One important thing you forgot is if the tendons have been cooked, they really won't bind. Namely the natural dog chews from a pet store have been dehydrated at a hot temp won't bind. Will work as a backing but not a string.

Good video Kramer. I’m going to back my bow with sinew or rawhide after I put some walnut tip overlays on and recurve the limbs a bit🏹
@HK-mr4rv
@HK-mr4rv 5 лет назад
Kramer Ammons never done it before bro, but it looks pretty easy. I am going to use a plane or a belt sander to flatten out the tips on the back side of the bow. I will sand just through my nock grooves on the back side.Then just glue walnut tips on with tite bond 3, and sand them down to blend in with the limbs.

You generally do a good job at bow making and I normally don't critique other bow channels, but I would caution people wishing to learn sinew backing to learn from people that have experience. Do NOT wet the sinew to "straighten it" after you process it, and it makes for a stronger backing and smoother backing if you don't sort your bundles into the same lengths.

You CAN use bundles that are the same length as long as you stagger the placement so there isn't a continuous seam across the back. But you are right, it's also good to use bundles of different length AND stagger the placement... makes it even stronger.

Hi Krammer (btw I just subscribed) I'm on the selfbow building journey for a few years and stumbled on your wonderful presentations and knowledge. I'm a few steps behind your experience and tools etc but have learned a bit about sinew and horn bows in my deep search and find session of which your part of and I've learned a lot from you. In response to your asking if anyone knew anything I found that I have gotten a bunch of knowledge and just need the time and resources to work on. In the mean time watching this vid I noticed that the sinew you used needs more processing, it's still too thick. From reading and videos I noticed that they had their sinew processed to the point that it looked like threads or hair or even a white messy wig kinda look. That would get soaked in water to a point and then after dipping in glue laid out so that they'd come together much like the cells of the female muscles cells depicted in anatomy books. and the levels on top of the first would have a non overlapping layout and that depending on intention the bow would get from 1 to 7 layers of sinew. I stopped as things got crazy this past year but was on the point of starting to recurve/reflex and sinew back my bows.

Man I love your videos, I’m going to critique!!! Love your enthusiasm, love your self taught n made your own mistakes n share with us. Love that you cover most of beghinnrr questions. Love how I give different options to reduce cost or work needless steps. Having said that I do like that old man who makes long bows n has a channel. I went to dog store n got back straps but hit to hard it all breaks, looks more fragile than leg tendon. Or I was going to cut strips if rawhide and stretch each piece after it’s glued before I lay it down. Would rawhide be a somewhat on par compared to rawhide in your internetional opinion.

I imagine any mammal. We’re all pretty much made of the same stuff. One tall human has enough to back a couple bows. …hypothetically

I dried back sinew till transparent, but when it came to beating it with the hammer, it splittered like glass. Anyone had that problem before?

I really dont have to pound out flat back sinew, just the thick leg tendon stuff. Might try to be more delicate
