@erra1645
@erra1645 Год назад
Possibly - but he explains it clearly enough to get the idea of what he's doing. It's just one audio sample copied and mixed with the original audio sample but on a short delay, or a future copy, spliced with the same audio sample on fade-in, fade-out effects and mono vs. stereo mix-and-match. The technique itself is actually very simple, but it is time consuming and the final product is a complex, multi-layered piece of music. The "money-money-money-money-money" echo also requires proper timing - too short or too long both kill what you're going for. Have to get it right in that sweet spot. I was doing something similiar to this back in high school when I was using Audacity and tried to create a spliced together version of all the different bands that had made a cover for "Enjoy The Silence" but it was obviously more simplistic and with nowhere near the same level of time dedication to it as I suspect Devin does.

I love his approach. The sub-mixing allows him to stop wasting time on rethinking every decision. You commit early to the first sound that sounded good and you focus on the big picture all the time. Brilliant way to keep your eyes (and ears) on the prize. Fast decision making is a major key to success in any field, and here too.

It is so cool to see that this kind of submixing routine is something someone as cool as DT uses (and uses well). I am a laptop guy too, and rely a lot on submixing just to keep things manageable. At the end, if something isn't quite right...I go back to one of about 18 sessions and create a better submix. In a cafe. On my laptop. :)

Honestly, very little. When it comes to good orchestration, you're already doing things like eq, delay, compression, reverb, automation etc. The only difference is these aren't plugins, rather they're specific instructions to the player on how to achieve the final sound. Mozart didn't need EQ, because he knew how to blend instruments and control the sound. If he wanted a part to be fuller or doubled, he wouldn't use delay, he'd just get another player to play in unison, or the same part in canon (to play the same thing against itself, whilst offset). If he wanted to hide the attack transients of a note, he'd write swells. You don't need to add reverb since you'll be playing in a large hall to begin with. You don't need to double track parts since if you're Mozart you have 100 piece orchestras at your disposal. You don't need automation since the score tells the player what to play and how, they do it all live. Even more advanced production techniques such as sidechain compression are possible with a live orchestra, as demonstrated by David Bruce.

The big problem I have is as a musician is I intuitively want to just layer zillions of instruments. And it just starts getting muddy. I've realised some of it is mic/room junk so having a robust high pass solves that, but I get a lot of build up in the mids and then I'm stuck with this awful dilema where lots of the transients are on top of each other, and if I want definition, I have to pick which of my babies to define. Though I've found sidechaining dynamic eq helps a lot cos those transients arent always EXACTLY on top of each other as long as I'm not nailing things to the grid, something I prefer not to do anyway.
