16:10 shows the most important thing: 9 ohm. Too low even for highest speed. The thermal switch didn't disconnect for nothing. Twice. Partial short is present.

19:38 Exactly what I have been waiting for someone to address when 'oiling' a fan: the oil wick surrounding the bushing needs a good amount of 'fan oil' or other suitable non-detergent oil.

@rogeliobautista790
@rogeliobautista790 2 года назад
Sir the thick dust caused the coils to heat up due to poor air circulation inside the fan to cool the coils. Adding lower amp fuse will not do much help if you allow dust to accumulate. Just regularly clean and oil your fan will prolong its life.

somebody was generous enough to give me answer as I have the same question today via FB. I did open too my fan motor due to out-of-order problem. Unfortunately I broke the same type of thermal sensor /fuse . Try 2Amperes 250volts 135 degrees celcius.
@bluedavers
@bluedavers 5 лет назад
I enjoyed the video but need to comment on what you called a thermal "fuse". It is actually a one shot thermal switch. The amp rating is the maximum current for the switch, there is no wire to melt and open the circuit. The contacts of the thermal switch use a spring and wax pellet that melts at the rated temperature allowing the contacts to spring open breaking the circuit. When fans get dirty they will slow down and the motor will get hot and that's what happened to the one I got. I have bypassed the thermal switch but plan to replace it with a thermal circuit breaker that resets when it cools.

Question: A fan with a fuse preinstalled in the plug on the Live (Lasko) and 2 amp Thermal Fuse on the Neutral to the Capacitor, would you still recommend the preventative 1.5 amp glass fuse installed on the incoming Neutral (outside the Motor)?

@KluangmanCooleck

Winston Clarke the fast blow fuse were better than the fuse which I used ... Choose the smaller amp ... Let's say the thermal fuse were 2A 130c ... The extra fuse would be 1A ...
@mcliu3571
@mcliu3571 6 лет назад
I do not think this tip will actually serve the purpose of preventing the thermal fuse blown. The function of the thermal fuse is to prevent over heating of the coil and it works based on temperature. Whereas your added current fuse is located in the switch box where it is based on current drawn which is for different purpose.
@KluangmanCooleck
@KluangmanCooleck 6 лет назад
MC Liu yes .. your are correct at something there, but base on logic ,the thermal fuse were 2A 130c and it's will blow either when the amp in the coil over 2A or the temperature reached 130c .. which came first ? The coil will never heat up to 130c even if you run the fan for 24hrs full speed as long as the fan blades were spinning normally without getting stuck somewhere and the air circulation at the fan motor were normal without getting block by build-up dust ... And only when the fan blades were abnormal .. the load in the coil will rose and the amp will surely getting higher and do remember ,the add-on fuse were only 1.5A and if I have a 1A fuse with me, I will surely use the smaller one ... Anyway thanks for your opinions and thanks again for dropping by ...
@datylor1
@datylor1 6 лет назад
This info is so correct since one fuse blows because of an increase in temp from the coil over heating and the other is current drawn or current supplied.

@@KluangmanCooleck Don't think the Chinese really give H-type insulation in these fans. With a partial short the windings heat up even to 130+/-5 celsius and the fan rotating (I measured with a K-type thermocouple without cowling). I suspect that even 110-120 centigrade will cause melting/short in the laquer insulation in these fans. So the thermal switch disconnects, but some damage to the windings is already done. I would recommend a 100 centigrade switch replacement. And replacing the sintered bronze sleeves by ball bearings (like 6300zz or 6300rs for 10mm shafts) in fans with steel frames (not the rubbish aluminum like in this video).

Hi there, great videos :). Do these common fan run capacitors (mine is CBB61, 450VAC 1.2uf) tend to hold a charge, and what resistor should I bleed it with in that case?
@KluangmanCooleck
@KluangmanCooleck 6 лет назад
Resistor ? Did your fan using resistor to control the speed...like cycling fans for example..
@SireSquish
@SireSquish 6 лет назад
No, I meant using a spare resistor to bleed off any residual charge in the run capacitor so as to not get a shock from it, even out of circuit.
@KluangmanCooleck
@KluangmanCooleck 6 лет назад
if you a very sensitive to electricity kind of person,you just need to short circuit between L and N at the power plug with speed selector turn on before dismantling the fans for precaution but the residual charge in the capacitor were too small and its will fade away less than a minute after power off

A thermal fuse is not the same as a regular (glass) fuse. The 2A rating of your thermal fuse does not mean that it will blow above 2A. This means only that it should be used in a device that uses no more than 2A. Thermal fuses do not blow due to current overload or short circuit. They blow only because they get hot .

Judging from how black the tip is, I would say it's probably some generic cheap iron. Radioshack sold an iron similar to that which had junky nickel plated copper tips that would turn black and burn the nickel off. I would recommend something like a 40W Weller or Hakko soldering station. They're $50-$160, but well worth it, you'll spend more buying cheap replacement irons with tips that burn up.

I can send you a couple or two of these sleeve bushings, but you have to immerse them every year into a heated to 100 centigrade (boiling water bath) motor oil., Simple wetting of the outside of the bushings by oil (even SAE 5) will not let in enough oil to lubricate for a year of work (like 1000 hours of rotation).

@Kluangman Cooleck The purpose of a thermal fuse is to open and cut off power if temperatures get high too high. It is bad advice to say it is OK to take out the thermal fuse. If your fan didn’t have a thermal fuse, your house may have burned down. It is this important.
@bgregg55
@bgregg55 6 лет назад
the thermal fuse should always be the prime suspect on any small motor failure.
@stevek5416
@stevek5416 4 года назад
Adding the extra fuse will do nothing. The thermal fuse blows at the temperature written on the body of the fuse, not the current. Your fan failed because of poor maintenance, which caused the windings to overheat. To prevent this from happening again, you need to periodically clean the junk out of the air passages of the fan and to add lubrication for the bearings.
@Jethro.Maloku-le.Rey.Kalsitran
why do you add another 1.5A fuse when you could replace the one in the connector that is probably another 2A by the 1.5A one without any work ? Forget my question, I found the answer lower : wrong size !
