This great, thanks. If the double cc and gg have no effect on the pronunciation, is there some other reason they are used?
@teacherstefano
@teacherstefano 3 года назад
Ciao! That is a very good question! Double letters are very common in Italian and if you’re interested I might make a whole video about it. Double letters are pronounced a bit harder than single letters and they do have an effect on the pronunciation of words, but not the single sound of Cs and Gs. The difference in pronunciation is very subtle and tricky! The whole pronunciation of the word changes, but not the pronunciation of the single letters themselves. Sometimes, they also change the meaning of words. For instance, “ecco” means “here”, but “eco” means “echo”. These two words, though, both have a hard C sound. Or “palla” means ball, but “pala” means “shovel”. I hope this helps :)

Would it be correct to say that Italian has no use for: 1. Words that are spelled as: cha, cho, chu. 2. Pronunciation that in other languages like Spanish sound like cha, cho, chu. Thank you Stefano. You are making this enjoyable! You are exemplary organized and clear.

My last name is Geraci. We pronounce it with g /j/ and ci as /see/. How would it be pronounced in Italian?
@teacherstefano

Is "c" as in "ca" pronunced "k" or "g"? I watched another video on RU-vid and it says it should be pronunced as "g". So which one is correct ?
@teacherstefano
@teacherstefano 3 года назад
“C” in “ca”, “co”, “cu” and “chi”, “che” is pronounced as a “k”. Whoever says it’s a “g” sound is terribly wrong.

Soft, for example: 'Gli uomini' (The men)

It would have been a lot better and easier if you explain how to pronounce the c in all forms separately from all forms of g, and not lumping them together. This way you don't miss out on sch or scc sounds
