I think it's ironic that when I was eating an omni diet (a pretty crappy, junky diet!), nobody ever said anything about deficiencies. When I went vegan, suddenly everyone is a dietitian and asking me about nutrients! When I ask an omni if they are getting enough protein or calcium, they have no idea themselves! But somehow the vegan, who eats all that fruit and veg, is the one who is gonna get sick. SMH
Same thing happened to me. People generally aren't good with nutrition - including me in the past, they just have this idea eating a 'regular' diet is ok, and that consuming some items from the main food groups makes it balanced. But really, the regular diet people many have is not a good one, and if someone doesn't track what they eat, they just don't know if it's balanced or not.
Summary for quick reference: 2:11 Protein (seitan, soy products, nuts) 3:09 Vitamin B12 (definitely supplement) 3:55 DHA Docosahexaenoic acid (Omega-3) (chiaseeds, ground flax, walnuts) 6:10 Iron (add vitamin C to eg. dark leafy greens (eg. spinach)) 7:16 Zinc (pumpkin seeds; generally shouldn't be a problem) 8:12 Vitamin D (sun or UV exposed mushrooms) 8:50 Calcium (do not supplement)
@Velle you're the one who don't know what he's talking about Iron : most things that lower iron absorbtion are things found in meat. in both where those are present, those iron-lowering nutrient are far from a big enough concentration compared to iron concentrations to really affect us. Cooking get rid of most of those. Zinc : cooking (among other things) food correctly drastically reduce phytic acid in food Vitamin D : he said it in the video, sun exposed mushrooms help the diet Calcium : yes, vegetal milk do have calcium check out the table in this article : www.msn.com/en-us/health/nutrition/which-type-of-milk-is-healthiest/ar-BBGmOu1 Yes, algae are plant, and already part of vegan diet. yes, plant protein are "complete" (what does incomplete even mean here ?!) hod do you think herbivores get their muscle mass ? protein was never a problem in a balanced vegan diet
Been on a whole foods plant based diet for 23 year. Never had any deficiencies. My weight stays the same. I still weigh what I did in my freshman year of college. 145 lbs. I am 6' tall. At 60 years of age I feel great, and am very active with no heart disease, diabetes, cancers, arthritis or any of the other maladies that are plaguing my peers. It has been really easy, and I love what I eat. It is a great lifestyle.
After 10 years I got iron and vitamin B12 deficiency. Now I get B12 injections. I suffer from so many awful symptoms. Don’t believe the hype that said you don’t need supplement. This is untrue. You must take iron &B12 starting on day one of the diet. Iron absorption from non animal products is like 5%. meaning you won’t reach the daily amount and you’ll end up with deficiency.
Tala Mussell Also I think Freelee doesnt want to be subscribed to lots of ppl like I all of her social media cause she wants to focus on putting out videos versus following and scrolling etc
1 year being vegan and rn feeling so alone, can somebody help? ive been reading a lot of experiences of ex vegans gettin brain fog and tiredness while on a plant based diet, currently im feeling so tired and foggy but im not sure if it's because of my diet and i have to admit im worried about it, ive been supplementing a lot lately and i think that's kinda unnatural if u know what i mean, i dont wanna eat animal products ever again but i think we need to accept that vegan diet can be kinda deficient more easily and i feel so baaaad about it i just want things to be different, i like to think that human body is going to evolve to absorb easily all the nutrients from plants, but we need to consider the fact that our diet can be inaccesible to a lot people with food intolerances and poor gut health and for sure could be expensive because of supplements, i dont want to be that person but somebody feel the same way? what can i do?
@@interwebffyou’re not alone! i’ve been vegan for 2 years, never felt or been better, and i only take 1 supplement: b12, once a week. I focus on eating foods high in nutrients, whether it is pita bread/ bagels, or edamame/tofu, or fortified milks and yogurts, cereals, trail mix, lots of carbs (pasta, rice and beans, etc). i have six meals a day: high calorie breakfast with at least 3 different fruits, and cereal with milk, a mid-school snack, usually edamame or pita, lunch (lots of vegetables, usually a salad and a bagel), then a midafternoon snack of trail mix and a protein shake, and then a high calorie and high-carb dinner; usually pasta or rice and beans or something similar. That’s what has been working for me so far!
