I’m so happy I found your channel. I was asked why I watch canning and cooking channels since I’ve been canning for over 50 years (my grandma taught me when I first got married), I liken it to a NASCAR driver. Even though you’ve been driving for decades, you still watch the races with other drivers. Learning never stops, and I love canning.
EXACTLY! I also always learn something, or get reminded of something I already learned way back but have forgotten about. Same with the gardening, sewing, woodworking and crafting videos. Sometimes I get some seed of inspiration too. Those times are the BEST!
I am addicted to your videos. I just love your personality and wish I lived near you so I could earn from your knowledge. I have learned more from you than I have learned in my 64 years of life. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING.
You are so knowledgeable about this canning and pickling. I'm 73 years old and I'm learning so much from you. Please don't stop keep it coming. Thank You and Blessings
I tried every trick people told me to get our fresh eggs to peel. Salt, vinegar, baking soda, unicorn dust, nothing worked. They still looked like Edward Scissorhands peeled them. Husband got me an Instantpot and now I do them all in it. Perfect peel every time.
After I boil my eggs run them under warm almost hot water as your hands can tolerate..one by one crack and peel under running water....so easy and perfect everytime
If you have a instapot put your eggs set your eggs out for 15 to 30 mins to warm up put them on the rack that came with your pot. put 1 1/2 cups of water in put the lid on, set the pressure on high for 5 mins. When done wait 5 mins then release the value. open up and put in cold/ice water for 5 mins. then peel. So nice.
You are so precious! I use an Instant Pot for boiled eggs. 1 cup of water in the pot, 5 minutes under pressure, 5 minutes natural release and 5 minutes in ice water. The peels come off very easily!
I have spent 2 days watching dozens of pickled egg videos and this is by far the best!! Thank you for explaining that the perfect eggs are shelf stable but rough outer eggs can still be used but stored in the fridge! Nobody else mentioned that difference. I have subscribed!
I FIND MYSELF NOT BEING ABLE TO CONTAIN MY SMILE WATCHING YOU DO WHAT YOU DO.. YOU MAKE IT LOOK SO SIMPLE, WITH TRUE FACTS THAT WE ALL HAVE GONE THROUGH SUCH AS STUBBORN EGGS THAT WON'T PEEL RIGHT.. THANX AGAIN..
When I put hot items in jars that I am going to store in frig my grandma taught me to after filling jar,put lids on &THEN turn jar upside down on counter & leave about 15mins..when you turn it back over the lid seals that way your item will last longer..I do it for my greens
Lol, your face when you added the pepper flakes was hilarious! Never pickeled eggs before. Im going try this. UPDATE I made 3 dozen. 10 % busted but I steamed them instead of boiling them but I did shell them and placed them in the fridge. The rest were perfect without a flaw. Yes take her warning to put it in the back of the fridge bc you can't stop eating them! Fixing 3 more dozen today but boiling instead.
Pickled eggs are amazing to have on hand because you can quickly throw together potato salad, egg salad, etc or put in your salads. You don’t always have to eat pickled eggs. There are lots of options to use them for.
Thank you so much for your information. You are a real homesteader that is so enjoyable to watch.. It feels like you are passing generations of knowledge. Thank you so much. God bless you and your family.
Hello HOMESTEAD HEART, My wife steams her eggs for 15 minutes, then turns off the heat, then moves the eggs to cold water till eggs were cold, Then she peeled egg shells off with great ease. My wife Bev, said; the eggs peel so much better steamed, than boiled. Maybe someone else on here does the same? .......................Bev & I enjoy your videos, thank you for sharing them and your knowledge.
Thank you for making this video. It's always great watching you have fun doing whatever you do! At age 70, I've boiled quite a few eggs, quite a few different ways. The best way of ensuring your eggs peel easily, especially if they are FRESH eggs, is to get your water boiling first and THEN place them in the boiling water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove them from the water and place them in cold or iced water for 5 or so minutes then crack them and peel them. The shell peel off so smoothly and the eggs look great! This is the best method I've found so far! Give it a try!
These look really good! I grew up with my Mom making red pickled eggs using beets. She made that vinegar brine, then added mustard powder, beet juice, and horse radish, salt and sugar.
Just THANK YOU.... Because of YOU I know have 2 canners. Great running 2 at a time. I've canned chili Bean n ham soup chicken breast legs hamburger taco seasoned hamburger Planted a garden and grew tons of tomatoes!...Onions were great. Shared alot with friends n family. Bought widemouth Mason jars...have alot of them. Am blessed to be able to buy all my supplies and 2 canners. I also planted 6 triple crown BlackBerry plants under an arched cow fencing for them to grow over. You are a great motivator. I enjoy watching YOU the most. My friends n family are very impressed by my ability to preserve food n have a garden. Going to put up a chicken hut and get a few chickens to have fresh eggs. I now live on the Tennessee Geogia border. Alot of people here have huge gardens. I would love to repay you somehow for sharing all you knowledge. Prayers to you Mr. H and your whole family for good health and continuous success in all you do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. And grow on......
