Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.

It was impossible to find anything similar to what Donny uses for the pressure test. What I did was take a large bottle cork (from hardware store) so it fit snug in the bellow with approximately 1/2" of the cork exposed . I then drilled a hole in the cork after the fit check and placed a piece of fuel line through the cork leaving enough exposed to allow for the vacuum pump to be attached. I also covered the top and area around the fuel line with black permatex RTV for a good seal. The bottom was also done in the same fashion. I then used a small hose clamp to keep it secure when installed into the bellow. Not too fancy, but if you can't find the adapter Donny uses, I think this should work.

Man I am glad I read this comment! I hadnt thought of doing that to test for leaks but I will now. I actually have an 038 Mag II that wont idle after a port, polish, and refresh. I suspect the cylinder to crankcase seal is the issue but that will be a great way to confirm.

it is sad that we live in such a disposable world where 100 an hour labor from a shop, high dollar parts from sthil push it quickly to the need to trash it which makes this information that much more valuable.forced to by import parts, bought a saw ran ok but is basically junk after seeing the scored piston , but I'm really enjoying going through these videos just realized the seals were bad ,lots of oil in the clutch was just going to do the piston now I know the cause thanks great channel

It must be tough to make a good living as a small engine mechanic. I say that because the amount of labor required to repair many small engines must be half or more of the value of the engine if repaired. I own a car garage. If one of my techs did this job (looking for air/vacuum leaks) in a car engine the car might be worth $12000 so a $300 repair would be well worthwhile. You use the same knowledge and tools and take the same amount of time and if you tell the owner the bill will be $300 he will tell you to junk the saw. You have great skills donyboy but I think you don't get the money you deserve.
@vistadrummer09
@vistadrummer09 7 лет назад
Probably where the money is at is for the Professionals. I know a lot that will buy several of the same model saw, trimmer, etc to have backups. However they usually buy the higher end models that are most repairable to get the most out of their investment. Those are the guys that will probably pay as you said. The homeowners etc are the ones they will just replace the saw. This kind of situation is where I'm always at being an IT contractor. I never deal with residential stuff only business and enterprise accounts.
@wade727nelson
@wade727nelson 6 лет назад
I was a small engine tech. We were SO GOOD at repairing this stuff common repairs took under 30 minutes, clock time. I could diagnose a 4-stroke no-start in under 3 minutes, do a full tune up, blade sharpen, oil change, deck clean...under an hour. Doing 8 of those in a day at $100 per made money. I used every speed-up known to man. Oil suction pump so I didn't have to pull the drain plug. Three electric screwdrivers with every size bit used on a Briggs/Techumseh so I just grabbed the one I needed to remove the cover, etc. A pressure washer that would remove paint to take dried grass off the bottom of the deck, and an angle grinder to sharpen the blade ON the machine in many cases. Impact tools to remove the big nut. Tried to buy the business but the land was worth $1.5M and the shop's income simply wouldn't cover a note like that. Yes, we lost our ass on more complex problems but did them as a challenge. I recall a carburetor with an internal casting flaw that threw us for a loop! Nothing short of x-rays would have made that one any easier to diagnose. I left all the 2-strokes to an older guy who was already deaf, since repairing $100 string trimmers made no sense to me at all. BTW, a "Honda" mower is no btter than a Briggs or Tecumseh, just harder and more expensive to work on. Their tracked snowblowers use thin sheet metal, work well, but can't ingest gravel wthout damage.
@dagrote1
@dagrote1 5 лет назад
@@wade727nelson I had more than my share of this, Wade : "I recall a carburetor with an internal casting flaw that threw us for a loop!" I'm seeing more and more of that, now that new carbs can be had for under $20 from China. About 50% of them have flaws that can't be predicted or fixed on the bench. It's a killer because, as you said, you can end up putting in hours and hours into a $150 weed eater and end up with only $60 for your trouble -- if it can be repaired at all. Even then, pressure problems, like the one Donny diagnosed in this video, can mimic the symptoms of a fuel delivery issue. I've learned the hard way, to my great consternation and grief, that you really shouldn't begin work on a 2-cycle engine unless you've done a spark, compression AND a leak down test. Since getting a small engine ready for a leak down test can take 30 minutes on some machines --unless you're superman -- you already have 45 minutes time on task just to do the diagnostics. Bottom line, it has to be a really high dollar 2-cycle machine to justify the cost of any repair.
@dagrote1
@dagrote1 5 лет назад
@@vistadrummer09 Correct. We might also add that there is nothing more environmentally damaging than a cheap 2-cycle machine. Since a repair is hardly ever financially justified, they just end up getting tossed into the landfill, and there goes all the labor and materials for its construction and delivery. If you're clever enough, have the patience and the space, you can start a collection of dead, cheap 2-cycles and tear off parts when you need them to keep costs down, but there's no way a professional shop can make good on shop time, which generally has to be upwards of $75 an hour just to keep the lights on.
@Mr_Tecumseh
@Mr_Tecumseh 5 лет назад
Over the last 10 years, the majority of small 2 cycle equipment has been produced as throw away products. Unless its a Stihl or echo or a few other commercial grade brands, they arent worth fixing. Its all junk made by the same corporation out of hong kong. Thats why you see most small engine mechanics wont waste their time on the newer off brand crap because its not worth it. Now if its a stihl that costs 5-6 hundred it's still worth it to have it repaired or repair it yourself, especially a lot of the older stuff. Theirs still plenty of money to be made on the larger 4 cycle equipment and the commercial stuff and being in this industry, you come across a lot of stuff for next to nothing or nothing and fix it up for a nice profit. Its not just repairs, its sales, service and many folks branch out and make how to videos and all that foot traffic brings in revenue too. Us small engine mechanics don't get discouraged that easy. Theirs plenty of work and good money in this industry. I'm sure Don is doing just fine and its also satisfying to take something that isn't working apart, fix it put it back together and see it run again. It takes a special breed of people to do that. We need people like that.