Get used to that. People who engage in critical thinking don't go vegan. It's bad for health and it does nothing to help the environment. It does nothing to help animals. Veganism is trendy right now, but that will not always be the case. There are more cases every day of people losing their health due to veganism. You very likely won't be vegan in three years. There's a reason for that.
@@tommycharles4666 there’s literally no evidence that veganism is bad for the environment and the animals, but there’s overwhelming evidence that it’s the best diet for those two things. People worsen their health by being vegan by not taking it seriously, and eating only broccoli for every meal - there’s a wrong way to do every diet, veganism is one exception. but if you prepare and plan your meals, then your health will inevitably improve, as veganism when done correctly is great for your health. Check out vegacy.net for all the sources about this
so glad you addressed the 'eat as much as you want and won't gain weight' myth - it probably doesn't realistically help anyone convert to veganism long term as this then allows them to claim veganism 'doesn't work' when they inevitably gain weight from eating so many plant-based calories
Very true, however the first month of going vegan I ate so much, and still lost 10lbs. After that it has slowed down, but still looking weight. Paying more attention to my diet tho.
Meg Lean Idk since I switched to whole plants it becomes so high in fiber and hydration It's practically impossible for me to overeat and go against the newfound and natural sense of feeling satiatied that comes from ingesting these foods...I never count calories really. I feel like people eating processed vegan foods (smoothies, mix, puree, oils and sauces) are far more likely to overeat and loose this feeling of appetite loss after eating...more research should be done between the interaction of satiation, calorie intake and density, metabolic rate and overall energy levels to explain this ..
You are so non-drama, I can never disagree, I can never get angry! All your videos are good for is effective actism. All I can do is say thank you for doing the research for me. Thanks!!!
Just got my blood work and physical done an everything is looking great after 5years as a Vega. By the way I had a liver transplant back in 91 and hodgkins decease at the same time. Veggies saved my life!
I went from vegetarian to vegan 5 months ago. I also do regular physical activity. I've recently tested my blood concerned of any deficiency. All values were perfect. The doctor congratulated and said that it was a rather long time that they didn't have a patient with such good values and low bad cholesterol. Thanks for your tips. :)
I really love this video! I have some friends who say they don't want to go vegan/vegetarian because they're afraid of deficiencies, and I've tried to tell them that it's much easier than they think. One friend is afraid of not getting enough iron because she's anemic, but I'll make sure to show her this video!
Plant-Based Danny Yeah, unfortunately some people don't understand that it's really not that hard being vegan when it comes to getting what your body needs.
I (vegan 2 yrs) recently gave blood - actually platelets- with an omnivore friend of mine. The blood center analyzes our stats of course, and she was low iron and I was fine! Go figure.
Hey, I thought Freelee unsubscribed from Mics vide... Oh wait a minute, it's just the"slightly" less woo woo budget version of Freelee. ... PUT DOWN YOUR PITCH FORKS, IT WAS A JOKE. Don't hurt me.
BananaBlondie108 i wonder if you can name a single civilization in all of human history that was vegan, I'll help zero! veganism only came about because of meat eaters, opportunistic humans in history ate whatever they could if they the advent of agricultural was so nutrient fulfilling eveyone would have become vegan it would be safer and easier. so why didn't they
I have been looking at videos about info on vegan diet and it’s a lot of drama about the plant and killing animals. It nice to find info that’s just about choice to cut meat and how it will affect me. Glad I tuned in.
I've had the opposite experience but I was eating raw, my dr has told me my iron is drastically low and yet I eat tons of stuff that's high in iron. I've been getting dizzy, breathless and have had migraines and cold hands and feet. So I have been prescribed an iron supplement. I have a number of health issues so it's possible something else is causing it.🙁
I was constantly anemic, fat and simple minded throughout childhood and teenage years... Fast forward to a time where I can buy my own food with COLOUR (vegan) and my blood is perfect, witty mind, fast reflexes, bursting in positivity and energy. My family are so oblivious to the link between their diets and health, that they just say ''lucky you got the good genes''.... No no no I didn't but worked hard to reverse the damage.... but my words fall on death ears. RANT OVER! ;)
@@cleoldbagtraallsorts3380 Hey, I do hope things have picked up for you, but I just wanted to say that low B12 can also cause anemia sometimes. Also, caffeine worsens iron absorbtion so one shouldn't drink coffee and tea 2 hours before and after a meal. And instead should add vitamin C, like Mic said in the video. Of course, it can be caused by all kinds of things and I hope the source of your problems has been or will be sorted out, but every little helps and maybe if you didn't know there things it could help. :)
Back when I was a meat eater I had serious problems maintaining healthy hemoglobin and iron levels. Now as a vegan my iron levels are perfect and I donate blood 2-3 times a year with no issues!
