This is one of the languages I want to learn. As a native English speaker, the clicks are intimidating, but they are also so cool sounding. Thank you for sharing this! It was a very informative and well done video.

I learned that there are 5 variations of the kind of click mentioned in the video. There's the basic kind, the aspirated kind, the glottalized kind, the nasalised kind and the vocalized kind. I like to hear someone articulating the different variations of the click.
@siphesihlesoyizwapi6128
@siphesihlesoyizwapi6128 Год назад
Basic = x (eg. Ixoxo. A frog) Aspirated = xh (eg. IsiXhosa) Nasalised = ngx (eg. Ingxaki. A problem) Glottalised = nx (eg. Nxa! An exclamation showing annoyance) Vocalised = gx (eg. Igxagxa.)

@QuiteAWhiteOu
@QuiteAWhiteOu 9 лет назад
Hi, its actually just a demo video so it would usually follow the videos which do that for you. Start by exhaling the 5 vowels a e i o u, then start to do a click, followed by an exhaled vowel, in that order. Have a gap between the two at first, but slowly reduce the gap so that the click is followed by the exhaled vowel. We have some videos on this somewhere. I think try Craig Charnock Tedx Talk for general interest and a section where the crowd learns a little.

To Ho Very late reply but I think it's because you start to articulate the vowel preemptively and depending on which vowel it is, the tongue changes position, modifying the space in the oral cavity, thus changing how the click resonates within it

I find the click itself easy, actually! But following it with a vowel is a completely different matter though. Interestingly enough it's a sound that's used in my area, but it has nothing to do with the language itself. We use very similar sounding clicking either two times in succession or a bunch of times to attract the attention of cats!

We called this "Sucking your teeth" as kids. I'm just now realizing, from this video, it's the same motion, just adding vowels to it! It's something you did in exasperation or annoyance at someone else, where for Xhosa language, it's just a regular speech sound. Edit: My dog looking at me funny, while I'm trying to practice outloud, also made me realize it's close to the clicking sound you'd make when calling a dog. I can't whistle, so I always did clicks instead. I'm only sharing cause it might help someone else realize the shape and position of their tongue needed to make Xhosa click :)

I am a student of phonetics and phonology, and to me the main issue here is that in order to reproduce the click, you are required to do a brief air suction. That is impossible to conjugate with the pronunciation of a vowel, which requires that you exhale, so there will always be a gap between the X and the vowel. I've been trying to reduce that gap through practice, but no matter how many times I do it, there's always a noticeable interruption of air flow mid way. Any tips?
@TheBlkQueen
@TheBlkQueen 6 лет назад
When i do it, I'm able to inhale and exhale with no gap. I was able to do it well by practicing for a little under 5 minutes xD I'm just putting my tongue on the top of my mouth. Not all the way up front, but just in between the the flat and rigid area. Then i pull back my tongue quickly with a slight suction. I think that's the best way i can explain.
