@sunshine112228 Basically, just don't stop the sound. In a next word that begins with a vowel, like "or another", this might be easier than when the next word is a consonant. Look for it in this video, "er-wait" for "or wait".

I have been wondering for so long why "or" was written in IPA with the same vowel sound as "law." To me it just didn't sound the same. Thank you for the video. It was very helpful!

Could you explain these pronunciations: [twoni] for twenty and [underSHtand] for underStand (slang, accent, speech impediment?)
@salroja
@salroja 8 лет назад
it's hard when the "or" comes after a word that ends with "r", like the phrase "whether or not". Seems there's no extra syllable at all, it's more like you slightly enlarge the "r" sound: "whetherr not". Is it right?

Do you have a video showing the difference between the "or/ore/oar" sound at the end of a word vs. an "aw" sound (such as the difference between "lore" and "law"). I am asking because there was a question on an onomastics forum where a poster asked how to pronounce the name Lorna. Was it "LORE-na" or "LAW-na"? The responses from posters from non-rhotic regions (eg England, Australia, etc) were confused, as to them "lore" and "law" sound exactly the same. To me, as an American with a rhotic accent, they are very much different. I'm having troubles finding a video to help illustrate this difference to those who generally only hear non-rhotic accents. Thank you!

Rachel, I found in Ted's Talking, few people use reduction for "or". Does it mean we just constrain to use the reduction in daily conversations?
@rachelsenglish
@rachelsenglish 4 года назад
Hi! I think that you're right - lots of TED Talk presenters may pronounce the word OR quite clearly because they are in a more formal setting. It really just depends on the speaker and the context. You can definitely use the reduction in daily conversations (and even in formal situations, though you may not hear that as often).