PlantbasedAthlete chia seeds are my staple! I eat beans every other day not my favorite thing to digest so I don't eat it daily. I would get more into hemp seeds if they didn't taste so bad
PlantbasedAthlete so you do realize being a vegan is only possible in countries like the United States where where economically privileged and have the ability to ship Foods in from all over the country at different times of the year when things aren't in season are you telling me that you're going to go to Afghanistan or Mozambique and be a true vegan they're absolutely not no Society in human history has ever been vegan omnivores that are opportunistic that will take whatever they can get if you're getting your protein Source from plants I assume it would be something like chickpeas quinoa or lentils what if you live in somewhere like Minnesota in January and you don't have a way to get those sent to you you certainly not going to grow them if you want to be vegan that's fine but let's not pretend that it's for everybody in the world and that is just such a simple task to take on
8bitmagic just like another comment I've made it's only possible because you live in an economic society that allows for such things because we have a privilege to be able to ship in different foods that aren't in season from around the world where they are let's not pretend that you can be a vegan all over the world and still have a full nutritional diet
So ironic that you're commenting on a video like this. Hopefully those people that you told would have no more depression due to eating Vegan didn't die or anything lol
I was scared of this at first, like you said. Certain deficiencies and a little bit of research helped. Its good that he made a video on it touching many important topics/questions people may have.
Schools don't tend to do a great job of teaching nutrition in the first place. They definitely dont teach how to be healthy on a vegan diet in a modern age, so I'm not really sure what you're getting at.
lucky Mic, as he may have said BS in that case at 5:55 : Freelee's "30 bananas a day" have 0.027g ALA per 100g (USDA #09040), or 0.035g ALA according french Ciqual (#13005). 120g per average banana (rather small ones). So we have a total of 0.97 .. 1.26g ALA. Now that reaches the RDA of ALA *). The ripeness of her brown tiger bananas further increases ALA content **). In reality she also consumes some higher ALA foods. That shows how difficult it is to miss omega 3 on a (whole) fruit centered diet. The body/liver easily produces the 3mg DHA brain requirement from that (PMID 25920364). A little more criticical would be omega 6 (LA) , but you easily get that from other foods, little nuts/seeds, oats etc. *) "The current daily recommended intake of ALA for adults over age 19 is 1,100 mg for women and 1,600 mg for men" **) PMID 667087 "However, the fatty acid composition of the lipid did change during ripening. This change was confined largely to the phospholipid fraction, in which there was an increase in the proportion of linolenic acid and a decrease in the proportion of linoleic acid."
@@PW-yv3sc those are the nutrients you need to build strength. Maybe not meat, but you need the protein from at least the dairy. I either don't believe you are vegan or strong. They don't match with one another.
@@unlimitedpower4101 bruh where tf do you think animals get their protein? Why tf do you think we stop drinking our mother's milk at 1-2 years old? I just wish I could find something like the staple vegan meal plan. Something with a few meals that are easy to prepare that can get me into this way of eating without having to worry about missing out on nutrients I need.
Download the Daily Dozen app. Unlike other health apps, you don't need to type in what you eat, you just check off items from the list. Saves me the energy to worry about my nutrition. Also, Mic is being dramatic about all these numbers. We're not machines, our body does just fine with inadequate nutrition once in a while - most people eat an inadequate omnivorous diet and aren't dying off. No reason why someone on a WFPB can't do well. If you still get deficiencies, big deal! Anyone on any diet can. They can be fixed.

Noah Hughes That’s understandable. A good staple is 1: hemp seed / quinoa / dates made as an oatmeal. 2: pumpkin/ sunflower/ almond butter. 3: juiced cilantro & herbs. For other meals simply throw. Complimentary foods together in Green Smoothies, green salads, and soups. Cilantro specifically has high k1 to make->>k2 Hemp seed amino acids and protein. And more Greens for calcium and iron I’m emphasizing greens because it’ll keep you from getting cavities you need the K2. Herbs and vegetables Hemp seed and quinoa Pumpkin/sunflower butter That alone will give you caloric density, protein, fat, carbs. Magnesium, iron, calcium, zinc, and the DHA , EPA will be creates because these foods have the proper omega3 vs omega 6 ratio. So yah Hemp seed. Quinoa, made into oatmeal and sweetened with dates. Is a meal Cilantro juice is a beast for k1 for k2 I’d either water it down Because it’s potent. But you need it for bones and teeth When I stoped eating these foods and started entertaining processed foods I got cavities. The vegan burgers and cheeses are not healthy I’d argue that in some ways they’re less healthy than proper meat, proper milk, proper butter, or proper eggs.
