Regarding shipping - I have been playing around with low shipping on some items - and otherwise FREE shipping --- So, in a category where I have several FREE Shipping items - someone recently bought the item at a lower price point - with modest shipping $5ish ---- BUT, I noticed ETSY only shows me as receiving the cost of the item and not the shipping $$ as my profit / total... ??!! So what happens when you do charge shipping - does ETSY take it ? I made the price lower - and added shipping fee, because I thought that was how I would make up my loss on lower price point ?? Thanks in advance for your time -and continual inspiration...
@brenondopp
@brenondopp Год назад
Hi! The money the customer pays for shipping goes to you, but Etsy does take 5% of the total shipping cost as an extra fee. The shipping amount should appear on both your order total and in your payment account, so if you're not seeing it, it may not have been set up correctly or you will need to reach out to Etsy support to see why it's not showing in your account. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

thanks for this video, it's kind of tough to price in canada with conversion from usd to cad alone. Then we have to add taxes into the prices ourselves, so even without adding the shipping cost into the retail price it's already expensive. So offering free shipping while adding shipping cost to original cost seems way too expensive, I create my own designs and I feel bad for what I have to charge. No matter what shipping or no shipping, it's expensive to sell your own print on demand designs as a canadian seller.
@brenondopp
@brenondopp 2 года назад
Hi! Thanks for sharing your insight. If free shipping doesn't work for you, there is no problem charging for shipping. There are many shops that have a lot of success with charging for shipping. Are you using Printful or Printify? Printify is much cheaper, and you can have better margins with them. Also, if you create a design that someone loves, you will be surprised by what someone will pay for it! Best of luck!

If I wanted to do A B testing for a listing WITH shipping, would I need to go back to my products and create a new shipping profile through printify, then select that shipping profile for all the items I want to test? If not, what’s a good way to add shipping to a half of my listings so I can do A B testing to see whether free shipping or with shipping does better for my niche? Just trying to figure out these basics! I appreciate any help! Thanks 🙏

One question nobody has been able to answer me in a year, let's try here. How do we factor in sales tax to how we price our shirts? Income tax I already know, just add the 10% GST to the price (I'm in Australia). However, how does sales tax work?
@imocan59
@imocan59 3 года назад
Great video Brenon, this is so helpful. Do you also add the cost of additional items to your free shipping cost? Thank You!
@brenondopp
@brenondopp 3 года назад
Hi Iris! Thanks for watching! I only charge for additional items on orders where I charge for shipping, like international orders. If you're offering free shipping to the US, you just need to build the shipping cost of the first item into your price point for each product (ie. On Printful, it costs $3.99 to ship a shirt so you'd make sure that cost is built into the overall product cost that your customer is paying). If you set it up this way, you actually make a little bit more when a customer orders more than one product because they are covering the shipping cost for each product already and you have a cheaper shipping cost. For example, if they purchase 2 shirts, they would essentially be paying $8 for shipping while you would only pay Printful $5.25 because the additional item cost is only $1.25 for shirts. I hope this makes sense! If you need more help with this, please let me know.

Thank you so much for this video Brenon, you helped a ton! But could you please clarify if you are paying the total cost ($16.94 +$2.53)? Becuase then you would pay more than the profit that you have received. Thank you so much!
@brenondopp
@brenondopp 2 года назад
Hi Stefanie! Thanks so much for watching! In the video, my total product and shipping costs are $16.94 and my total fees are $2.53, so my overall total cost is $19.47. Since I priced my item at $25.99, the profit that I walk away with is $6.52 ($25.99-$19.47=$6.52). Basically, I pay $19.47 to receive $25.99. I hope this makes sense!

@brenondopp
@brenondopp Год назад
Hi Rakhee! I don't worry about offsite ads because the high majority of Etsy orders come from the Etsy marketplace and not from offsite ads. If you make less than $10K USD on Etsy in the past 365 days, you can actually opt out of them in your settings. If you make more than $10K, they are required. Although the margins are very slim like you said, they can be a good way to increase sales counts and exposure. I initially allowed Etsy to run offsite ads in hopes of converting potential customers into long-term customers and also because I saw value in increasing my sales and reviews in the beginning to add social proof and credibility to my shop. Again, only a handful of sales actually came from offsite ads so I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Personally, really good SEO is the most important thing you can do for your shop. The high majority of my sales have come from ranking well organically in search results on Etsy. Here are more details about offsite ads: etsy.me/3sJHb6D I hope this helps!

Hi Brenon. I'm a little late to the party but I have a question. Customer pays 19.99 plus 4.75 shipping for a shirt and I offer a 30% discount, which brings them to a cost of $18.74. After I get that $18.74 from the customer and pay Printify for the cost of the shirt 11.19, the shipping fee of 4.75, and pay my Etsy fee 2.23, that leaves me with .57 cents profit. However....when I plug in those numbers into this calculator it shows my profit as $5.32. I'm so confused. I assume that it just doesn't calculate out the shipping cost to give a 'true profit.' Is that correct?

