been watching a ton on DMX lighting stuff and a lot of reading, but your video just really nailed down the most important stuff in under 20 minutes. Thank you!
I had the honor of working with Ken Vannice, one of the original pioneers of the DMX lighting protocol. He was one of the smartest people I had the fortune to learn from. RIP Ken.
Def had that "aha" moment, this is the video that RU-vid suggested when I searched for "dmx for idiots" super clear instructions. Voice isn't annoying, didnt say "uhm" 132 times, 10/10 would recommend.
I clicked on this video thinking I would learn enough info to be satisfied and say I know what dmx is but you just told me what I wanted to do when I learned what dmx was. Thxs
A really useful video (as are most of your videos). I've been scratching my head over DMX programming for a couple of years but now I think I'll be able to crack it.
Awesome video Scott. As a sound guy that has been plunged into the world of lights, your video has saved my life! I'm using a Mantra console and the manual just confused the heck out of me. Now I see the light!! 😅 Thank you so much 👍🎸
Well you certainly cleared up a few things for me. I spent hours this past week beating my head against the wall. I was trying to use the Chauvet C-4 Foot controller with 6 Par64 LED’s. We finally just got them all to go on 1 color and then gave up. Pretty boring light show! I bought the C-4 foot controller so I could run the lighting from the stage while playing guitar. All of the directions that come with everything these days is pretty much crap. Thanks for this video!!
Newbie here. Excellent help. Got me started with my lights, and will check out other vids. Feedback. When describing DMX having 512 channels, it might help to describe what a channel is.. or maybe that is for a more advanced tutorial. Love your work.
Thank you for this video. I have been watching many different videos on the subject of DMX lighting with glazed eyes, and while watching yours I just had my aha moment. Great video.
Great job Scott! I've been a professional musician since 1982, but only now getting into lights. (I've always had people for that. LOL) This video is well done and you explain how to set up DMX in a simple to understand way. Thank you so much!
I started Djing this year in Jan at a local club that just opened. They had all the lights, all the clamps, bars, stands. However the gentlemen that owned these, did not know how to operate DMX. Insert me haha, an extremely dilligent musician that always tries to find creative ways to get the best out of anything ;) Thanks for the tips here. Really expands my perspectives and helps mitigate questions.
im new to lighting but what i know from the audio side is using xlr instead of a dmx cable can lead to data loss, and depending on the light, can cause it to act unpredictable.. not always, but sometimes. dmx is 110 Ω and xlr is 45-75 Ω so theres a difference in resistance between the two cables that may or may not mess with your show
Lol I like how you let everyone know that hitting the like is a free way to support your video... That was 🔥. I'm definitely smashing the like button keep spreading the knowledge man👏👏👏
Great video. Very informational. You got a great presence and ease of understanding you and basically the simplicity of explaining it all . Thank you for that. I will watch this video several times and work on my programming of lights.. I have two 4 can chauvet led lights ..and was wondering is there any particular DMX CONTROL PANELthat you would recommend to using and controlling both sets of lights ? Thank you in advance for any insight on that .☘️👍
Thanks! Glad it was helpful. And I don’t really have any gear recommendations for controlling them. I usually do it digitally. But I have an ADJ controller I use in this video that I do like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Xm7Rep90Is.htmlsi=qSd2A_VjERO66-qG
Thanks for the info! I was needing to save my DMX address in my lights to be on channel 1 for every light, so that when I turn the lights on I don’t have to manually change the channels every time…how do you do that?
Hey Scott, great video as always! Quick question: Would you recommend doing something like this if you didn't own the lights? Like for example if I wanted to program a venue's lights (in my hometown) to run on midi from my laptop. Assume that I could access all the lights and set them up to the channels I want... What would happen if I then wanted to give the access back to the venues lighting controller for the other bands to have a "standard" lightshow that same night (after our set) ? Would I have to reset all the channels on the lights, or? Like I said, the question is "WOULD it even be a good idea"? I would really like to try and make a show with midi programmed lights in my hometown without buying lights for my band. Thanks in advance!
