Tip #6: listen to other DJ sets -AND- DECONSTRUCT THEM. How did that DJ just do that sweet thing that made you go “whoa!”? Figure it out... Alternatively, you can find tons of videos where a DJ does a routine or mix and breaks it down. Go get the same pieces of music and work at learning how s/he did it. Then apply the new skills to your own favorite music. BTW - nice video Jamie! And thanks for the free training bits on the web!

Dennis Parrott I completely agree! Things like Laidback Luke‘s In my mind are Great as well, but have you listened to a Live Mix of Tujamo? You can learn a lot from him

Dennis Parrott Things that make me go woah usually end up being edits or mashups 🤦🏽‍♂️

BSantos too true my friend, too true. Actively listening to stuff is grist for the creative mill though... you here something and think “whoa” or “I can top that!” or (best) “hmmm... what if I did X or Y?” You gotta be listening though cuz TV will rot your brain!!

Excellent video. I’ve been thinking about how to celebrate Black History Month here in the states and the idea is during the struggle for civil rights activists woke up everyday with unexpected challenges and yet through resilience and creativity they were able to achieve massive gains. For the entire month of February I wake up, I head to my Denon Prime 4+ and I pick 7-10 tracks from Beatport to mix regardless of genre and I try to find creative ways to make something work. It’s been a transformative experience especially to find that there are often beats and sub beats and rhythms that work within rhythms and there are times when I have to speed tracks up and slow others down. Sometimes I have to use FXs and even some back spins. In the end I know it’s making me a stronger and more confident DJ. And I felt that.

I would like to add this point if you're preparing for a club/party set. Search for music using your favourite platform. Once you find a track you like, take out your phone and find the stopwatch application. Press start on the first beat of the bar and then press stop just before the next bar begins. Divide 60 by this number and then times that by 4, the result is the track's BPM. This mean's that when you create a playlist of tracks you may want to play, you can order the tracks by tempo. I then find that you can listen to this playlist a few times before you begin mixing and get a good idea of how the tracks and set can naturally flow.

1) listen a lot of music to see which ones could be set together 2) stay aware of the eq of the music : if one has a good bass line and another goof vocals (or other high sounds) maybe you can mix them together 3) check the key of each song (the dj software can show you this), it will tell you where to go next in your set as a starting point 4) try to take one particular performance feature of the controler (the slicer, then the sampler, etc), and train, experiment only on this one until you use it to its full potential 5) cross different styles (hip hop to house, etc) ; train to transition between two styles ; use different remixes of one song to do transition 6) just mix ! Spend hours and hours mixing, enjoying what you do. It's the best way to get inspired

Tip #4 is good if you are an open form DJ. If you are not, you can still use the same concept he is talking about. I am a House DJ. My genre has different subgenres so I can go build a set with soulful house, deep house, disco house, afro house, and Latin house. I have done it on my radio shows and it works. As long as you keep that flow and love your choices.

back in the days I just picked one new track from all of my favourite producers. It was easy when the sound was exactly what I liked and the songs were fitting. Nowadays they release a different kind of stuff and some have quit so it has become a bit more random.
@Tesnopesno
@Tesnopesno Год назад
If you don't mix songs too much together, the songs don't have to fit that well together. if you put vocals and melodies on top of each other, you need to be much more careful. key and changing the key makes the mix evolve. staying in one key makes it boring although songs are good. I think mixes often need more air although when you play music, you feel you wanna push song in instantly after singing/main melody stops. If track is well made, it can play with only the beat and still be mighty good.
@Tesnopesno
@Tesnopesno Год назад
you can kinda figure out perfect setlist beforehands for some gigs, but if you go with a list, you often lose some energy in the mix. it's almost impossible to play an hour of music exactly as you plan and you may do it too carefully.
