Here in Kyrgyzstan my in-laws have a summer cabin that is just filled with apples every year. We hardly know what to do with them all. After seeing this I plan on putting together some kind of cider press and get us some cider for the winter! Thanks for another great video!

Another really good video. Thanks for all the effort you put into showing us things we will likely never be able to do ourselves.

Sound cuts out at 11:44. Very nice job on the press, We had an apple tree at my Dad's place when I was a kid. Made for some great snacking. Thanks for sharing.

this video lost sound somewhere, probably something you're already aware of, but, is there a way to transcribe what you were saying and add it to the description, or CC? sound disappears at 11:44

I liked the vid as it brought back so many memories. We would go to a local orchard & buy several gallons of this wonderful drink. We would even freeze some to have it later on in the winter. My father really enjoyed it. He's long since passed on. The orchard is now a shopping plaza. Seems you're having some difficulties with your sounds on the last part of the vid. Thanks

Wake up call to me thanks to you Cody... I used to eat organic apples from my grandparent's apple tree ALL the time when I was a kid. But these days, you're right I wouldn't even give an apple like that a 2nd look. Time to go back to the way I used to be. Thanks!

Having been literally raised in an apple orchard about two hundred miles east of your location, the process of making cider, hard cider, apple cider vinegar, canning, and even pickling them into 'spiced apples' as well as eating the dozens of different varieties brings back a flood of memories. When certain aspects of farm life are an everyday occurrence they are often taken for granted, but for me, apple time was always very special. If you want to grab onto and own some of that specialness and then amplify it, you might enjoy reading Wild Apples by Henry David Thoreau. It and 49,000 other classic books are available for free at the Gutenberg Project ( gutenberg.org) . Another excellent read is , There's Pippins and Cheese to come, by Charles S. Brooks. I hope you take the first book to heart and play Johnny Appleseed with 'wild' apples in the far corners of your place. Generations of humans and wildlife to come will thank you for it. Some especially tasty cultivated varieties for eating, cooking and cider we had in a similar environment to yours were, Blue Pearmain, Gravenstein, Jonathan, Jonagold, Northern Spy, and of course one must not omit the "summer" apples that come on in late August. IE King, Summer Transparents, and Snow (AKA Fameuse). I can't urge you strongly enough to invest a few bucks for at least some grafts of these (and as many others as you can lay hands on. You'll never be sorry you did. Oh, and it is my experience that the more fruit trees you have, and the greater the variety, include pears, plums, peaches and especially pie cherries, the birds prefer them and will let your other cherries alone. We seldom ever got more than a few quarts of pie cherries because the Magpies just adored them. Oh, and you may like to plant a lilac and/or a honeysuckle bush near the beehives, it adds a wonderful floral scent to the honey and gives them lots of food. I know, too much but use what you can. BTW pigs just love the spent apple 'cakes'. Super episode.

Jan & I went to a Fall Festival and saw a press similar to yours, but theirs didn't have the flywheel and I could tell the mechanical operation was jerky at best. That flywheel is the key. Also, they did have the mesh bags, which I see can make the cleanup a bit faster. Thanks, I really enjoyed watching this series.

Great video! When I was growing up I was lucky enough to live next to an old homestead that had an orchard full of apple trees that today would be called "heirloom" apples. The Arkansas Blacks were always my favorite, crisp and sweet! ~ Coca -Cola..... Ironic indeed!

Yumm! Nothing like fresh cider! And hot cider with a cinnamin stick on those cold nights in front of the fire can't be beat. You mentioned worms. There's only one thing worst than finding a worm in your apple and that's finding half of one LOL! Great video!

to keep our apples organic, on warm days we put up small buckets(1/4 gallon) hanging on the branch. The worms and bugs are either flocking to and into the bucket or fleeing. helps keep the "Beauty" of apples whole as my girlfriend said.

Great stuff. Cody is spot on about the apples. I grew up in Texas and had the same experience. Mealy, nasty Red Delicious--an apple bred for its color, not flavor. I moved to the PNW 23 years ago and at the age of 33 had my first real apple. I've never looked back and I always have 'em cool and crisp in the fridge. PS: a lot of store-bought apple juice actually comes from CHINA and god knows what they put in it.

why don't you take the leftover mash(post-squeeze) and throw it into a stockpot with a little water and some sugar and simmer it down into jam? i think it would be worth the effort of finding out! i turn a lot of my garden scraps into braises and jams and it always ends up rather lovely!

Hold on minute, Cody. My old Pee Chee says a bushel of potatoes weighs 60 pounds. You'd think apples would be the same! (;>) It also says 2 pints = 1 quart, 8 quarts = 1 peck, 4 pecks = a bushel. We used to put our apple juice in gallon plastic milk jugs and freeze them. We could then have apple juice all winter. At 5:35 did you see that worm go through the grinder?.................................Just foolin' I didn't either!(;>)

someone told me that the seeds of apples contain arsenic and that is the reason they should be taken out. Are you familiar with this? Is it ok to grind the whole apple? We typically core the apples beforehand.

I would be willing to pay whatever you're asking to have some of that shipped to us in AZ. I'm sure it tastes 10x better than anything we can buy at the store. Mrs. Cajun would love some of that. Kudos on a job well done. Love the new holster by the way. What brand is it?

Brother we had one just like this on the farm growing up. we would use the left overs to feed the pigs. One note that may help you press more out. Use a stack at the top of the press. That is why there are tall legs sticking out. God Bless Brother.

Hi, A few things... I wish you showed all of the restoration... I just like that kind of thing, or did you and just include it in other videos that I did not watch? What did you end up finishing the wood with? Thinking cutting boards - I think they use a combination of bees wax and oil I admire your christian morals and struggle with how you justify 1) stealing the Coka Cola pallet (It is stealing) 1) stealing the US Post Office bin (It is stealing also) Sometimes we don't think clearly and just do things that are wrong. Please mend your ways and return both of them. Don't just tell them to come get them... You used them so make the effort to return them yourself. I never found a video of yours that I did not enjoy although I wish some would be more thorough, like the apple press series. Keep up the good work and God Bless you and Your Family Alll the best, Anon

What is the gun for? Are they "bad apples"? I'm glad that I live in a country where I don't need a handgun to walk around my garage. I know this is an old question, but it deserves an answer anyway. He lives in the country and coyotes, bears and cougars live in his immediate area. He has dogs and a child to protect. It's nice that you live in such a safe area, too bad we don't all have that same luxury.

Sure. We just send our old ladies out with a compound bow. If you own a gun here you are a criminal.
@samswihart878
@samswihart878 8 лет назад
+max webster Well, we arm ourselves with whatever we have, I suppose. Gun ownership here in the US isn't a crime, it's an enumerated constitutional right. I don't question Cody's decision to be armed on his land, mainly because it's his right and choice to do so. I also understand that he wants every possible advantage if/when he is faced with an immediate threat to his family's safety. A handgun gives him just that.