Definitely better to have the lights, but I DID do that for a friends band though once. I didn’t have access to one of the lights so I had to just go from memory and visualize it as I programmed it. And it worked! And yes, lights would have to be rest from show to show to match your DMX addresses you programmed to 👍
Hey Scott. Thank you for the step by step on programming. This helps tremendously being that I just purchased a $1,000.00 worth of Venue products from Guitar Center in Las Vegas Nevada and not a single employee knows how to set up this product. Their advice was to go on You Tube and learn how to set it up. That was a real shocker to hear. And here I am. Still not too clear on the programming with the Venue Tetra Bar Linear Strip Wash Light with four color zones. My question is Do I set up each bar separately as you did in the video? I have four bars. Or do I do that through the Venue Tetra Controller? Or does the controller simply just run what I preset into each bar? Thank you for your help. Art from Vegas
You’ll have to look into the manual on how your lights respond to DMX signal. If you want multiple lights to react the SAME, then set them to the same starting address. If you want them to act differently, set them to a different starting address 👍
The DMX vs XLR cable issue is the same problem with using 1/4 jacks made for guitars on a speaker. Sure it's not going to malfunction right off the bat but most people get into problems when they buy the cheapest cords they can. And cheap xlr can be OK for voices but the dmx signal needs a little more consistent signal which is why sometimes you start getting blinking lights
Yup! These things are awesome. I use them for stage lights, ambient lights, as well as the lights behind me while I’m filming my RU-vid videos now. Super useful 🤘
funny how familiar faces appear... :) - ive got a hand full of LED before they are branded, had a buddy get me some from warehouse before they hit stores if that makes sense, so super affordable, but does the job. Also picked up a LED bar on black friday here last year, game changer that! All the best man!
Hi Scott. Newbie here. Do the wireless dmx adaptors work with any/every dmx controller or is there a specific feature the controller must have for the adaptor to work with it.
Thanks for the video. I'm a total beginner but this made sense. Another question though. I have a lightbar with 4 lights on it. The bar has one display so I cannot set individual addresses for the lights, only 1 address. Can I still program the individual lights with different colours? How does that work?
very informative, but how did you interface the lights with the program/how do I? I have the budget to get some lighting but I'm not sure the best way to control them
@@ScottUhlMusic Yeah it looks pretty user friendly, but I agree I just can't do subscription based stuff, unless it's RU-vid haha. I am looking into Lighting Buddy or Stage Buddy whatever it's called now. It's made by enntec/dmxis
Hey Scott! Do you have any suggestions for a level up from these lights? I have legit the exact same set up as you with the EZPAR 64. DMXIS, etc. But I feel like my lights seem dinky as hell on bigger stages and I can't find a solid resource on what the next level up from Slimpar or EZpar 64 is. Let me know if you know brother, thanks again for the video as always.
Yeah man these are for smaller stages or theaters for sure. Stuff by Elation is supposed to be really nice but they are definitely more expensive. Check out their stuff 🤘
Thanks for your video. I'm a newbie. What do I do with all those other menu items on my fixture? I have a wash light, that when I lose connection to my DMX software, starts strobing green. Very annoying when it happens in the middle of our worship service and our preacher looks like a green monster. I want it to be off, or at least remain where I have it set, if I lose connection. Thanks for any help.
@@ScottUhlMusic any recommendations on a similar product? I love how simple the software interface looks as a physical controller somewhat scares me as a beginner
What would be the best way way to trigger a light to be a silent metronome on stage that the whole band can see? Not the whole song, just for four or so measure to nail the count in
I know, it’s a shame for sure. I need to find another one. enttec switched to a subscription model which is insanely annoying so I’m looking into other options.
Yes you absolutely can inter mix brands with DMX commands, but not with slave mode. Slave is for similar units, but you can daisy chain DMX cables to any mix of brands 👍
@@ScottUhlMusic THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING. i am new at this . im using an obey 40 to try and make a slim par 64 and a eyourlife par 54 work the same way. the problem is, slider 1 is red for the par 64 but not for the eyourlife54. slider 5 makes it red. so im sending conflicting info to both lights . what am i doing wrong??
I think your friend Mike thought I was laughing at him on your comment where you said "uh oh... Mike it here... prepare to answer questions." He just said "I won't be laughed at. unsubscribed." and deleted his comment. :/ If you see him again, can you let him know I was laughing at your comment? Not at him. Thanks
Hi Scott - I'm lost with my Moving Head Light Setup: 60w, DMX 512 Controller, Programming Instruction for a DJ & Party next month - I was wondering if you could help me with the setup and eventually working lights with a dmx console DMX192 I have 2 LS10 Turning Heads lights with a DMX192 console which I spent multiple days and hours trying to figure out the settings to have them working accordingly - Watching your videos and more I wasn't able to make the lights with the console communicate or work together - I set up both LS10 to Addr: A1 - CHad: 9CH - Slnd: SL1(DMX Mode) - SHnd:LH0 - Sound off - when I go to program DMX console for CH 1 - the lights dont move from the console - frustrating as you explained it very well any idea what i can do ? thanks in advance Matt
It can be frustrating for sure. You have to go through a manual to make sure they are setup properly, and there often is some sub menu that has one setting that needs to be fixed that solves all of your problems lol. That’s what I’ve found anyways
Hi, Scott. Great video. Very usefull. When I turn off my par led and turn on again, it doesn't keep the setup. For example, I put it on D017, turn off, turn on and it's on R255. So I have to setup again. It's annoying because sometimes the spot is fixed high on the stage. Do you know how to make the par led keep the last setup before be turned off?