Yo PB and J!!!! cheap quick and relatively healthy depending on the sugar amount and stuff, I sometimes just put straight fruit on my peanut butter sandwich it’s way good and vegan
I can't believe in all these years I've never seen your channel! You are by far my favorite. Thank you for making videos based on facts with cites and sources to support it. You gained a new subscriber!
Congrats! Love your channel. I am a life long vegetarian who turned vegan two years ago. I am 59 but people think I am 20 years younger. My husband had a health scare and I convinced him to join me and he is hooked. Love all of your insights.💖💖
I've been vegan for five years, I cannot believe I haven't come across your videos before but I'm so thankful I found you now... And am currently binge watching. I've noticed some small changes in my nails, gut and skin that are pointing to classic vitamin deficiencies since I started eating an embarrassing amount of vegan junk food. Back to the whole foods and incorporating more nuts and seeds which I've avoided my entire vegan life thanks to coming to veganism after watching freelee (still grateful for her even if she is a little crazy) and vegan documentaries. It's a beautiful journey and you never stop learning and adjusting but there's never a need to eat animals or their secretions. Thank you for your awesome videos.
Thanks for this. You are a much needed voice of reason in this community. This new trend of "vegan" youtubers claiming they all have definiciencies without taking a blood test is absurd, if you think you're low on something, focus on the Vegan foods you can eat with those nutrients. I eat a relatively "junky" vegan diet, but I don't go whining on the internet when something goes wrong in my body blaming it on my vegan diet. It's so nice to hear your well thought out, scientific-based videos. Keep up the work. - A silent, but big fan! xP
Thank you for being a responsible vegan RU-vidr. You are hilarious and are my favorite because you back up your claims. Another popular one made a video a few days ago saying he does not know why about some things but he doesn't care. And advises "not to worry" about certain very important things.
You should discuss Iodine deficiency. For many years I have not used added salt. As a mostly raw vegan, I eat a lot of produce, but the soil doesn't contain enough iodine. In the US, iodine deficiency was common until iodized salt. They also added iodine to bread as a dough conditioner but replaced it with the dangerous halogen bromine instead, which prevents iodine uptake in the thyroid. Now Americans are getting 50% less iodine, and whole food vegans who don't use salt could be much more at risk. I have spent a year at an endocrinologist because of my thyroid and 6 months of pills. The doctors wouldn't do an iodine deficiency test, because they think it is a third world disease. However, when my medicine wasn't working, I ordered my own iodine deficiency test at a reputable lab. Guess what, I am iodine deficient, which could be affecting my thyroid. Apparently the seaweed I was eating over the years wasn't enough. I just ordered Detoxadine nascent iodine because it had excellent reviews and comes from an unpolluted source. I am hoping it reverses my deficiency and I will retake a test in a few months. But I think there could be so many salt-avoiding vegans with this deficiency... Please do a video on iodine and veganism!!!
I went Vegan to Stop Cruelty when I was 56 and lived on whole foods plant based....the first thing that happened was my life was saved because I had been very sick...I was fat sick & dying and thought at my age people start getting sick...big surprise when my body completely healed within the first 2 months on plant based😮 I didn't take B12 supplements for 3 years. My blood test indicated my B12 was excellent. I'm now 65 and have not been sick in the past 9.5 years...not even a cold/flu/covid - I didn't get vaccinated for Ethical reasons, I'm against animal testing. My health is absolutely incredible and I'm so appreciative to that Vegan that showed me what I was paying for and appreciative that my compassion and ethics saved my life. My family and friends are Vegan and we're very healthy. I do now take B12 because of my age...just in case. I should have another blood test to check but I feel extremely healthy.
Omg I love you! Thank you so much for being my brand of vegan! You’re smart and do your research. We need more people like you so I can stop being ashamed of my vegan label 😬
Wow, Mic. You are about to hit 300k subscribers!! And to think, you never even expected to hit 50k. You deserve every sub, and I hope you are one to break a million someday. 🌱✌ The animals thank you. 🐮🐷🐔🐣🐟
I agree. It is possible to overdose supplements in general. Remember that the negative consequences of a b12 deficiency is a lot worse than acne, though. So be sure to take enough.