That look when you put in that last spoonful of pepper flakes!! 🤗 I was still giggling minutes later. 🤣😂🤣 Thank you for all the effort you put in your awesome videos for us! 💕
I'm going to have to give your method a try. I like spicy also, not quite as spicy as Mr. HH (Seriously, pepper flakes, Louisiana AND fresh jalapenos?) I think I'll ease into it with just some pepper flakes and Louisiana and work up to it. LOL I have been pickling eggs my whole adult life. I learned as a very young boy from my Grandma who taught me to make Red Beet Pickled Eggs. In the spirit of "each one, teach one" I'd like to share. Grandma's Red Beet Eggs. 1 gallon glass jar with lid, 1 - 2 dozen hard boiled eggs. 1 gallon white vinegar 1/4 cup salt 1 can pickling spice a few bay leaves 1 large can of sliced red beets OR 2 fresh medium beets, sliced and boiled until tender, save your beet liquor. 1-2 medium/large yellow onions sliced, not diced. In a 2 qt. or larger sauce pan add 1 qt. of vinegar, your salt, pickling spice and bay leaves. Bring to rolling boil, turn off heat and set aside to cool. Once cool add this mix to your 1 gallon glass jar, then layer in some beets slices and liquor, onion slices then some of your eggs. You want to layer them in to be sure it is well blended throughout the jar. Keep layering until all your ingredients adding the remaining vinegar to cover each layer as you go until the jar is full and ingredients are used up. If your liquid isn't evenly colored with beet juice put on the lid and gently invert it a couple three times to mix. Same rules for storage apply, into the fridge minimum 2 weeks. These are great on their own, make the most awesome egg salad or added to your favorite potato salad. I've haven't considered as Mrs. HH suggested of varying my ingredients. I don't see why this recipe couldn't be modified to suit your tastes with herbs, spices etc. Once your first batch of eggs are all gone, you can add a second batch to the same pickle and give them an additional week (3 total) before eating. Thanks again for all you do at Homestead Heart, you two are a joy and a blessing.
The best tip I have for fellow chicken keepers: Peeling FRESH eggs is easiest for me if I put them is a big plastic bowl of ice cubes and a little water, seal the lid on tight and shake pretty hard for a bit. This helps force the water under the membrane and they peel easier. Great videos!
You are such a blessing! I'm doing the eggs tonight!. I started water bathing my spaghetti sauce and also peaches years ago but didn't know how to do anything else! I did up 10 lbs of ground beef in the pressure canner last week. Thank you and God bless!
I am very Blessed for finding you.. I am from Louisiana and live in Arizona. I go by Picklin Cajun and trying to get back to the wonders of my childhood.. I am canning figs today. 10 years ago I planted 2 two foot tall figs trees. I will not go through all the contortions I go through but today I am on my fourth canning and you can relate to this "I am over figs for this year".... I have a harvest Right freeze dryer that preserves food for 25 years. I ran out of space for storage.. I do some picklin but I am about to start all over again. You are my inspiration. When you get a chance can I get with you to learn more on the eggs. Thanks so much ..By the way, I have stored over 50 quarts of eggs and about 20 half gallons. My chickens are on break right now because of the heat. Yesterday was 114 F. I have 12 chickens. Not nearly as much as you. LOL....Geri
I love watching your videos. I grew up helping my mom canning and all the farming stuff. She had 7 children so to survive thats what we had to do but we loved it. The best food is what you grow and raise on your own.
My husband and I just found your channel today... WE LOVE YOU!! You are so helpful and a great teacher! You’re also hilarious! Please keep the videos coming!, but I get to watching all the ones you’ve already posted... and I do mean ALL of the videos LoL
I LOVE your channel! You are so knowledgeable and explain things so easily. Im not a homesteader, but I grew up in the country. My grandma and my mother used to can and preserve anything and everything. Grandma rarely bought groceries because they grew all of their veggies, fruits, and meat (ok, grandpa caught a lot of fish too). I'm 57 years old, empty nester. Im really enjoying your videis, and am learning so much from you. Thank you and Mr Heart. Blessings❤
Thank you for talking about how to store the less than perfect eggs in the refrigerator and not keep them on the shelf. I did a terrible job of peeling my eggs and was going to make a ton of egg salad but now I know I can pickle them and keep them in the refrigerator. Thank you I have learned so much from you and your channel.
Love your videos! I've loved pickled eggs all my life! I found a recipe from a 1940's recipe book when I was young and haven't looked back. It called for dry mustard and whole cloves. Those two things are always in the jar, but I've added all kinds of things over the years. You're right! You can do whatever spices/herbs you like.
Mr and Mrs Heart, I just have to say you give me such joy watching your videos. It's obvious you're a loving, and happy, knowledgeable couple. With things like they are today it's just a pleasure to watch you do life! God Bless!
You're a wonderful teacher! My mom used to add vinegar and salt to the pot of eggs while boiling, but I found that the vinegar stains aluminum pots during this process so I just deal with peeling the eggs the same way you do them. Keep up the great work -- you're a wealth of information!
This really works well... now I use my instant pot but before I got it I was doing the added salt method. If I was doing a lot of eggs, 1 dozen or more, I add 2 -3 tbsp of cheap dollar store iodized table salt. The shells come off really easy after the ice water bath.
