Congratulations on bringing a new puppy home!
[ STEP ONE - Before Bringing The Puppy Home ]
Choose an area in your house that is spacious enough to place the exercise pen, this is where the puppy will learn to potty train when you first bring the puppy home. Place enough pee pads to cover the entire area where the exercise pen will be located.
Make sure to overlap the pee pads so that there are no gaps. Place the exercise pen on top of the pee pads. Find a spot for the dog bed and water tray. Set this up before bringing the puppy home.
[ STEP TWO - Bringing The Puppy Home ]
Once you arrived home with a new puppy, bring the puppy to the exercise pen area and do not let it wander around the house until the puppy has peed.
Now you can bring the puppy out and play with it. Make sure you do not leave the puppy unattended especially on any high surfaces where the puppy could jump or fall. An injury from any height could be very serious and it will cause a lifetime of trauma to the puppy.
[ STEP THREE - Pee Pad Training ]
Keep the puppy inside the exercise pen, only when the puppy has peed you can bring the puppy out to play or explore the house for approximately half an hour each time.
Taking the puppy out of the exercise pen before they peed may lead to future washroom accidents outside of the designated area where you want them to pee.
Having a schedule for your puppy will help them adapt to your new home. Keep a consistent feeding schedule and remove the food bowl after half an hour even if the food is not completely finished. It is not a good idea to leave the food out for the puppy throughout the day. Wait until the puppy has gone to the washroom before bringing them out from the exercise pen.
[ STEP FOUR - Gradually Removing Pee Pads ]
Once the puppy has adapted to the fixed schedule, you can remove one pee pad from the exercise pen. Continue removing one pee pad at a time repeating the same steps until there are no more than two pee pads left. This may take up to one month to train. During this time you will have to start from the beginning and repeat these steps over and over as the puppy learns to potty train.
[ STEP FIVE - Freeing Puppy From The Exercise Pen ]
If the puppy continues to pee on the correct location on the pee pad then you can remove the exercise pen completely.