To combat this, eating vitamin C and vitamin A can help a lot. You can find vitamin C in citrus fruits (like oranges, lemons and limes) and vitamin A in foods like carrots, broccoli and sweet potato. Some people apply vitamin C to their face, but it’s far more stable eaten than applied. Vitamin A (in the form of retinoids) can also be applied to the face, but you want to get a prescription for that because it’s quite strong.
This was very helpful when I first became vegan, today is my one year vegan anniversary and I wanted to thank you for sharing this information, this video really helped me get to where I am now!
Thank you for this important info! I'm transitioning to being vegan. I've already cut out dairy and eggs. now I'm down to eating a little bit of meat once a day. I was concerned to cut it out fully because of fear of getting a deficiency but now I feel more at ease to go vegan after watching your video. I'm taking b12 already but I think I should buy a vegan dha supplement too
Also my main issue is that I am on a more restrictive diet for now to help me heal from a chronic condition. for now I don't eat grains, beans, nuts and seeds. is it still safe for me to go vegan if I don't eat these foods? I know they have nutritional value but I'm going low fat to clean out my sluggish liver and poor digestion
Alex how is Swayze not actually vegan? I don't agree with everything she says but I'm pretty sure she eats a vegan diet - despite the philosophy behind it, that's what 'vegan' means to most people. Also, are you OP's doctor/dietician? If not I'd suggest you stop telling him/ what to eat and what not to eat. You don't know what condition they have, so you probably shouldn't tell them what to eat if you don't know that.
I too would like to know this condition. It is of genuine curiosity. No eggs, dairy, beans, grains, nuts and seeds. Yes to meat. What condition is this?
I think abstractswirls got the DHA recommendation from this video, see around the 4:20 mark. To review, an algae based supplement is not an animal product, so therefore vegan, an, as suggested is an additional insurance, so why recommend he not take it?
I now hold 2 years being vegan and have never needed to take b12. I'm an athlete, biking around the world and love surfing big waves. On top of eating loads of fruit and veggies, I eat lots of sea herbs (bladder wack & seamoss) as well as mushrooms. Dr. Sebi and Paul Stamets have taught me a lot. Perhaps a proper balance between fasting, eating plants (many from the sea!), and eating fungi is the ticket for humans. Stay away from anything processed (including oil). Herbs are for the healing of the nations, bless up
Kevin Curran just be careful. Your body has enough stored of it to last years. Most deficiencies won’t show up for as much as 10 years, but then when it does, you’re in trouble. 2 years is not a long time.
patty 8873 thanks for the heads up! Perhaps it's not wise for me to share how I've lived as everyone follows their own path. I only show concern for the b12 phenomena as it may elude people from choosing not to eat animals as one might think "its not natural to need to take supplements, so wouldn't it be healthier to just eat the meat".. To rebuddle your claim, check out the breatharian Victor Truviano (one of many) who has lived for over 10 years with out food or water, surviving on the energy of the universe commonly known as prana. Namaste my friend
Kevin Curran thanks for your comment. Im thinking like this sometimes: Why do we need to supplement..? it would be more natural to eat a fish. (This is just a feeling. Im still supplementing b12.) a lot of people on a helthy diet are sick and some people on an unhealthy diet are thriving. Because there are other things too, that are important, not only nutrition. There is some ppl who dont eat, drink. How come they dont die? 😉 We might not understand every aspect of life, but apparently some ppl do. Its so interesting for me
I also cured my anemia after going vegan!!! I have not taken iron supplements for over a year and my iron levels and red blood cell count is still completely normal. I used to become anemic after only a couple of weeks of not taking iron supplements. Even while being pregnant my iron levels and red blood cell counts are normal (without iron supplements) just by eating a varied vegan diet
How did you do it? because iron from vegetable sources needs the presence of B12 vitamin to be absorbed, and even the most lenient vegetarian diets (and I mean vegetarians who allow themselves to consume eggs and milk) have B12 deficiencies. Also, no need to mention them iron supplements, because no matter how many iron supplements a person takes, if there's not an equivalent presence of vitamin B12 to absorb it then it will just be eliminated by the body as waste. No problem to admit that you had vitaminic supplements, there's no bad in it (tho there is in lying and misleading, specially when your lies can put a fetu's life in danger for no reason other than your bullshit pride and phony moral superiority).
