How to prepare a collage background in a concertina sketchbook

Have you wondered how you can produce looser, more expressive work in sketchbooks? I have a lot of techniques that I follow to help with this. In this video I share now I create a collage background in a concertina sketchbook as a start point for subsequent working over with other mixed media.
My subject for this is the ramshackle buildings that are the focus of a new body of work for me. Keep following my channel to learn more.

Love it! Always wanted to do a concertina book but have never known how to start! Thank you! Thank you! For putting on u Tube. Every time I've approached doing an online workshop the costs have been prohibitive and out of my reach. Really happy that this Is something accessible to those on a tight budget, especially with the current high cost of living.😊

I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yes the cost of living is a challenge for many of us. There are lots of different approaches to using a concertina. This is just one of the approaches I use. The collage background startpoint inspires a looser and less representational image.

You are welcome Karen. I treat it pretty much as a background so when I work over it could change dramatically. I’ve just created another one using a pocket concertina ( will show the process on a reel/short) so now I have 2 to work over. Hopefully I will sell at least one of them!

I started a concertina that I made myself. Starting with ink and water. The next layer wil be collaging. I never do that, but seeing your randomly sticking on I will give it a try.Thank you for this video.

Im glad you enjoyed the video. I have posted a variety of videos about the ramshackles series but it is not close to completion yet. beautiful video. I am just getting into collaging and this is a great video. thank you for sharing. I do have a question about the white gesso you are using. It seems like it is not straight white gesso, did you tint it with a little bit of yellow paint? Thanks for any other info.

Hi thanks for your comments. I am so glad that the video was useful. No the gesso is just white gesso, no yellow paint. Its use here is first to simplify a little because it’s quite busy. It also means that the inks interact with the gesso surface to add interest. I hope that helps.

Thanks! You only put matte medium on the back and not on the front to seal it? Is that to help you still add more on top, like pen or markmaking?

Was this concertina made from one large piece of watercolour paper? It looks bigger? So far the collage was very interesting to follow.

Hi Caryl thanks for commenting; no it is an A5 SeaWhite of Brighton concertina sketchbook. They are very good value and are cartridge paper but doubled up.
