How To Potty Train Your Puppy Using The Bell System | Quick & Easy Potty Training 

I have a husky, she’s only about a month old and has only been staying with us for 3 days. And she already tells us when she needs to go (which is such a blessing)

I love that there is a video on this. I wanted to do something like this for my future pup.

FYI: bell 🛎 training worked for my puppy 🐶👍🏽

This is the way I recently potty trained my Chihuahua. I litter trained it, as opposed to letting it go outside, and it was by far the easiest and the best method I have ever used. So what I did was purchase a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and put a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it. At the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides that I customized into my new doggy litter box by using a hack saw to cut out an opening on one side of the container large enough so a Chihuahua can enter and exit it easily. Then I added an inch layer of pine pellets to the floor as the litter material. Next, with the Chihuahua puppy inside the doggy crate I butted the doggy crate opening to the doggy litter box opening. As the idea was that the Chihuahua puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate but when it needed to eliminate, it would eliminate in the doggy litter box. Guess what, it worked like a charm. So for the first three weeks, I kept this up only letting the Chihuahua puppy out to bond and play after I saw that it had very recently eliminated. Then after three weeks, I slid the doggy litter box out about a foot and a half away from the doggy crate. Then I monitored my new puppy closely throughout the day to see if she was using the doggy litter box like she was supposed to, and she did flawlessly. Then subsequently, I slid the doggy litter box on each successive day a little closer and closer to the final designated location for the doggy litter box I had previously picked out. When the litter box was in its final designated location, I then considered my new puppy fully potty trained. In any event, this was not only by far the easiest time I ever had potty training a Chihuahua puppy, but it was the first time I ever trained a Chihuahua puppy without having any puppy mistakes. Moreover, a litter box, as far as I'm concerned, is not only the easiest way to train your pet because your pet essentially trains itself, but overall it's the best solution as well. As I don't have to worry about maintaining a set schedule to let my puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining outside or if it is freezing or too hot. I also don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for an extended time period. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or my dog getting a disease another dog left behind. I also don't have to worry about other dogs attacking tiny Chihuahua since she always remains inside the home. As far as the litter material goes, I highly recommend pine pellets because it virtually eliminates all odors and it is quite easy to work with. It's also far cheaper than other kinds of litter materials and does a far better job at eliminating odors. As you can buy a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 plus tax and you will use only about two to maybe three bags a year. Meanwhile, when a dog or cat urinates on the pellets, the pellets disintegrate into odorless saw dust. To make cleaning my doggy litter box easy, I purchased a sifting cat litter box as a cleaning aid only. So what I do to clean the litter box since I always flush down the toilet any solids as soon as I see them, is empty the doggy litter box in the sifter of the cat litter box. Then I sift the sawdust in the sifter into the cat litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter is pine pellets, I then empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and then add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of pine pellets to make up for what was used. Then I empty the sawdust in the cat litter box from below the sifter into the trash since it is odorless. Lastly, I wipe everything down and put everything up until the next time. As I clean my doggy litter box out about once a week.

How do you get them to understand that bell=potty & not just going outside to play?

Tysm I got a mini dachshund and im trying to potty train but I will definally try this method!

I have a puppy that keeps going out and then poops inside. We will take her out frequently from 10-40 mins. I know she has to poop but she holds it until we go in. However at night she is perfectly potty trained! I hope the bell works we been working on this for a while and did all the text book rules with positive, treats, etc.

We have been working with our 13 week old standard poodle. He does great with the bells! The only problem we are having is that he rings them when he walks by them to the water bowl. Not every time but a lot like he’s just playing with them. We always make him go out anyway but usually he wants right back in. So do you think he will eventually quit that or am I destined to let him out 100 times a day 😜

I have a 17 week old Golden Retriever and we have had the worst luck potty training!! Can not wait to use this bell technique

Thank you for your video. I will be getting our Cavapoo in 3weeks at which she will be 8 weeks. And I will be trying this. Will it work for a cavalier that is 9 years old or will she follow what the little does?either way, I will be taking them both out at the same time.

