove the cylinder and see where your pencil marks are on the piston. You can widen the port so the lines are at least 2mm from the cutouts. Also, increasing the port timings by 1mm or so could make your engine have little to no bottom end acceleration. These mods could still have adverse effects on your engine's performance, so tread with caution. If you cannot afford to junk your engine, don't touch the widths or timings. Stick with cleaning up the trash! You will be surprised at the improvements that alone will make! Remember, air is like a fluid...easier in, easier out. You may also have to richen your jetting. Research reading spark plugs and piston wash. When in doubt, add more fuel. Start rich and go from there. I like your Happy Time Harry, Meatwad, and Mighty Mouse tattoos! Probably not too many people even know who they are or where they're from though... :(

@@HughesMotorized you got any advice on vacuum leak where the carb bolts on the intake? I can't tighten it anymore and it's definitely leaking cause of the high idle and if I spray carburetor cleaner there it brings the idle right down. I've seen videos of people putting a bead of silicone around it or wrapping a piece of an inner tube around it and using a hose clamp to tighten it. All kinds of shit

Hi Eugene, my 80cc kit Just arrived and I’m wondering. I’m going to take the head off because I have a CNC racing head and I’m also going to take the barrel off to have a look at the intake holes. I will use a Dremel and then what grade sandpaper wet and dry do you recommend to finish the barrel with please? Then I see you finally finish with a supermarket green scour pad. Mainly wondering what grade sandpaper to use after the Dremel before the scourer please. Thank you mate. You really have great no-nonsense videos.👍👍👍

@HughesMotorized
@HughesMotorized 4 года назад
Yes I can. There are videos on it. You put a fresh sprk plug in and warm engine up. Run 30 seconds at full throttle. Kill it instantly, pull plug and see color. That will tell you how your jetting is for full throttle (main jet). THEN you put a fresh plug in, warm it up and run 30 seconds 1/2 throttle, kill it and look at plug. That will tell you how mid-range is working. Stock NT carb, slide needle regulates richness for midrange. Black pug = too rich. Whte deposit on plug = too lean. Coco brown color = just right

Hi Eugene. I am cleaning out the rubbish in the intakes and lowering the intake and raising the exhaust by 1 mm. So when you say you can leave the carburettor intake slightly rough, how rough do you mean. Do I still need to sand down the carbie intake or can I leave the little grooves from the Dremel in it? And just sand the exhaust intake smooth. Or do you recommend sanding both intakes? Thank you so much for all your help!👍👌
@HughesMotorized

You want to sand both intake and exhaust where they go into cylinder so a ring wont snag on a burr, polish up exhaust and scuff up inside of intake.

I used it on a zzr600 notorbike head for racing in what is called ''clubmans'' in the u.k . one of the important things ios matching the openings so the hole in the exhaust port of the head matches the exhaust pipe , same on the intake side. On the motors I build for myself, I always clean up the ports and match the intake, transfers, and exhaust ports before running the motor. After break-in, I decide if the cleaned-up motor is delivering what I want. Then I will modify the port timing and spend time opening up the exhaust as much as possible. What this video says is fantastic advice for just "winging it" without doing any port timing calculations.

I hand sanded some of the cylinder because my dremel slided when I was porting and caused some small scratches / pits in the cylinder. Some are saying that the interior of the cylinder has a special coating and that sanding the cylinder would ruin it. I used 150 and 300 grit sand paper. Do you think its ruined? edit: looks like the cylinder is 100% iron so theres no coating and therefore no damage via sanding, however I still got some small pits / scratches from my dremel sliding off and hitting the cylinder wall. Think it will cause any issues?

It seems to me that it would be better to use the little abrasive wheel it would be safer to take away the burrs then you can go ahead and polish your all your ports. IT WOULD BE MUCH SAFER

Yup the intake an exaust ports definitely are not nice an smooth like a factory engine Honda Yamaha an such lol I'm on my second build the first one was a learning curve cause can fix dirt bike an sleds no problem however these motors have many little- flaws with lol great for kids to learn about engines though an tinker with second motor I bought I just bought the engine with no hardware its all cheap junk lol I'm gonna order the drive chain an stuff from the place i order dirt bike parts that's what I ended doing with my first engine build the parts are much more durable especially the drive chain I can break the chain with pliers that come with these kits lol can't do that with a real dirt bike chain though I paid more the chain and parts but least they last alot longer they can keep their cheap hardware lol choke socks too vibrates down a chokes the engine I put a carb with a pull out choke my buddy races after we ported his srx 700 snowmobile he took a center punch an put a bunch of punch marks on the intake side for fuel dispersion we shaved the head also I wonder if there's any room to shave the head on these down a thousand of an in h

Good info although somewhat mislabeled. Porting mostly refers to widening and/or raising the ports right at the cylinder surface, not cleaning out casting irregularities.

@@HughesMotorized I´m sorry I didnt watch more than the beginning where you said it was basic porting and then described it as cleaning up the passageways.
@MichaelForrestChnl
@MichaelForrestChnl Год назад
@@HughesMotorized also I would never give any generalized porting advice except for one type of cylinder after I have measured the durations and ran them along with port widths thru a porting calculator. If you say "always lower intake" and someone has a cylinder that already has the correct intake duration then you´ll cause him to mess it up and then he´ll have an engine harder to start.

You make everything bigger, but it doesn't make the engine better. It is important to improve the accuracy and direction of ports in this work. It is necessary to vortex the cylinder.

Yes where they stick past the ports. Depending on the particular type of gasket, you can use an exacto knife, or use the Dremel with a carbide bit if it's metal. I like to cut them in place to get them exact.

I actually had a conversation with custom motorcycle builder today. I was going to ask him about porting and polishing my motor. Long story short, he said that at the most I should just buff the ports. But as far as going overboard there's really no need to. He said the only thing I should really worry about is the muffler and the carborator..... He had to have been telling me the truth cuz he didn't even want to do it for me. He said he hadn't even heard of anybody doing it for over 30 years ago....
@HughesMotorized
@HughesMotorized 3 года назад
He sure has a point with most motorcycles today. 2 stroke motorcycles haven't been marketed in large numbers since forever so I doubt he's working with them. Cleaning up and opening up intake and exhaust ports certainly do help. A dealer tech wouldn't do that as it is not factory suggested and maxing out power will certainly lead to problems I'd offer. These cheap 2 strokes can handle more only up to a point. My rat bike which is running the cylinder I mildly ported in this video runs so much better and I highly suggest doing it to all 66cc 2 strokes

BASIC porting is that plus opening up the ports to allow more flow. You raise the exhaust 1mm and lower the intake 1mm. Widen both 2mm. More technical is to set specific port timing and duration
