I legitimately have been striking the edge since I started playing when I was 12. I'm almost 30 and never realized, and was never told to hit the bow. I've cracked and broken so many cymbals over the years from zildjian a customs to paiste 2002s within MONTHS of purchasing them new, not knowing why. I was to the point where I was about to just buy an E kit and be done with acoustics altogether. This has legit helped me in a very real way. Thanks Zildjian.

I use an 18" K Custom fast crash tilted back behind my floor tom and I absolutely hammer it. It looks new after 7 or 8 years and that was purchased second hand. If it was flat it would be awkward to hit where it is placed. I think it looks dope too having super low cymbals tilted back. I get non stop compliments for looking and sounding very unique with my style.
@ZildjianCompany
@ZildjianCompany 7 лет назад
Hi Otto, most likely you are still striking the cymbal correctly. You can tilt the cymbal any way you like if it suits your style and body. As long as you're not striking through the cymbal or straight onto the edge, you're good to go. What we show here is geared towards most drummers' style.

I'm a Paiste guy, but much respect to Zildjian for this video! So nice of a company to learn their consumers how to protect their gear so that it lasts longer, despite the fact that it probably leads to the comapany selling a bit less cymbals! More people should know about this stuff.

@nicolarighetto3767

Unless the cymbal is very VERY low, such a negative tilt has no real benefit for the drummer
@willgaines5269
@willgaines5269 8 лет назад
Nicola Righetto Actually it keeps the drummer from having to bend their wrists to get a nice, full crash sound. The Meinl dry and dark cymbals are thin and flexible enough to where they won't crack as easily from being struck at a negative angle.

Populism is a way to make an excuse for directioning their cymbals the wrong way..in the video about the making of "higher ground" by Dave Weckl , Weckl mocks Chris Coleman by saying he plays his cymbals in the wrong direction ..well , mark my words all those Coleman fanboys direct their cymbals like him...go ahead and break them , Meinl laughs his ass off!

My buddy is a heavy metal drummer (I'm just a typical rock and jazz drummer), and he was telling me how he hates blowing through cymbals like he does with sticks and heads. When I couldn't relate, I saw that his cymbals had several felts packed in there and the wing nuts were tighter than shit. It also didn't help that he slams his cymbals really hard on the edge. With proper setup and technique, cymbals should last a lifetime.

The "just right" tightening is actually the closest the nut can go but there is not enough felt to make any contact of pressure on the cymbal. Just dumb and makes you hit the edge of the cymbal when striking in quarter or eighth notes.

I dont use felts on the top because i like the cymbal to be as free as possible, but instead of using a metal wingnut i use the tama cm8p plastic screw which goes all the way down to the sleeve so there is no metal contact whatsoever! :)

hey Zildjian? what about the players who enjoy thinner crashes but to play heavier music? I personally have found that thinner cymbals, when hit/mounted properly, last longer than their heavier/thicker counterparts. thoughts?
@dye182
@dye182 7 лет назад
Andrew Konkey I would think it's due to thinner cymbals have more flex/wobble when struck compared to the heavier more brittle cymbals. Zildjian a's for me always have cracked around the bow area where as a harder metal like the zcustom have broke on the edge. That's just my guess?

@ZildjianCompany
@ZildjianCompany 7 лет назад
If you can avoid hitting the cymbal in a way that will damage it, feel free to tilt it any degree you like if it feels more comfortable. For example, some drummers tilt their cymbals away but will still strike the cymbal with proper technique. The tips presented in the video are geared to help raise awareness as to why your cymbals might be breaking and how to reduce the chance of broken cymbals. The tips are not only to help you avoid breakage, but to get the widest range of sound from your cymbals as well.

anika "would do this", & whomever she got the cymbal tilting idea from, but she seems to have them low enough to still hit them at the right angle. & my experience with metal on metal ( especially on threaded metal ) is it makes the cymbal hole wider, which is almost as bad as cracking. almost.

Quick Question, As I've seen before with some gigs I've played in the past, there would be no top felt nor a wing nut at the top. Would this damage cymbals (Normally I wouldn't care but I just got a new expensive cymbal from you guys and now I actually am curious)? Thanks :)
@ZildjianCompany
@ZildjianCompany 7 лет назад
If you're using a rubber sleeve and bottom felt, you will be fine if you aren't using a top wing nut or felt. The top felt is to prevent the cymbal from contacting the wing nut. As long as the cymbal isn't coming into contact with the exposed metal mount above the sleeve, you aren't in danger of keyholing your cymbal. However, we can't say we haven't seen the odd energetic drummer pop a cymbal off the stand that wasn't secured with a wing nut.

Hey, a lot of the time, I see cracks that form in circular arcs half-way or 1/3 of the way out the radius of the cymbal. What causes those? They are fine cracks, often closed, and they are the shape of smiles. Well, frowns would be more appropriate. They tend to wreck the sustain. How can we prevent these, what causes them, and is there any way to repair them? Scrap brass is only $1.40 per lb! :(

I never use a top felt or wing nut on the top of my cymbals... never cracked a cymbal. and glancing to the side is impractical if your actually crashing on your crash, instead of just accenting, or in this case; demonstrating.
@ZildjianCompany
@ZildjianCompany 7 лет назад
Using a top felt mainly protects the cymbal from hitting the wing nut, so if you aren't using a wing nut the felt wouldn't be necessary, although we've seen cymbals pop off the stand if you're a heavy hitter. Glancing may not be the most appropriate motion for every hit and situation, but we are gearing toward getting drummers to not strike down through the cymbal. Recoiling upwards with your hit is as safe as glancing to the side.
@AndrewKonkey
@AndrewKonkey 7 лет назад
Avedis Zildjian Company plus if you slice through your cymbals like I've seen a lot of metal drummers in my circle do, you put too much stress in the outer edge of a cymbal and it cracks a lot easier. I saw a guy that managed to crack a really heavy Z3 19" Rock Crash in the course of one 8-song set, because he mounted his cymbal straight up, ratcheted his cymbal down with 4 felts, and struck on the edge with heavy 2B sticks

What if you play like I do? If you hit the cymbal the right way (the bow) but as soon as you hit it you come right back up. I'm not hiring through the cymbal, but I'm not sliding off the side either.

What can we do about cracks in the middle of cymbals? (like part of the circle cracks)
@ZildjianCompany
@ZildjianCompany 8 лет назад
+Srdjan Devic That type of cracking might happen for a few reasons: 1) You're hitting the cymbal directly on the edge and pushing it into the cymbal stand/tilter 2) You're striking directly on the middle of the bow (when crashing) 3) In very rare cases, there is a defect in the cymbal.

I really never saw a drummer that hits a cymbal on the bow. Only on the edge, but from the top. Is there something wrong with this? I mean hitting on the bow is not much fun...
@ZildjianCompany
@ZildjianCompany 8 лет назад
When we say don't strke the edge, we mean do not strike at the cymbal from the front as illustrated in the video at 1:13. You do want to strike the outer bow on the top as you are saying. It might appear that the stick is striking towards the middle of the bow, but the shoulder is actually striking the outer bow (top edge). Hitting the middle of the bow will not produce a "proper" crash sound and the cymbal will not open up.