Thanks for a great video! Can you do one regarding VAT and sending in other countries? Does etsy charge you the fee or you have to report it yourself, etc.? Do you recommend only selling in the US market to minimize these tax issues?
@brenondopp
@brenondopp 3 года назад
Hi! This is a great video suggestion and I plan on doing it in the near future but I just haven't gotten to it yet! Yes, the easiest solution to avoid VAT or tax issues is to only sell in the US market. VAT definitely can be overwhelming and very confusing. I'm not a legal tax expert, but from my experience and research, I'll try to explain how I understand it. VAT (also known as JCT, GST, SST, or QST in some countries) is a tax based on the consumption of goods and services, similar to sales tax in the U.S. VAT applies more or less to all goods and services that are bought and sold for use or consumption in certain countries. In July, Etsy began collecting VAT on orders to the EU and remitting it to the proper authority. They are already doing this in other countries; here is a link with more information which I highly suggest reading through: etsy.me/38H5BF2 Etsy will collect VAT from your customer (in applicable countries) and Printful will charge YOU a VAT on any Printful order printed in their EU location that is shipped to an EU address because you are using an international facility. It's technically 2 separate transactions. You are buying the goods and services from Printful, and then your customer is buying the product from you, so there are 2 separate VAT fees. The tax percentage varies by country (ie. VAT rate in EU countries range between 17 and 25%, New Zealand's GST rate is 15%, Australia's is 10%, etc.). You can calculate the specific percentage of your product and add it to your shipping price by country, or you can just add $4-5 to international shipping costs, which is what I do. Here's another link with some more good information: help.printful.com/hc/en-us/articles/360014008360-What-is-VAT- Honestly, if it's really stressing you out, you can just stick with selling in the U.S. The HIGH majority of my orders come from the U.S. I only sell internationally because Printful makes it easy with their international facilities, but my main focus is on my customers in the U.S. I hope this helps clear up some of your confusion!
@bellychic8
@bellychic8 3 года назад
@@brenondopp thanks so much! makes total sense. I was just worried that I had to charge my etsy customers the VAT and remit it myself. I just opened my store and it seems difficult to make $5 profit and have to pay Printful for VAT unless I really jack up the price of the shirt. Thanks again!!

Hi Brenon, let's say i offer free shipping, if i built the shipping cost into the product price, let's say i want to sell a shirt at $20, the shipping cost within the US is $5, so, i must set the shirt price at $25., i got it. My question is: that's if the customer is in the US. Shipping costs are different to other countries, for ex: shipping cost can be $ 11.99 to certain countries, if i increase the product price by $5 ( to cover the shipping cost within the US)...it won't work if the customer is from a country with $11.99 shipping cost, i will sell it at lost. So, how do i set up the shirt price, in this case, for customers from other countries? i mean if a customer from Canada clicks on that listing, the shirt price would be shown accordingly, not the same price shown if the customer is from the US. You know what i'm saying, how do i set up the price for each country? Hope you have a video on explaining this or any suggestions?

Now that the seller fee increased, how do we calculate that? I'm terrible at math :(
@brenondopp
@brenondopp 2 года назад
Hi! So sorry for the extremely late reply. Also, this video is made with Printful's pricing so I can see why it's confusing! It's a little tricker with Printify as all of their prices vary per size/color/provider, so you could find the average cost to set up your pricing and then just plan to lose more on higher cost variants and make more on lower cost variants. If you're using the E-rank profit calculator, it will account for all current fees on Etsy (they have updated it since the seller fee increased), which is perfect for people like me and you! Math isn't my forte either 😂 Best of luck!

Hi Nick! I apologize for the delayed response. There could be a handful of reasons of why you might not be making sales. For pricing, if your prices are too low, your customers might not think you are a valid shop, but if they are too high, your competitors might get the sale instead of you. Growing your shop does take time, but if you have high-quality listings with trending designs, this can expedite the process. How many reviews do you have? Reviews are huge when first starting out, especially ones with pictures. Don't be afraid to politely ask your customers to leave reviews when first starting out. Are you doing your trend research? Are you using proven SEO? Are you using high-quality mockups? Do you have all the necessary info on your listings so that the customer doesn't have any questions about the product or when checking out? These are all elements to a high-quality listing. 200 listings is great! Keep listing and you're bound to take off soon. I wish you the best of luck!

I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong. Maybe it’s that I need to use Printful instead of Printify. I am using the ERank calculator. However my Printify price is a lot higher than what you picked up from Printful. I enter 24.99 as what I’m charging my customer and my costs are 21.87 + 8.00 for shipping. If I want to make any profit I will have to charge $40! That is not happening. What am I doing wrong?! I’m new to all of this.