@mooregoodink6971
@mooregoodink6971 Год назад
What would cause a small two-stroke engine to generate crankcase vacuum yet virtually no pressure? Am I doing something wrong? The chainsaw is a Craftsman and probably forty years old (similar to a Poulan micro saw, I believe) and with all the apertures plugged, as you advise, (sheet metal plates with cork gaskets as interfaces) my MV 8500 Mityvac displays about 2psi on the gauge (indicating a massive air leak) but no bubbles. When switched to vacuum, the test equipment quickly generates 7 in Hg. The reason I'm investigating is because the machine runs erratically when warm and has a vibration in its handle, indicating crankcase bearings and seals could be worn and leaking. Thank you for your excellent series of videos.

How to Replace a Seal. Using a set of calipers, measure the deepth of the old seal. Carefully drill a small hole in the side of the seal centered between the ID and OD. Install a self tapping screw into this hole. Be very careful not to drill or install the screw to deep or you will damage the crankshaft bearing. Using either a slide hammer or channel locks, grab the head of the screw and pull the seal out. Be very careful not to damage the running surface of the crankshaft or the seal bore. Clean everything up and install the new seal with the appropriate seal driver or a deep socket. Make sure to install the new seal to the same deepth as the old one. A little oil on the crankshaft surface and a light smear of silicon in the seal bore. Make sure to preform a second pressure/vacuum test. It's a good idea to give the crankshaft a turn when pressure testing older seals.

I'm going to have to do something like that to my Briggs & Stratton 3.5 HP engine this weekend. I lapped the valves in today & I still get a misfire at idle speed,I noticed that the top of the engine is dirty so I want to check if the top crankshaft oil seal is sucking in air & blowing out crankcase vapours. The valves did need a lap job because the exhaust valve was just carboned up so it was all black whereas the inlet valves face was eccentric. I want to plug up the PCV tube & blow air into the oil filler hole through a piece of rubber hose to pressurise the crankcase then to use soapy water to see if there are any bubbles present,which would indicate that it has an air leak.

Thanks for making this video did you make your own parts to to the pressure test?

When you draw a vacuum it is in (Inches of HG) not PSI. You misspoke. Also, what are the symptoms of a leak? Thanks.
@CarstenLorenzen12V
@CarstenLorenzen12V 8 лет назад
+zzzdogutube The symptoms would be a lean running engine, as it would draw more air to the gas/air mixture, past the carburettor. This could result in "bogging" when you open the throttle, fast idle rpm, overheating engine and worst case scenario - seized piston.

Thanks, that what I thought.

+zzzdogutube In addition to Carstens comment, a saw that won't idle properly, no matter HOW much you adjust the carb is another symptom. Sometimes it will rev up without even touching the throttle.

So might this seal cause the saw to leak oil from the bottom. Or would there be a seal for the chain oiler?? Thanks awesome helpful vids i cant afford to keep throwing away tools!

Hey Donny I don't know how to ask you a question but I'll ask here trying to get a respond. I just started my generator last snow storm and it was very loud and sparks were coming out of the exhaust. It's about a 10 year old generator maybe older. Need some advice

+abigail gabriel I recently watched one of Donny's videos that showed the same thing on an engine. The exhaust valve was stuck, or out of adjustment. Look for this video and I think it will help.

I have an 038 magnum Ii. I did the same but blocked from behind the carb covering the impulse line. Holds 6psi for over 5 min at bdc, both vac and press, but compression test from the spark plug leaks out, wont hold compression when cranking. what am I doing wrong? Great vids thanks!

No scoring on the cylinder, and it does run. Im thinking its piston rings.. meh!

@@MrSparkums did you ever figure out what was causing low compression, I have no scoring and changed rings and still low compression, thanks todd

@@toddc4d MI It wound up being the rings.. I would invest in a mighty vac, and make some block off plates. No way to eliminate Gasket or seal leaks without a p/v test.. I wound up selling it for a pretty penny.. Instant regret...

On snowmobile engines,there is a rubber plug kit you have to get that plugs all the openings. I used to use starting fluid if the engine still ran,any increase in rpms indicated leaking seals. That doeant work on triple cylinder snowmobiles and twins with a joined head or lower end seal between cylinders. Then you had to plug all the ports and pressure test that way. I remember earlier Polaris triples had issues with the seals between the crank on the lower end. The middle seals always failed. Skidoo also had issues with the 583's. I dont miss those days. I hated triple cylinders. The best thing they ever did was stop making them. A twin cylinder engine with larger pistons produced the same hp. Oh well. Am I dating myself?

Hi, great video. I have a MS361 and the same adaptor you used for the leak down test. What did you fabricate to use it with the handle/gas tank assy removed? It makes the procedure a lot simpler! Thanks

Dony: I'm waiting on my order of a MityVac vac/pressure gauge to test my saws. I'm wondering if this would make things easier? I propose using a rubber stopper in the intake boot. It might have to be held in place under pressure, but may work very well under vacuum. Then perform test through the impulse line. What do you think?

If a person install oil seal incorrectly on PTO side of MS660, say spring fell off inside seal, will vacuum test spot that seal? Thanks

Amazing video, thank you Dony! Your videos are sooo helpful! I have a Stihl BG55 blower that I want to leak down test. Do you know how I could do that without a bellows? Is there some kind of adapter I can use to add pressure or vacuum through the spark plug hole. Thank you!!!!
