In this video Anthony breakdown the synth bass in"Igor's Theme" from Tyler, The Creators IGOR.
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

As a zoomer it’s surreal to watch tutorials from guys who worked on Thriller… it’s such a privilege so I just want to say thanks for all you do!

Thank you so much for putting these tutorials up on RU-vid! Thriller was my favorite album in elementary school, so to have the person that actually created the sounds explain how to recreate them is mind-blowing! I play keys in a Top 40 cover band, so I deeply appreciate the attention to detail you provide with your methodology. I can’t get enough of these! Thank you thank you thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️

What's funny is this is basically the init patch for the Elektron Syntakt's dual VCO machine. I turned on the syntakt to learn along with the tutorial and found I had to do nothing but double up for stereo.

main synths I think Tyler used on Igor were the Juno 6 and a Model D Minimoog reissue, although I think he uses omnisphere the most. He has a JX-8P but I don't think he's messed around with programming it and has mainly used the string presets like on Cherry Bomb and Flowerboy. My theory on the Igor's theme bass is spit 50/50 on it being either a minimoog or some Omnisphere thing.

i used serum and i actually got close from the phasing using vectorscope and the stereos from bass to highs and the wave sound, i could show rn but im basically recreating the whole trying to get ss close i could get. I also noticed at the last part of the song the sound changes to elevate the climax

Yes dude! The ability to "make the sounds that are in my head" is what lead me down the sound design/synth journey to begin with. Its so much more efficient both with the amount of time it takes to create something but also for workflow. Nothing kills creative juices more than having to "find" the right sound. After about 4-5 years now of mostly self teaching I am finally to the point where if I have a sound in mind 9/10 times I can produce that sound quick enough to not lose my idea. If anybody is reading this I promise you it is worth the effort!

Love the way you talk through the whole thing. Perhaps you could get Tyler on for an episode, he's got a nice synth collection and can be seen playing them in some studio clips. Could probably go over some of the other tunes off his albums.

These are awesome Anthony - love your philosophy.... ICONIC SONG > ICONIC SOUND - the school of quincy ! Here is a wishlist of some iconic sounds IN iconic songs that I think would make great videos Kanye West : "On Sight" (this one would b extra cool, lots of extended technique here!), "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1", "Feeback" - Playboi Carti "Location" - Daft Punk "Night Vision", "Voyager" - Radiohead "Kid A" (the second song on Kid A, "Like Spinning Plates"

Great series, nice to hear these vintage gems keep up with modern times! That unison bass rips hard, will have to try dialling in that patch on my Rev4. By the way, what rev P5 is this one? And was the P5 used much on Thriller? Seems like its always the JP-8, CS-80, ARP & Mini that get all the credit.

Love how you dial that tone in so perfectly wow! Do you have any recommendations on current synths that you would recommend Anthony? I was looking to invest in my first synth between a Juno X or a Yamaha MODX 6 (which doesn’t allow you to tune oscillators manually)

I’m a sucker for those biiig detuned saw basses, ngl. I first learned to play music on a sax (which IIRC is just-intonated for its natural key?) along with my teachers’ old European 435Hz-A pianos. Everything was pretty detuned in those lessons no matter what! So that kind of synth bass with the foundations kicked out from under it, which you mention avoiding, is a kind of a nostalgic sound for me as a result, heh. Plus it sounds phat!

Hi Anthony , EXCELLENT documentary , yet again! I had very little money as a Med Student and so I had to improvise a lot. With my pseudo duo-phonic Teisco 110F I would have slightly de tuned the oscillators and borrowed my colleagues octave divider. Would this work? The Pro 5 oscillators are more raw than the Jupe , maybe more harmonics in the Pro saw waveform ? I used pedals a lot to enhance sounds such as a small stone ,Front line delay , front line chorus. To alter the sounds I would send and feed back the signal into the pedal which would ,for example ,change the small stone from a phaser to a flanger and in the front line chorus fatten the chorus effect, what do you think?

Hi Anthony, totally off topic but just found out you did the synthesisers on the sound track for a 1986 movie called streets of gold ? Would you happen to still have a copy of this track ?? I have been searching for years for a copy and can’t source one from anywhere! Thank you for taking the time to read this

I'm all for anything you do on here. You re on the right track. Two things, PLEASE stay away from the Gear Review trap for content. It can tarnish integrity by risking selling out. And have you ever thought of live streaming you producing your own music using analog gear? The space is flooded with DAW based productions. Watching you is great to learn synthesis because of your wizardry. Like an TR808 come to life.