My daddy taught me this too and I've always done it and my Kids and Husband do it now cause I taught them u can also Use Baking Soda it works Great buy I like the salt though
Great video. My family loves pickled eggs so I was going to make some for gift giving. I ran across a tip that works beautifully to peel hard boiled fresh eggs. Take a heavier teaspoon and give the big end of the egg (then end with the air pocket) a quick firm (but not hard) snap with the spoon causing an indentation crack of the shell. A life saver! The shells slipped off so easily. I was absolutely amazed. Thanks for sharing your recipe and tips!
Me either! Doing my eggs TAday! 10lbs of butter. Check! And that pineapple jelly....that baby is Goodt!!! NEVER woulda thought...! This ladygirl keeps me up late. Often! 😬😁
I'm sitting here at 4 AM watching your video, and started laughing like crazy at your adding pepper flakes!!! My dogs all looked at me like I'd lost my mind, but the look on your face was priceless! I just found your page, and I promise you, I'll be back.
I have a tip for peeling fresh eggs - fresh eggs peel better if you boil the water before putting the eggs in the water, then cook for 12 mins and they will peel so much easier. I love yor channel and learn so much from you! You are such a sweetheart!
You tickle me, your personality is golden. I just received my caning set and I'm ready to start doing something I've always hated "cooking". Glad I have you to watch and learn from
I think l'll make the hot ones for my grandson, but will have to keep them for 2 weeks! ALSO: Wouldn't they make great gifts at Christmas for some of the special men in your life? It would be so pretty with a pretty homemade label, ribbons, and a bow!!! ❤🎄❤
I love canning and have been for over 40+ yrs. I want to thank you for these videos. I have learned so many tips from you enough that I’ve changed the way I do some of my canning!! Thanks again sweet lady!!💕
Thank you for being on youtube. I learned how to preserve foods from watching videos: dehydration, water bath canning, pressure canning, etc. I am glad to see my own peeps doing her thang! God bless you. I have subscribed and will go back and watch some of your other videos.
After you crack the egg all the way around. Try rolling the egg in the palms of your hands together lightly. Palm up, other hand palm down, put egg in between and roll gently. My Mama taught me this will help make the shell come off? Try it Mrs. Homestead, I hope it helps you. Usually works on the cooled eggs in ice water like you do. I absolutely love you and your videos! I have learned so much from you! I wish I could find a homestead her in North Central Florida. I am a widow and live on property that is not agricultural! 👎🏼 Growing up as teenagers we lived on a farm! Keep on teaching us, you are a blessing in my life! 💖
Our pickled eggs are picked with pickling spice and beets with the beet juice instead of water. They turn a reddish color. We pickle them close to Easter. Oh and we don't refrigerate them just set them on the counter for a couple weeks until the eggs get colored
I am pickling us with mustard seed, celery seed, pickling salt, parsley, turmeric, garlic powder, onion powder, whole black pepper seeds. I pray the last a while, but don't think so, because I like pickle foods!! Will keep you updated. Have you pickled cauliflower?
Um um your making me hungry! I just got 10 baby chicks along with 4 hens and I was just thinking that I’m about to get bombarded with a whole bunch of eggs! First thing that came to mind was pickelin them. low and behold ,there you were!! Your recipes look awesome .Thanks and God bless y’all!
Hi from Baltimore, Md. Started canning with you last summer watched Ledfarmer 64 b/c of u. Got trees in containers, food in my cellar, Soo thankful to God for you guys.
I'm so excited to see this video!! I have just three chickens but sometimes I get so many eggs and it's important to know how to preserve our bounty! you're wonderful thank you thank you thank you some of this I kind of know but I'm sure I can learn something new from everything I see that you've provided so far any to your videos!!
I don't own any pickling jars but now I have a reason to get some. Thank you for being you. I enjoyed the video and learned a thing or three in between warmhearted smiles.
Sure like your ideas that seems like what I grew upon, this reminds me of the good times & I appreciate the instructions you give that's simple, easy to follow I'm sure anyone can take for a successful canning with your helping video's ! THANKS ❤
I've never had pickled eggs but when I have to peel a lot of eggs I crack them all around and THEN let them sit in water for a while. Peels come right off. Works with fresh and store bought.
Thanks for the video. If you use a ratio of 3/4 vinegar 1/4 water you don’t have to water bath for 15 minutes and you can store them outside of the refrigerator for up to three years. You just never want to poke an egg with a toothpick before putting in jars. That recipe is and lots of colonial cookbooks way before refrigeration. Hope that helps. Also if you just use a simple Brine of 3/4 vinegar 1/4 water to your eggs it really makes for wonderful egg salad and side dishes on a green salad.
Love watching you homestead, bring back memories. Here's an idea to peel boiled eggs, "use a clean jar with a lid, put an egg in the jar close the lid and give it a few shakes." "Voila" Peeled Eggs!!!
I'm glad to hear the note about boiling your older rings in vinagar to "revive" them when they have begun to show signs of a little blemish of rust, etc. I've noticed mine doing that and have decided I had no choice but to discard them.
