Painted in 1889, Sunflowers is one of Van Gogh’s most famous works. What happened to the painting after it left Van Gogh’s studio and are the colours still the same as 130 years ago? Extensive research has been conducted on Sunflowers in recent years. We now know more about the fascinating genesis and condition of the work. The exhibition Van Gogh and the Sunflowers allows visitors to discover how important the sunflower was to Van Gogh and learn the answers to pressing questions such as how we can best preserve this painting so that it can be enjoyed by generations to come.
Van Gogh and the Sunflowers is on view from 21 June until 1 September 2019

Paintings are not restored very often, so an opportunity to restore such a famous work of art only comes around perhaps once or twice in a lifetime. These people are very lucky indeed.

I can imagine lifting a Van Gogh painting without my hands shaking violently. Sitting here even my hands felt the panic when they lifted the painting hshshs.

It must be so moving, and feel like such a privilege, to work on a painting like this. I've only seen one of Van Gogh's Sunflower paintings briefly at the National Gallery in Canberra, Australia and the painting really surprised me with how much light seemed to come from within the background. Like the painting was literally backlit! But I can never imagine what it must feel like to work on such a painting. Withdrawal symptoms is probably a bit of an understatement.

Kijk er nu nog meer naar uit dan ik voorheen al deed. Prachtig te zien hoe jullie bezig zijn met het onderzoeken en vooral het bewaren van deze grootse kunstwerken.

And here we have some idiots throwing soup at the paintings of an artist who had nothing to do with their bullshit, who by the way, had sufferred his whole life, had nothing but his paintings. Crazy times indeed

I reckon you just sling some tomato soup over it. That'll give it a nice gloss or perhaps some mulligatawny soup?
