Can pottery be dried too slowly?

I collect plastic from my husbands dry cleaning. It’s great because it comes in those thin large sheets. Plus they are clear so you can see inside to check your works progress without having to mess with it to often.

Please what did you put on the clay at the end? Is it oil?

Thanks Andy. Great info. It would be super if you could put together a live chat RU-vid Q&A each week, so your subscribers could address various issues we run into...kinda free-style. If you call it Andy Wards Sunday Morning Ceramic Revival, we can tell everyone not to bother us while we're in church... 🙏

LOL. I wouldn't mind doing a weekly livestream but am not exactly attracting huge crowds to my monthly livestream at this point, so I think this idea will have to wait. But thanks for the vote of confidence.

Giveaway Love all your videos. Watching from Ontario Canada. Found some ancient pottery from my area a couple years back that dates from somewhere between 300-1600AD. My husband and I have since been on our own recreation mission. We've learnt a lot from your videos. I really enjoy the talks from the conferences.

Great tip on how to minimize the formation of cracks on the pottery. Your information reminded me of a DIY episode from one of those DIY or How's it Made shows.... The episode was about a factory making toilet bowls. They air dried the product for over 3 days in a controlled environment, both temperature and humidity. We backyard potters don't have the capitol to invest into such a facility, but as you indicated, control/minimize the air flow and keep the drying time to more than a day or two should prove fruitful. Thanks for your guidance. Thanks for sharing.

Cracked my first attempt at a coiled bot yesterday. My puki's not fired yet, so I started with a flat bottom. Unfortunately, I set it on a non-porous banding wheel, which it stuck to very firmly. I also dripped water into the base as I was trying to keep the coils moist. I needed to wedge up a new batch of clay to complete the last couple of coils, and as it sat there waiting, the sides were drying and shrinking while the base was stuck to the surface. I should have taken it off and covered it up while it was waiting for its next coils. Oh, well, lesson learned. At least I could recycle the clay!

Giveaway. I recently made it back to New Mexico for a dear friends funeral. Went for a small hike and came across some small pottery sherds on another friends ranch. So amazing to see them. ❤❤❤

So true, the ancient sherds even very small and plain ones, can be a huge inspiration.

Thank you very helpful. I just finished a large pot with a narrow neck. The neck is still damp. do I then let the whole piece dry out some before I can flip it and cover it? I am 2 for 2 cracked pots so far. Really don't want to lose this one. At school we use plastic. I'm thinking cloth is better.

Great video, I use shopping bags from walmart to cover my pottery as it dries, that way it doesn't put stress on the rim if I were to set it upside down. I found that keeping the moist air it the pot sealed up at the top helps even drying as well. My pottery usually cracks in the fire when it cracks. That happens of course from the un even heat. These are good tips, thank you Andy.

@@AncientPottery What is temper?
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery 2 года назад
@@micheledickey4066 sorry, temper is non-plastic material added to the clay. Most often sand or grog.

We have an area with black cotton soil under which there is a layer of pretty pure white clay, but it is very expansive. Can this kind of clay be used for pottery as well?
@AncientPottery
@AncientPottery Год назад
The expansiveness means it will have a high shrinkage rate that might make it bad for pottery. Probably will be better used as slip painted onto the outside of a pot.