Hi! What product are you selling and which provider are you using on Printify? Also, are you located in the USA? Let me know and hopefully I can better help you!

@@brenondopp Hi! Thank you so much! The one that I’m referring to here is a Gildan 18500 from Monster Digital. Yes, I am in the USA. I am trying to offer free shipping but I think I am going to switch to the Guarantee Free shipping option that Etsy provides in hopes of making it easier until I fully understand the process. I really appreciate your help!

@@brenondopp I also wanted to mention that once I looked at others that were cheaper and charging shipping, it was comparative to my price. With my being new, I wanted to be somewhat cheaper until I am comfortable. I hope this makes sense. My head is spinning 😵‍💫 LOL

Sir, if I put ads on my product whose price is 1$ for a day, then etsy will take that money from me immediately or is there any process?🙏

The amount of your budget that you use is deducted from your Etsy Payment account the following day. If you don't have any money in your Etsy Payment account from sales, Etsy will charge the card you have on file. You only pay when your ads are clicked on. I hope this helps!

This is so dumb to anyone outside of US. It seems in US "Free Shipping" is mandatory by the regional community practices, just like tipping. In Europe, shipping cost in a norm. Everyone knows each item is going to have a shipping cost when they put it into cart. And they accept it, as it makes sense. Only when your order total is expensive will there be a domestic free shipping option (amount depends on the store). Mandatory free shipping is dumb. Tipping in Europe can get you hurt physically, as it's an insult. Honestly, people in US are so uneducated that they are a lost cause in my eyes. It's like watching children do stupid things..

I have been emailing, chatting, calling Etsy back and forth for five days and cannot get a clear definite answer. All I get is unclear info and links to info I don't totally understand. Here are my questions I presented to them. If anyone has any suggestions or anwers please let me know. 1. Can I purchase a SVG design and heat press that design on a t- shirt myself and sell it on Etsy 2. Can I purchase an SVG design, and have Printful place my purchased design on a t shirt for me and sell it on Etsy. 3. Etsy says to list Printiful as an integration using their integration list, problem is when I click on the inegration link they provide, Printrful is not on that list. Etsy also sent this info that I don't totally understand when it relates to Printful. "Etsy sellers may use third parties to ship or fulfill their orders as long as these items meet our policies. For example, if you have your original designs printed by a professional printer in a different location, they can mail your customer the order. However, drop shipping ready-made items you've purchased from a supplier to resell would not meet our Handmade policies." "“Reselling” is selling an item that you, the seller, did not make or design. Etsy's marketplace includes handmade items, vintage items, and craft supplies. Reselling is only allowed in the vintage and craft supplies categories. Everything listed in our Handmade category must be made or designed by you, the seller. Reselling is not allowed in Handmade. Read more in our Handmade Policy. " I know that's a lot to read, but I just wanted to show you what my problem is. Thanks so much!

Hi Barbra! I'm sorry you haven't been able to receive a clear answer from Etsy regarding your questions. If you purchase SVG's off of Etsy, I would recommend adding to them and making them your own instead of selling them as is. Some sellers only give their customers licensing for personal use, so you also need to check the description or message the seller beforehand to make sure your order gives you a commercial use license. Personally though, I wouldn't buy SVG's on Etsy because I've noticed lots of digital download shops are ripping their SVG's off of other sellers, specifically best selling items, so they don't even own the rights to those designs themselves. I share this from experience. Sadly, our shops have had designs stolen and then sold as SVG's. This is a problem because although the seller may state in their listing that you have commercial licensing with your order, the original design's owner could come after you for copyright issues. There are several different design services out there that you could use instead of Etsy, which is what I would recommend. A few that I love are Vexels, Kittl, and Creative Fabrica. These are safe and legal places to purchase designs to sell, but even with these, I would always purchase the design/elements you want and then combine things to make them unique, different and your own. This would allow the design/product to fall into the handmade category. I'm not sure what list you are talking about, but Printful is allowed to be used with your Etsy store. You just need to specify that you are using a production partner on all of your listings. If you are having issues with the integration process, I would message Printful's live chat to receive help. To summarize, you do need to have some part in the creation process in order to sell on Etsy because it is a handmade site. This is why I recommend always creating your own designs from scratch or purchasing some elements with the services I mentioned and then adding to them to make them your own. You are not allowed to dropship already-made products from wholesale sites like AliExpress or Alibaba. You are allowed to heat press and ship your own shirts OR use a print provider to print and ship your items, but in order to avoid any problems with the "handmade" policies, you need to create original designs or use elements with commercial licensing from other resources and add your own touch so that the design is made by you. I hope this helps clear things up for you! I wish you the best of luck! Thanks for watching!
