I can't thank you enough for publishing this wonderful, clear video. In less than 15 minutes, using your method, I produced an image that has been eluding me for two months!
So well explained and more new ideas for myself to try like levels/curses colour channels . I feel the real important aspect shown was how it's best to start with a well edited colour image first , and even to overcook it a little before going to B+W I have always thought , even in the darkroom that it's harder to make a good Black and white photo as there are far more varying possible "good" photos ; and that's before toning is considered . I am getting lots of ideas to explore from your Affinity videos ; thank you
Thank you. I'm glad that you like the video and ideas.

Very elegant and easy to use method! At the top I added a Brigtness and Contrast adjustment, and a Levels adjustment for setting the Black and White point. My test photo needed that. Very pleased with the result I got editing for just a few minutes :) Thanks Robin for another great tutorial!
I'm glad you liked it. I also use the same approach with Nik Solver Efex Pro. As flexible as that plugin is, you can often improve by breaking down the conversion into regions.
Glad you liked it and no, I didn't use a mask on the second layer. There's no need as the layer doesn't affect the area that's already converted to black and white.
I've used multiple B&W layers before but never considered using the levels(or curves) to modify the colours of the original. Nice tip. Although normally I'd just go into Silver Efex and use some control points! But the levels/curves idea might work there too, I must try it out...
That's great to hear. Not many people use multiple conversion layers. The Levels and Curves "trick" can make a noticeable difference and it's well worth trying.
Great video, but Luminar Neo is just so much easier to use. I can never get all these layers and masks straight in my head. I try to use both programs but find Affinity just so hard to understand. Thanks for your great videos Robin.
Yes, Affinity Photo isn't for everyone and different people find different tools easier than others. I also like Luminar Neo but tend to use it more as a plugin for effects.
Glad it was helpful. If you find the video too fast paced, turn off the sound and turn on the subtitles in the RU-vid player. You can then slow the replay down to 50%.
Thanks for your tutorial Robin. I shall attempt this with Photoshop, but I am not sure where the second BW layer should go; I assume is should go below the masked layer, but I will explore this fully. Thank you!
Sorry, I don't know. Most of the iPad versions of editors like Photoshop and Affinity Photo have a black and white conversion filter and allow you to do what I did in the video but I can't tell you which one is best. They all seem similar in terms of black and white conversion features.
No, you can't access individual colour channels in RAW unless you mean apply a black and white conversion in RAW. That is possible and it has colour response sliders to make different colours lighter and darker, but they aren't colour channels.
The resolution of the image shouldn't change. The pixel dimension and the pixel density are the same. Are you meaning the colour channel data that's "thrown away" by the conversion?
You missed one important thing about conversion. It is important for people to understand the foundations. Make a video talking about the black and white formula.
This is a video about how to use the tools and achieve better results. I’ll leave the question of what's "better" to the individual to decide for themselves.
@@RobinWhalley exactly how to use the tools to achieve better results. So they need the formula. If you teach something to someone and don’t explain foundational techniques then that’s where people falter and we see bad work all over the place. I didn’t say better. I said explain the black and white conversion formula.
