It was very helpful. Just wanted to know if we need to keep the lid of the kiln open throughout the preheating time? And the preheating temperature is 200 degrees right?

Preheating is usually to make sure all the moisture is out of your clay. I usually do leave the lid cracked to allow for that moisture to escape. If things are already bone dry i dont usually preheat but that isnt' often. be careful about putting things that are too wet - closer to greenware than bone dry - into your kiln becasue it can be taxing on your elements. That being said, i do it sometimes when i'm in a hurry. I hope that helps! Have fun. -mj

If I have bone dry pieces going in, is a preheat necessary? If so, it looks like the shortest amount of time you stated as 30 minutes and the longest was 3 hours (if it was damp/wet). There isn’t much out there for preheating bone dry! I’m surprised

no need to preheat if you're already bone dry. i think you can set to less time period than 30 minutes but i've never preheated for less than 30 minutes. 45 is the least amount i have done. -mj