Conor McTapOut curing cancer, diabetes and anemia? Thats laughable. Diabetes- hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, both are cause by blood glucose levels directly effected by carbohydrate intake. Anemia- malnourishment that prevents the proper absorption of nutrients, caused by a lack of iron. Cancer- generally caused by weak or defective cells and many other variables. Cell health relies heavily on both cholesterol and saturated fat consumption, Vitamins A, K, D and E which all require the consumption of fats to absorb.
Conor McTapOut Do you even know how anemia works? Do you know the difference between heme iron and non-heme iron? Have you paid any attention, like, at all, to what I've said about vitamin B12 being necessary for the absorption of non-heme iron, and how even vegetarians who eat milk and eggs have deficiencies of said vitamin? Well of course you didn't... why do I even bother asking? Is it really that hard to admit that there's no such thing as a miracle diet and that following a vegan diet without pills is impossible?
Eat Veg maybe Mike can go to somewhere like Afghanistan or Mozambique and explain to those people how being vegan is much healthier and it would be so easy to do in those countries. Do all vegans understand that you can only be vegan because you live in the modern Industrial world where foods can be grown out of season and shipped worldwide so if you live in Minnesota you're just going to grow tomatoes and basil and January we live in a privileged Society that makes it possible to be vegan humans are naturally an opportunistic omnivore look at all of the tribes that live in Africa they eat everything they can possibly find and they live to an old age
Thanks Mic. This is my go to video for info when I'm deficient in a nutrient. I use Cronometer and when I'm not getting a particular item, I come here to find out how!
there's a guy named mike sheridan that wrote a douchey article titled "vegans suck at science" on t-nation disputing meat's adverse effects on the environment and in causing cancer. a bunch of my meat-eating friends are citing it as an excuse to continue eating meat. it'd be cool to get vid debunking that dude.
i’m 3 weeks into going vegan overnight and have stressed so much about the fact that i haven’t perfected my eating and often times eat on the “junkier” side of the diet. kinda relieved to hear someone finally say that’s okay to start off with. i have zero vegan friends nor a community for resources, so if anyone has helping tips, send them my way!
They have a bunch of books on plant based...Dr. Mc Dougal has written a bunch of books and made a lot of money. Look up his you tube channels...he is something like 72 years of age...It is really simple and the best vegan diet out there...he has millions of followers...great stuff...
I love your videos, the only flaw here is that I cannot show it to my mum who I would truly like to convince to those healthy habits and make her aware, as I'm from Poland and she doesn't speak English. We need someone like you here in Poland :) Thanks and keep up the great work!!
LITERALLY the same problem, I'm Latvian and my mum doesn't speak English very well. I want her to read How Not To Die, I want her to watch this, I want her to understand what she's doing to herself and the planet, but I can't show her the sources of the information or anything.
I just came here again to review the chia dose for getting ALA - DHA conversion, and its still accurate. Thanks Mic, your work is a milestone for modern vegans.
You're one of the only ones keeping it raw (no pun intended) and real on the subject of veganism and health backed by facts dude! Great work! How did you decide to start this?
I know What I Eat in A Day videos are super cheesy, but it would be interesting if you did one where you go through how much of each vitamin/nutrient you are consuming in a normal day. It would be another easy way to see how getting all of these nutrients is feasible. Thanks for all the information!
I'd like to think that I'm recovered from anorexia, but the fact that you mentioned how overwhelming restriction can be for some people, especially people entering veganism... Is so important. I've been subscribed to you for a few months now, but each time I watch you continue to mention things that I find be so important and quite often missed by other RU-vidrs. So I just wanted to say... thank you
I Just want to say "thank you". I have been vegan for a very long time. I have used a couple of your videos to spread the word to my classmates. The Science of Nutrition class I am in does not share all of the plants that support our vitamin intake needed.
He said lockdown.. he knew. But seriously, thank you for this video! I've been struggling to get back into being plant-based and this information is helping me to be more prepared (and excited tbh) this time!
Hey mic, just found you yesterday and started watching. Thanks for your videos I really enjoy them and am gleaning a great amount of knowledge from them. I have been researching veganism for a little while and finally decided to join the team of healthy individuals. Keep up the good work.
