Preparing your comb honey supers for the honey flow-- “Success always comes when preparation meets opportunity”
With comb honey everything is more time sensitive than when you're dealing with extracting supers. So, preparation is the key to success.
Are you playing chess or checkers with your beekeeping?
Check out the pictures at the end of the video to see what can go wrong with foundationless.

Gus, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences in comb honey. I really appreciate the extra time it takes to video all the steps. There was more to know than I imagined. I'm sure this series will greatly shorten my learning curve. Thank you so much!

Gus thank you for some great ideas. Terrific video!! I use a turkey baster from the $ tree for welding the wax. Keep the wax hot. Will last for my 10 frames. Then I dispose.

For pouring beeswax: look up Richard Noel's videos "The right equipment is essential. Get organised!!" at the 16:15 mark. He shows a small device called a burette (a double walled container that uses warm water to heat the wax). Looks a lot simpler to use and less prone to being clogged (saw other videos where he uses one: "Cold and sunny : making eeks in the workshop." at the 3:22 mark).

You are not the only guy with an s on boxes. I usually don't run full supers of comb honey. I just put a couple of frames per super on my strongest hives. My market for comb honey a little weak. I started producing it for my personal use. I ended up with a lot of shallow supers with drawn comb. There a lot easier for older beekeepers.

You did a great presentation on preparing your frames for comb production. I just subscribed hoping to see if you have a presentation on how to set up your hive for comb honey production. When I'm done with the video I'll search your library for the set up procedure. I haven't done comb honey for a couple of years. I've used the Juniper Hill Split to prep my hives for production. Where I live splitting hives and rebuilding to the flows won't work. I'm in the north and it just won't work for me, so I do the Juniper Hill Split.

Wow this is odd that this video came back up today . I have all my comb supers ready for the bee season BUT I am going to add more supers. I have had a question I was going to ask you so now is the best time. When you put your comb supers on do you run more than one in each hive and do you install them on top of your brood box or on top of your honey supers or on the very top of all your honey supers?? . Was also going to say I run full thin sheets of foundation an my bottom bar is the open slot so the foundation can just hang lose at the bottom. Thank you very much for all your time an video’s you do . THANKS
@gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529
1.-no 2.-over 1 super they’ve filled 3.-yes it should hang freely through the slot. If you’re at hive life this year holler at me, thanks for watching!

Hey Gus! Great video and info! I wonder if I can just make some thin wax starter strips from my own wax for the comb honey frames. Do you think the bees will work them ok or make a mess without embossing them? Any suggestions for a good embosser roller set? Thanks! -Serge
@gusmitchellcranesnesthoney6529
I would think they need embossing for the bees to work them in a way you would be satisfied with.
@brhyne68
@brhyne68 4 месяца назад
Why do you not just use narrow starter strips rather than the deeper surplus foundation? I know it takes longer and is more work for the bees but it seems the quality of the final product would be much better.

Kenneth Taylor DeSoto Illinois, I use a 25 gal metal Barrel cut end put on concrete blocks add 2/3 water and boil my frames clean gets the grooves clean. Use rubber gloves maybe to swash the frames around

Good tricks. How many comb supers do you put on a hive at a time? Under super? Top super?

1 at a time till they get going then I may have more. Under super if the last one is close to ready.

the strip left over from the mediums frames you call waste .. do you mean you throw it out . or do you still harvest the honey and wax from it ?
