What about the "un" sound? Most textbook etc. say that it is pronounced it's own particular way but it always sounds the same as "ain" when I hear French people say it.
@kevinbarreau9672
@kevinbarreau9672 7 лет назад
As I was saying to another person, the "un" and the "ain" are pronounced exactly the same way for a native French speaker ! Don't bother to try to make a difference between the two because there isn't ^^ And French people will understand you just fine
@kevinbarreau9672
@kevinbarreau9672 7 лет назад
***** Yeah I think you're right about the Quebec pronunciation for UN vs IN but in Belgium though, it's quite the same as in France !

@@kevinbarreau9672 oh my god thank god you cleared that up, i was worried about that too. I could always do 'un', and 'pain' , never thought there was a difference until i saw this video, but hey you cleared that up. Cheers!

Thank you! My problem is, I hear (or think I hear) many people pronouncing this sound as the 'an' in 'blanc'. That is, 'pain' and 'paon' sound exactly alike. Is this just a particular accent? Also 'main', which most people seem to say like 'ment', at least to my ear.
@kevinbarreau9672
@kevinbarreau9672 7 лет назад
Actually, the people who live in the South part of France tend to replace the "an" sound with an "ain" sound. That's only cultural and proper to the region where they live ^^
@ubizmo
@ubizmo 7 лет назад
As another example, when I've heard 'train' spoken, it sounds more like 'trente', although of course 'trente' isn't nasal and has the 't'. But 'train' is another example of a word not sounding the way I expect it to sound, when I hear it spoken.

I still keep hearing im as am... "Ah" and when I try to make the different sounds, it unfortunately sounds the same to me... I speak Portuguese I know how to make nasal sounds but how do I do the different sounds? Are my lips suppose to be rounded or different?

In International phonetic alphabet, this particular sound is written as [ɛ̃], but to me, it really sounds [ã]. What is your opinion? P.S.- I'm a Bengali speaker. Bengali has both of these [ɛ̃] and [ã] sounds. So I can pronounce them differently as phonemes. But this 'ain' sound doesn't seem to me as [ɛ̃] (according to IPA), as I can spot the difference.