Getting enough zinc on a vegan diet is easy, the main issue is that certain vegan foods that are considered "superfoods" such as certain legumes, nuts, cocoa powder, sunflower seeds, avocado, dark leafy greens, etc...are also high in copper. Copper and zinc are antagonists, meaning if the copper consumption too high then zinc will be too low by default even if you eat more than the RDA of zinc, same goes vice versa. Where the vegan diet can get unhealthy is when there is overconsumption of both copper and manganese, which is very easy to do when eating larger than normal servings of the aforementioned foods. Manganese and copper are pro-oxidants and abundant in many of the healthy plant foods, so it's best to eat a variety of foods and not just a few of the so-called superfoods every day.
Mic would cite Dr. Michael Greger to avoid it. A certain amount of whole coconut is ok, but whole food plant based diets are ideal. No oil is recommended. Get your healthy fats from avocados, nuts and seeds.
Fantastic video, thanks so much for posting! I have been whole food plant-based for almost 4 years now and I’ve noticed the last several months that I am tired as heck. I could be lacking certain vitamins or minerals so this video really helped. Thanks again!
Today is the beginning of my 4th week. I eat tons of leafy greens, beans, nut milk, and I definitely do feel tired sometimes but definitely not at the level when I was eating whatever (dairy, eggs, & meat). If I were to put it into a scale of 1-10 and 10 being really tired, I'd rate that before the diet I was a 7 and I'd rate myself being at a 3 right now.
I donate plasma twice a week and they take my iron and protein levels before I’m eligible to donate. I used to be low on both when I was eating chicken and beef and pork trying to get my protein levels up. Now that I’m eating more plant based my levels have never been so high.
Potato Strong so you know being a vegan is only possible in entitled countries like the United States where we have the ability to ship Foods at all seasons in so if you're going to get your protein from chickpeas lentils or quinoa where you going to grow that you certainly not going to if you're living in Minnesota January it is unnatural to be vegan as a human there's never been a society in history that is all vegan humans have developed to be omnivores and opportunistic to eat what is available at the time if you choose to be vegan that's fine but just be sure to understand that it's only possible in modern society with modern technology and it is not natural and don't push that as the one Holy Grail of diets for everybody
vonick1 we also can't all be hunter gathers anymore. Factory farming isn't natural. Raising animals to be food isn't natural. Eating meat isn't good for humans so we should leverage our technological advancements and eat a plant based vegan diet. Cheers.
Vitamin A isn't an issue if you are consuming enough fats see: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24899156 I believe the highest omega 6s containing items in a vegan diet are oils such as corn, grapeseed, safflower, sesame and sunflower oil. Not all oils are equal, flax oil, hempseed oil or canola oil all have less omega 6s. As for sources of omega 3, flaxseeds, hempseeds, walnuts, and green leafy vegetables are good vegan sources. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratio_of_fatty_acids_in_different_foods omega6:omega3 ratio should be 4:1 - 6:1 some say as high as 15:1 The standard American diet also suffers from a non optimal ratio of omegas, so it's not just a vegan issue.
Well from an evolutionary stand point we haven't evolved ways to deal with high amounts of sat fat and cholesterol either. We do much better eating plant based foods, grains and legumes are more akin to what we ate through out evolution than meat. Without tools/fire we wouldnt even be able to extract many calories from flesh because our teeth/jaw bio-mechanics aren't meant to eat large pieces of raw flesh. What, in your mind, is the ideal human diet that we evolved to eat? And please understand when talking about evolution we MUST be talking about hundreds of thousands to millions of years, not like 50k - 100k.
There is no bioavailable source of true b12 found anywhere other than animals and some algae. Stop spreading dangerous lies. Always supplement if you are vegan.
Joey Romacus check your resources and research. algae are sea vegetables. supplements are one way. the other is not a lie. you can go to any .org or .edu and find out for yourself.
Look up mushrooms, tempeh, nori sheets, and pond water as sources of Vitamin B12. It's also possible to synthesize and absorb B12 in our small intestines. However, I wouldn't recommend relying on these sources. I recommend people consume B12 fortified foods and beverages. For example, the soy milk I drink contains over 100% of my daily value of B12 in 8 ounces.
@@DesignatedOperator you can only get b12 by eating a shit load of algae. You would drown your body in pond water, not to mention it would have to have feces in it so you would probably make yourself sick. You can't absorb b12 from your small intestine. We don't make it there. It's made in our large intestine /colon where we can't absorb it. Stop spreading bullshit. You have to supplement as a vegan. There is no other choice without eating fistfuls of algae daily.
