In this episode of Trumpet with Bob, @bobbyspellman discusses different ways to practice when you're on vacation, you get your wisdom teeth removed, or your horn is trampled by wildebeest and you don't have access to a trumpet.

I've used my mouthpiece on a spare lead pipe to warm up. For me, it is especially effective to play notes between the fundamental and first partial on the pipe. I used to have a "Buzzarella," purported to be made by Vincent Penzarella; it was similar to a BERP, but made of brass. One part was meant to be inserted in the horn like a mouthpiece, and the other held the mouthpiece for buzzing. I never used it, and sold it years ago. Several top drum corps use the BERP FWIW. Cheers!

I use my left hand like a trumpet for scales sometimes. The knuckle of index finger is the valve 1, knuckle of middle finger is valve 2 and the knuckle of ring finger is valve 3. My left hand is always at hand :D This exercise is excellent for scale practice. I recommend two applications for ear training (Toned Ear) and for rhythm (Complete Rhythm Trainer). Both are very useful! Thanks Bob!

I (a comeback player) have been very good about eating my vegetables, trumpet-wise, for the past several months, and have seen real improvements. Soon I'll be moving and will have to take a week or more away from the horn. So thanks for this video! However, I will *not* be free buzzing. That has always seemed to tighten me up and develop bad habits. To each their own! I know it's helpful for many.

Lately I've been finding free buzzing to work as a great emergency warm up, but don't do it if it doesn't work for you!

Another thing to do is to away from the horn is articulation. I sometimes try to improve my single tonguing speed by tonguing 16th notes in time to my steps while walking. You can also sing melodies while working on different tongue/slur patterns etc. (like groups of two and three 8th notes).

Hi Bob, graeat video! I'm a teacher and I want to share my opinions about these points: -Totally agree with you about listening-singing! -The pencil exercise is great and I recomend it to all of my students. I tried PETE (by warburton) but I didn't like it so much, anyway I know lot of players like this tool. If pencil is to light I recommend using a coffe spoon instead of pencil. -Breathing tool? throw them away! They are good for "pumping" your breathing and for a "placebo effect". They don't help players in finding a good, natural and efficient breathing. If you use them too much you go in the "overblowing world" (I did it when I was a student...). -I'm not a fan of mouthpiece buzzing alone. I recommend using the BERP (plastic version) or a buzzing tool beacuse they give you a backpressure that is almost the same of the trumpet. This two tools improved my playing (and it's the same for my students)

Thanks for the input! A coffee spoon is a good idea to up the challenge of the pencil exercise! I've never tried the PETE myself, but I know some people like it. I did use a breath builder about two decades ago, but I can't say whether it really did a lot to help. At the time I felt like it was helping to improve my lung capacity and consistency of exhalation, but I can't honestly say whether it really helped much. You're probably right about that if you've been looking into it. I agree about mouthpiece buzzing, and the berp is a pretty good way to replicate the back pressure. That said, it's another one I used briefly before abandoning it. Thanks again, and keep up the good work spreading the musical knowledge!

The Burp and the PETE work well for me when I cannot practice. If you get that metal PETE that weighs quite a bit more and builds strength somewhat more.

Ah yes, I've heard of both of them. I had a burp for a minute but rarely used it. The PETE seems like the pencil exercise on steroids. Glad they're working for you! Thanks for the input!

Thanks for the kind words, and for the suggestion! On several occasions I've had to memorize hours of music at a time before a tour, and I have a method that works very well for me. I'll try to make a video on it soon!

Hello !! New trumpet player here 🤚your videos helped me a lot for beginning my journey. I just have one question, it's been 3 days since I got my trumpet and I can play my first five notes (c-d-e-f-g) but after these notes my throat feels like closing and there is a tension between my collarbones. I actually can see the area expanding. What am I doing wrong ? I can play currently play my first octave, but in the last 3 notes (a-e-c) I'm having a hard time and the sound is not coming out properly. Thank you !!

Hard to say without seeing you play, but it may help to visualize yourself blowing all the way through the trumpet rather than at the mouthpiece. Try not to close up as you play higher, and use your abdominal muscles to push the air through your head while you keep your throat relaxed. Shoot us an email if you want some one on one help!

Off the top of my head, I would try to get a good warm up in before you play, and try to rest frequently between shorter but more frequent practice sessions. Good luck!

Seems like the Pampet training device and the Sandovalves would work similarly to help maintain good finger technique.
