How to Power Carve with a Dremel - Power Carving Basics. I have had a lot of folks reach out and ask about how to get into power carving or using their Dremel to carve wood. In this video, I'll go over the basics of wood carving.
We talk about the parts of the Dremel and different bits and burrs. I walk you through the very basics. If you're new to DIY or new to wood carving this is the perfect video to get you started.
Cheers!

I had to stop this video right at the beginning and thank you. Most dremel videos just assume that everyone knows all the basics. I live all alone and really don’t know anyone so when I started working with my dremel I was absolutely clueless to very basic things. Thank you for explaining things so well. 🙂

Wow, so much to learn. I am just starting out and need to learn everything. I have my dremel 3000. I have some burrs and I bought 24 6x6 pieces of wood to practice on. Now I need to learn, learn learn. I need to find better burrs, a vice to hold my wood. I used to have a small one that was perfect. But that was 30 years ago. I love carving on wood. But I haven't done it for a long long time. I'm 70 now and I want to get back into it. Thankyou for being my teacher!

I bought a dremel in 2018... used it a couple times then put it away... never thought about using it to carve wood ...until I got a random suggestion by youtube after watching some other woodworking videos... I guess my dremel is now a woodworking tool; maybe I will make some custom trinket for the house.

Looking forward to the next segment with the router base. I have the router base and used it with my Dremel to make an "International Harvester Scout" sign for my Dad for Father's Day. I used one of Dremel's small V-groove Router Bits, it worked, but had some burning. The carved in detail got painted in this case, so it didn't matter as much, but wondering if a Burr bit (flame one?) would have worked better. Interested in hearing what you think and for the next video. Thanks!
@BuildDadBuild
@BuildDadBuild 3 года назад
Hey Ted! The bit I have found most useful with the router base is a fluted upcut bit like this one: amzn.to/31e3Yft Also, sometimes you'll get burning if you are moving too aggressively or are taking too large a bite with the bit. Cheers

#1 bro, you crack me up. Primarily because if you were fat, bald, thick ass glasses and in Florida there would be an awesome chance that you are me. #2 as a guy named Eric, myself, I love the shout out to Eric Weiss, which was also Harry Houdini's name also. So, somewhere i got this grand idea to buy a dremel and step into the world of carving. Right now, I am taping pictures of cars, planes, trains, and Deaths Deathstars to wood, carving out the lines with my dremel burrs, using a wood burner(also known as a soldering tool) to darken the lines, and then adding acrylic paint with the ultimate goal of placing them on a huge wall as a mural/ tiled family tree of my family and in-laws all represented by a vehicle. Honestly, the picture in my head is far better than anything I can actually accomplish since I have little to no artistic ability(my mother swears it is because she did not let me play with scissors when I was a kid, personally I call that good parenting since if there is a way to bleed, I will find it.) Dremel began my trek into the power tool world. I know that was alot to read, but there is a question. I have bought many of those multi bit packs from Lowes and Home Depot, and now, thanks to you I will be going to the website you mention for those bits you told me about in this video. How often do you have to replace your bits? And do the bits you mention really reduce the need for the sanding barrels? Also, one of the non dremel multi packs i bought has a flat rubber disk bit, the same rubber that the sanding barrels go over, but I don't have a clue what I am supposed to use on it, cuz it doesn't have a 0lace for a screw to hold a sanding disc on it. Without a picture of it, could you gander a guess on what it is for? One last side note, I am that guy who is a member of the grammar and usage police. I do not see anything wrong with your usage or pronunciation. If something was wrong, it tells you how good this video is because I didn't care enough to take notice. Thank you for this video, as it is the first I have watched and am now going to check more. I will not have comments this long on any of those. Happy 4th, bro!

@@BuildDadBuild I'll try it again, a little shorter #1 love the video it is the most entertaining while informative that I have seen and the primary question was a 2 parter, the the burr bits you use, how often do you have to replace them, & do they reduce the need for the sanding barrels? The lines i saw you make were pretty smooth, but I am so doing very fine lines. I'm carving pictures of cars, and trying to be as detailed as possible. I have 100 questions, but as I am sure you are busy, I'll try to hold back. I'm just new to all of this.

Today I came across your video. So May I ask an experience user of Dremel is there one bit that would really carve into pine wood. What I’m trying to determine if this tool could be used to cope moldings. Furthermore would a buy create aerated sawdust or just miniature wood chips? Coping with coping saw hand coping saw and hard to do and some have used a spinning sanding disc to do this type of work.

Just got a knock off rotary tool. Thing is pretty great but it didn’t take long for me to realize that all the “carving” bits that come with it are for sure way too fine coursed. I also melted through the hose it came with 😅 first carving ever is for one of my buddies who is leaving the unit as a going away gift. Looks pretty killer for my first one.

I got to wondering if the bits that came with my (offbrand) rotary tool were just too cheap. On pine I didn't feel like they were doing much more than the dent I could do with a little more pressure. So my first kutzall pick to see how they do was the extreme course narrow/long cylinder. It seems limited for relief carving except maybe and some texture (scrapes could make hair or flowing water), but where it shines is at shaping a block in your hand. It feels like the power tool form of whittling.

Hey brother! I have gotten this request multiple times. The only issue I have with it is YT doesn't like the Pew Pews all that much. But...since I got the Grill Blazers, I was thinking of doing a concealed cabinet for my torches. I'm still working out the details, but I should be making one in the future. Cheers

Build Dad Build totally awesome man, I always look forward to your new content. I have used several techniques and ideas from your channel to build on some ideas.Need to build one to the dimensions to conceal pew pews but demonstrate it to hide your whiskey from the ole lady.

@@BuildDadBuild I am using the brushes that come with the unit. They do not last long and with shipping rats they are expensive.