We haven’t had a puppy in such a long time. Should we have a bell for all the doors we take him out or will that be to confusing? Also , do we need a metal crate or can we use plastic crates? What else can you recommend we get before the baby arrives , clickers, teething chews, antlers? Thank you for your help

Idk why I’m watching this video we do this with are lab and she caught on so quick her teacher recommended it for us all we had to do was shake the bell when we wanted her to come outside and potty and then she started ringing it herself

Hey Abby, loved the video! Are you crating Alfred since he's a puppy? Or is he left out at night, too? At what age did you stop using the crate for Archie? Bailey, my cavapoo, is doing really good with potty training. I am doing the crate training method and I just want to know a good age to stop crating him at night. Obviously, him and Archie are completely different pups and he may need more or less time, but I just want to know how long you crated Archie. Does the bell have to be hung on the door that leads outside? We have a spare bedroom/hallway baby-gated for our goldendoodle puppy so he can't get to the main door leading outside without us removing the gate.....could I hand close to the gate?

girl I wish 5:12 would work for me mine just gets scared if I interrupted her especially when she does her lil wee she would ran away from me, than get tummy hurty . And won‘t be able to walk and when I go outside she gets distracted soo so fast . that she just lies down . now when I say let‘s go outside she would get so excited but she does not fully understand what she is supposed to do outside . Some days it really works she just dont focus on anything sometimes it is sooo hard . now that comman outside associates to playtime sniffytime and potty time but I think I trained her that word wrong . she learned „outside“ faster than let‘s go potty

We're getting a puppy soon and unfortunately a polar vortex decided to sweep in that we weren't expecting. Its going to be in the single digits at some points throughout the week. It will be way too cold to bring a puppy out, do you have any tips to do a transition/combination puppy pad and outside training as ill have to make a decision each time on whether its too cold for the pup to be outside for bathroom break at that particular moment, even with a jacket on.

Do you bring the bell to other houses when you go?

I've been using the training bells with my 19 week old corgi puppy every since he was 14 weeks old and he still doesn't understand 😞 He knows ringing the bells gets him a treat and I do it every time I take him outside. I also say excitedly "Let's go potty!" My only guess is that he hasn't connected the dots because we live on the 2nd floor apartment so he doesn't get outside immediately after ringing the bells. Any advice?

My dog ( or any dig) does not go "potty", she does go outside to tend to business. We call it a business trip.

My puppys paw got stuck in this bell and it really scared her now I‘m scared to use that .😭😭

Our 2 yr old lab goes to the door and whines always so it was easy. Our 4 month old lab doesn't andngives little warning she has to go at all so a lot of wasted trips outside. However, dogs absolutely understand negative reaction. They even knew it was sad when they did it. BUT....its a controlled reaction...not screaming bloody murder because they had an accidemt.

At what age we can start this Bell training?

Puppies who are small breeds need to go out more often than every hour try every 1/2 hr, also make sure they go more than once because they always don't empty their bladder in 1 squat.

I'm no expert, but if you think your dog understands your praise, then it also understands when your scolding. You said not to scold a puppy because he won't understand. If that's true, then the dog doesn't understand my "positive reinforcement" either.

It should not take 20 min to explain this. Hang a bell rope on the exit from your home, if you can get one bell and keep it with your poo bags (not required) when you open the door to go out for toilet breaks ring the bells when they go toilet outside say your command words or ring the bell if you took it. My pup rings the bell all the time even when she’s just come back in. Carrot and stick, if you see them going toilet in the home tell them no of you catch them in the act. It took me a week to house break my pup. She was 5 weeks when I got her and with in 1 week she was no longer owing or pooping in the house, she’s had accidents at the front door and in the elevator but the larger she has gotten the less accidents there have been.
