Do you ever get frustrated that you don’t own the virtual instruments that you know will make the ultimate difference to your music production?
I understand your frustration but I’m also here to let you know that you don’t need premium plugins or virtual instruments to create great music.
Almost every DAW these days comes with an inbuilt VST instrument that is very often overlooked. While Kontakt, Omnisphere, Sylenth, Massive and similar premium instruments are amazing in their own right, you can still create incredible sounds and music with the instruments you already have at your disposal within your DAW.
AIR Music Technology’s Xpand2! comes bundled with Pro Tools and I decided to create a video mini-series on how powerful a tool this instrument really is.
You don’t need Pro Tools or Xpand2! to follow along because the concepts can be applied to any DAW or stock instrument you might own.
The first video in the series is all about creating a drum beat so…
Let’s dive right in!

I completely agree with the setiment of this video. I'm new to DAWS in general, and I downloaded the trial version of Studio One and created a great sounding song, using only the plugins from the Studio One (including the arpeggiator). Then, once my trial had expired I was only really left with Presence and a handful of effects, and no arpeggiator. And because I hadn't recorded my MIDI to audio files, I had to 're-work' the entire song with the those remaining plugins. And, actually, it finished up sounding really good. And since then, that's all I've been using to create tracks (until a few weeks ago, when I got myself an M-Audio CTRL49, which comes with loads of AIR VSTs and Ableton Live Lite). So, my moral here is that not having a whole myriad of pricey VSTs actually helped me focus on getting the best out of what I had and really learning to mix well. Now, I can move forward with some new VSTs and maybe get a proper version of Studio One - but I'll still be using Presence!

for fl studio you have to buy the xpand2 plugin so its a little bit more expensive.

and also this is not exactly a stock plugin by any means. This is a premium plugin that happens to ship with pro tools. This thing still goes for 120 bucks and sometimes its on sale for 20 or even 1 buck but dont let that fool you, this is a full on premium plugin. Many people overlook AIR plugins for whatever reason.

Now I am going to explore with xpand!2 and reconsider! although I think in terms of workflow it's a bit easier to have a hardware like the maschine.. what do you think?

Thanks for subscribing! I am not currently a Pro Tools First user but I can see Xpand!2 comes with it, so you'll be able to trigger loops and MIDI instruments from that. Once you get a MIDI controller set up, you should have no issues. Hope that helps!

I don't have the top menu toolbar either. In the 4 rectangular boxes on the left marked A, B, C, D in each box to the far right there is a tiny arrow. Top right in each box. If you click it you will get the same menu he got when he found the loops. Underneath the tiny arrow is a double arrow that should help you navigate through whatever menu you chose with the top arrow. Well, finding that out helped me, so I thought I'd share.
