How to prepare and paint radiator

Do you have a yellow, cracked radiator at home? You can give it a new life within a few hours - painting a radiator is an easy and quick job. Depending on your preferences, you can choose the colour which makes it nicely blend in with the background or becomes a standing feature of the room. So if you are one these people who still aren’t sure if it’s possible paint a radiator at all or worry about the final effect, don't. The result will be fantastic as long as you stick to a few basic rules:
· Turn off the radiator and open the window. It sound like a common sense but if the radiator is warm, the paint will start dripping. Don’t turn it on till the coat is completely dry or it will be sticky for a long time - I would suggest not to put the heating back on for 24 hours. Make sure the ventilation in the room is good, not only will the paint dry faster, but more importantly you won’t be breathing in the fumes while working.
· Protect the floor and possibly the wall. Even if you are extremely careful, it’s very likely the paint will drip. You might also accidentally touch the wall with a brush, the stains will be hard or impossible to remove.
· Sand the radiator to roughen the surface slightly so the paint will stay in place easier. You also have to get rid of all the rusty patches, uneven spots and lumps. Use coarse or medium grade sand paper and a spatula if the layer of paint you need to remove is thick. Make sure the surface is very smooth before you start painting, otherwise it will always look rough.
· Clean the radiator well, you can use a vacuum cleaner first and a damp cloth later to remove any fine bits of dust and dirt.
· Surprisingly, spraying is more difficult than painting. If you don’t have much experience but want a nice, even coat always choose a brush or a roller over a spraying can. Never use ordinary paints, they aren't heat resistant so check a DIY shop for specially designed products which won't be affected by high temperatures. Shake the tin vigorously before you open it and then use a stick to give it a good stir; stirring ensures that the colour and the consistency of the finish will look great. I used Dulux Once for wood and metal (bought in UK).

Sandpaper Roll 60 - 115mm x 5m: amzn.to/3JxOlE5
Sandpaper Roll 60 - 115mm x 10m: amzn.to/3Q7V89R
· Apply the paint to the surface of the radiator, be careful not to overload the brush. If you prefer you can use a small roller instead. Paint in the same direction as the groove for a neat finish. Usually one coat is enough.
· Leave the paint to dry, preferably for 24 hours. Make sure the radiator stays cold, otherwise you hard work might be ruined. If you need to apply the second layer, the surface must be completely dry.
Good luck

Really like it, thanks for the advice! How long roughly are the stages? Eg sanding, painting, drying? Complete newbie (with a wife nagging for it to be done lol). Also what type of work gloves are those?

Hi thanks a lot, it's great the film was useful It took me about 20 minutes to prepare and 15 to paint but it the radiator is very small and it was rusty only at the bottom. Check my other film where the radiator is very rusty and much bigger, it was about and hour to prepare it, here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bg2oq8-_PWM.html Check the paint how long it dries but I wouldn't put the heating on or place anything on the radiator for at least 24 hours even if the paint is not sticky. You don't have to use the gloves, I usually do even for not particularly dirty jobs, just the habit from work. The gloves are from a DIY shop, nothing fancy. I don'r know the brand but it's the cheap stuff. Good luck with your work

Using the wrong paint - heatproof paint needed. Dulux Once should only be used prior to chucking the radiator out! The paint would wrinkle and fail even if it did stick.

I did not do it right. There was a flaking portion on the upper side of my rad and I did sand it down but did not sand it throughout the whole section. I painted with Wickes quick dry white gloss for metal and appliances. The shadow/traces of the flaked area still appears albeit in full white. Would another attempt to sand down the whole portion to bare metal of that particular side of the rad and then using Dulux once for wood and metal Gloss make the traces disappear? Furthermore, I touched my bathroom rad and there were bubbles of paint which burst to the touch. I am assuming those areas need to be competelty stripped off? How far do I go for the stripping/sanding off the area? What number sandpaper to use for these types of jobs please? You make it look so easy and the end-result so smooth :) Thank you for your advice.
@k-nemo
@k-nemo 4 года назад
I'm afraid the radiator must be really smooth before you start painting. Doesn't matter how many layers you'll do, the rough areas will still show. You have to sand the areas with bubbles as well. See my other film how to do the prep ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bg2oq8-_PWM.html, maybe it will help a bit.

Hi again, have not heard good ratings on the Dulux one coat for wood and metal on Amazon. It is very thin and runny, and many were complaining of endless dripping not to mention the unbearable odour. What is your say on this, please? The insructions on the box say "may need two coats" for a paint which is claimed to be One-coat? Thank you.
@k-nemo
@k-nemo 4 года назад
Hi, it's up to you of course what you want to buy, there are different brands to choose from. I am personally pleased with the effect, I've painted a few radiators (one was very bad, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bg2oq8-_PWM.html), one coat only and they are still ok, not yellow or cracked at all. I don't think the paint is runny, just ordinary, just don't put a lot on the paintbrush and you'll be OK. I'm afraid I can't recommend anything as it's the only one I use, there is still a bit left in the tin.

The radiator is usually not flat and the sanding machine will be of little use. Try not to grind too intensively. The radiator is often made of a thin sheet of metal :). You don't have to remove paint from the entire radiator, either. Just remove it from the places where it doesn't stick firmly. The remaining areas can be sanded lightly with the sandpaper to make the new coating stick better. You can see how I sanded the radiator with thick but badly crack paint. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bg2oq8-_PWM.html