I'm 14 and decided to go vegan 2 weeks ago, I was pescatarian before for like 2 months before but I felt soooo bad for the innocent animals in the milk and fishing industry and I'm so thankful for all this useful information!!❤❤
@@carsonburke4727 I almost never crave animal products and always take my b12 vitamin. I had an issue with disordered eating a few months ago and havent got my period since then, I have ALWAYS been slightly underweight but that just really made it worse, I´m basically recovered now and just eat everything I want. I have to visit a dietician now because the doctor couldnt find estrogen in my blood, I´m convinced this is a late side effect of my disordered habits and my period stopped EXACTELY at that time. I just hope the doctors dont blame it on veganism, I dont want to eat animal products again :(
@@nurie8487 That sounds rough. I hope things get better for you. I went vegan about two years ago when I was 15, and I had a much easier time. I have some suggestions, if you're looking for them: I find craving for animal products can easily go away once you get a good list of tasty and healthy recipes and products. It's just a good idea overall. I'm not a nutritionist, but from what I understand, unhealthily low weight is adverse to estrogen production. But I'm sure your doctors will have much more nuance and good recommendations. There is no reasonable world where they will tell you that you can't go vegan anymore (if they do, they are nuts and you should find real doctors), but perhaps they'll tell you to avoid or focus on certain foods. A blood test is a good idea. If you can, I'd recommend also seeing a nutritionist and trying to schedule your meals. If you plan what you're going to eat and when, and track it all, you should have a good idea of weight gain, health prospects, etc.
You will be ok as long as you eat enough calories, too many vegans do not eat enough food. Most vegan animals are constantly eating(e.g. cows) eat large amounts of grass, Orangutans forage for food 60% -70% of their day. The second problem some vegans do not eat a large assortment(e.g. nutrient dense) foods. As a direct, result they become deficient in essential vitamins/minerals and have negative side effects(e.g. fatigue, excessive weight loss, brain fog). Take care.
A1 Vegan have you ever stop to consider how difficult it is to be a true vegan and have all of your nutritional requirements met if you don't live in a privileged Society like the United States being vegan is only possible because you can ship in different fruits and vegetables from around the world that aren't in season in other places if you're going to get protein from sources like chickpeas or quinoa where you going to get them if you live in Minnesota in January do you think people that live in Mozambique or Afghanistan or able to live like we do absolutely not humans have evolved to be opportunistic omnivores that eat what's available when it's available there hasn't been any society in human history that was vegan
vonick1 so how many times did you copy past this shitty ass comments? Most of them are simply people who said they liked the channel, and you decide to do your whinny snowflake about it.
Preston Garvey hahaha the snowflakes are the anti hunting, vegan, man bun, beard wearing, liberals, who would die up here in alaska if they had to fend for themselves and not rely on other people to grow their food for them.
vonick1 Doesn't change the fact that you're coming at people for no reasons at all. You copy past your novel on people that just liked the channel. Btw, it's nice to know that bringing politics in this was your first reaction. Way to go buddy.
vonick1 Remember that meme that says "how do you know if someone is a vegan? Don't worry they will tell you." I guess we have found our offended meat eater.
I couldn't live a comment in another video you did about someone called Blaire White. I don't understand who says that vitamin supplementation can damaged your liver. I became a vegetarian in 1973 ( in Argentina) , the only thing I was eating was cheese that I quit in 2003 after I started studying nutrition and I also find out how milk extraction was done. So, after 45 years of being vegetarian and 15 vegan, I don't have any deficiencies, the only thing I take is B12, and I teach Yoga and exercise everyday and feel grate at 62. I believe her problem is emotional , and who cares what other people think if you are vegan, in Argentina in 1973 being vegetarian, everybody was making fun of me , but I never eat meat again because I knew it was WRONG to eat a beautiful animal. People who become vegan and come back to eat meat where never convince of what they where doing and why.
Wow, 62 and still active is great. And you know, id rather take a supplement of b12 every day or so and dont need to harm animals because of it. People are making fun of me too (im from switzerland, a dairy culture) and while im not 100% vegan yet (at home i am 100% vegan, but in restaurants everything is made with cream sauces and cheese. I only go there like every 2 months or so, because of family or stuff). I truly hope switzerland becomes more vegan friendly on the country side
