Dont forget to be realistic - you will need to do some work whichever system you decide on for learning sax I have spent months researching into how to play sax and discovered a fantastic resource at Takiras music method (check it out on google)

Oh ya, this is great stuff. This is all the stuff that my teachers have shown me when I was at a conservatory. I'm always looking for inspiration & a different perspective for my own daily practice. It doesn't matter what instrument you play, this is how everyone should be practicing. Of course, playing like this guy is a little more advanced, but this is what everyone who really wants to play with freedom needs to be aiming for in their daily shed routine.

@@carlosmoncada432 You might want to check out Dann Zinn's method. He's a master teacher--Dayna Stephens and Ambrose Akinmusire both studied with him. I got to study with him in a few classes in school. He has a book called Zinn and the Art of Saxophone. Also look up Dann Zinn Practice Regimen PDF by Eric Danewitz. It's intense. Highly recommended.

Practice makes perfect, or so they say. I'm still making LOTS of mistakes, but at 48 (obviously very late to the party), I'm still in beginner mode, and need more practice (too much is still never enough). I'm trying to learn arpeggios, but that's a bit of a challenge.

I am all mixed up about finding the proper scales, arpeggios, etc. for improvisation over chords and have spent hours trying to find it without any good result. Even though I will consider myself always as a piano/guitar beginner I want to improve my performance over jazz standards/ bossa n. songs. If you can, please, I am needing just a simple tool/guide to sart with, or at least your best advice. I am 63 and not lazy at all. Thanks so much for your kind attention and patience.

Hi Walter. I too play a new wonder Chu Berry Conn. Mine is a 1928 model. I use a metal Otto Link 9 star mouthpiece. I love your sound and wonder what mouthpiece you are using. I've been thinking about moving away from metal mouthpieces for a while now. I think the Lincoln Centre videos are very instructive. Best wishes, Ricky

Once I know all of the major scales what other scales should I learn, and how do I figure out what other scales that I need to know, and how should I be practicing them?
@RonnyDoplo
@RonnyDoplo 7 лет назад
Look up natural minor, jazz melodic minor, and harmonic minor. Then look up bebop scales. Also important modes(which are usually based off major scales). Start with the dorian. It's easy to think of it as just a major scale starting on the 2nd degree of the major scale, so D dorian is the C major scale starting on D. This is a good way to figure out what notes are in the scale, but listen to how it sounds. It's a minor scale because of the flat 3rd (F natural if we're talking D dorian) with an interesting color because the natural 6th degree and the minor 7th. Use that as a jumping off point for the other modes. Other common ones: Mixolydian which is based off the 5th scale degree, lydian on the 4th, Phrygian on the 3rd. Hope that helps a little.

Thanks. I want to know with or without tongue? Meanwhile, how can i have core and hard saxophone sound like yours? I wanna achieve this sound mainly
@akmar1984
@akmar1984 5 лет назад
Do it with different types of tounging like: all tongued, every other, 1st and 3rd from a four group, then 1st and 2nd and finally 3rd and 4th. For sound I would recommend 20 minutes of lomg tones with dynamics, 10 m of overtones in different variations and classical etudes :)

Joef Clarin if you're new this concept is too advanced for you. Look up circle of fifths and learn that a consistent tempo also there are a few books that are by Larry Teal which are phenomenal for building your understanding of scales and their variations, really builds your chops!

You say learn in all twelve keys but is that really practical for a beginner (3 months in)? I only know 4 keys (so C, G, D, Amaj ; and their relative minors A,E,B,F# min) and I don't see myself learning the other 8 for a long time, months I would say. Is this the wrong approach? Should I practice 4 heavily for a few months and then move on or really try learning all 12 as quick as I can and just incorporate it into my weekly routine (2 a day maybe)?

+Parsa Mizaagha It's a Conn New Wonder II (Chu Berry) which makes it around 90 years old. Some vintage horns were never originally lacquered but this one has probably had the lacquer removed chemically. Relacquered horns aren't as desireable in the marketplace as some metal is said to be lost in the preparation process.
