Here's how I process my vocal tracks using the stock plugins that come with Logic Pro X. The plugins are, in this order:
1. Speech Enhancer (or Izotope Dialog De-noiser) for line/background noise removal
2. EQ
3. Compressor
4. De-Esser (if needed)
5. Adaptive Limiter

Finally someone using a sure beta for podcasts...these mics are underrated to me and have a sweet spot for high gain. They just sound great. Also I would make a preset setting and save as a template so it’s easy to dial in consistently. The best tracking sessions are well planned before your sessions and this helps get you started.

@@aarondowdplaysdrums one question is how to EQ and get the richest male voice while maintaining the correct EQ for a podcast. I understand about removing the bass but I always feel as if I'm taking away too much in order to be podcast friendly.
@NeverHADaNes
@NeverHADaNes 5 лет назад
Hey. Thanks for the advice on the bass. I currently use either an Audio Technica AT2020 or a Rode Procaster through a Scarlett 2i2 into a MacBook pro running Logic Pro X. I have carried out some isolation treatment in the room. There's still a tiny bit of reflection but hardly noticeable when using a dynamic microphone. I've followed your advice in this video and also tweaked the EQ in particular the bass and I've got a nice natural voice. I've always used garageband for podcasting in the past but switched over to logic as I needed more visual meters etc for monitoring loudness. Thanks for the video and added notes.

I appreciate your helpful and clear explanations, Aaron. I have a question however: for my voice over recordings, I don't need much EQ or compression and prefer a natural sound, but am interested in having an excellent processing quality in export (to mp3 or Wav). Do you think that Logic pro X will worth it and be more rewarding that Garageband or Studio one 3 for my use? Thank you for your time and answer.

Hey Aaron, this is very helpful as I edit my first podcast episodes. Something I'm not understanding: when bringing the loudness meter to -16, it then is unaffected by lowering or raising the mixer level. Integrated remains bouncing around -16 while I can bring the mixer level down to almost silent, or at the top peaking, and it still reads -16. I don't understand how this is a clear representation of where the mix volume should be...?

Thank you very much for sharing this interesting configuration, it sounds great; although I have a more modern version of Logic (I see the video in 2020), I have been able to rescue Legacy, very very interesting, really, it eliminates background noise, and I need to know, please: is this setting correct for recording? I mean, is it better to record with any plugin and then put the plugin, or does it matter? Thank you.

Could I send you a sample of the same length and you take a quick crack at it? I have a really nice $300 mic - but I am not getting perfect sound out of it. I would rate my processing at like a 7 or a 8 right now. You can have a listen. Other people say it sounds great, but I know theres a couple more tweaks. Would love your help, even if its out of the norm for you. All in all, yours is better! 😂

This is great thank you so much Aaron! For my podcast I bring in both vocal tracks from the conversation (me and my guest) to logic. Should I be using these processing techniques on each track individually or should do them both at the same time through the master (and how exactly would I go about doing that if so?). Also on your video about adding compression you say to set the peak compression threshold to -12db but in this video you said to set it to -3db. Is there a reason for the discrepancy?

Is it only because of the level of the recording equipment? or we can edit it through Logic Pro X ? Thanks for your time.

What did you do to get the level input so loud? We like the sound when we are about 10cm away from the mic, because we don't want that "radio" sound- but .. on our focusrite clarett 4pre USB we have to push the gain almost to 100% to get around -30db peaks when normally talking; we use 2 RODE procaster microphones. I find it odd that I pay so much for supposedly good preamps and still don't get that much gain; do you use a Mic booster in front or something? Thanks!

I've just taken all of your settings, but it doesn't sound like yours. First of all, your voice sounds much louder. Your waveform in Logic is bigger and I've already turned my gain up on the interface.
@aarondowdplaysdrums
@aarondowdplaysdrums 3 года назад
The first thing you’ll want to do is make sure your input gain levels are correct (loud but not clipping). If you’ve turned the gain knob all the way up on your audio interface and the signal still isn’t high enough, double check your recording software to make sure it isn’t lowering it in any way (some have auto-gain level features). If that isn’t the issue and your audio is still too low, you can add gain to the audio track itself using a plugin. Hope that helps!
