What is the Chinese Yuan? Word meaning, dictionary definition, explanation, information.
The renminbi is the official currency of China and one of the world's reserve currencies. The yuan is the basic unit of the renminbi, but the word is also used to refer to the Chinese currency generally, especially in international contexts. Thanks for getting the sound right, man! For our English speaking friends who are unfamiliar with the ü syllable, I advise trying to say "wren" to try and ease into the sound. If you can't do "ü", the "wr" consonant achieves an almost acceptable effect.

I will use this to explain to international accounting students that the pronunciations of Japanese "Yen" and Chinese "Yuan" are similar. The main difference appears to be the beginning y vs. ü sound. For practice, say yes a few times for the ye sound in Yen, then say über for the yu sound in Yuan. Good audio with this video. Thank you.
@DeflatorMouse
@DeflatorMouse 2 года назад
Actually, the "ye" in "yen" is hardly pronounced in Japanese, so it is closer to "en" for an English speaker.

Thanks for helping me correct my mispronunciation. I was reading an article in the WSJ that discussed several currencies and that I had no idea of the correct pronunciation. Easy to understand using the phonetic approach.

Hi Julien, Thank you for making these videos to teach people how to pronounance different languages. It is a great work to contribute to cultural communications and to let your audiances to know more about other culture. I admire it and want to help you to make it better. As an native Chinese speaker whose name is also Yuan, I would say the pronunciation you said is incorrect in this video is actually the correct pronunciation. It is not "en" but "an" like "ant." Hope this is helpful.

This was really great and really well done!..... and also concise while clear and very easy to understand.......and is also a far easier way for an English speaker to navigate the phonetic differences often lost in translation! Thanks Julien :)

blame the dementia president all you like, but no president can stop the economic growth of china. from 11% of US GDP in 1998 to 75% in 2022. by 2030 they'll have surpassed us and the eurodollar will be a secondary global currency. been a long time coming. republicans will be elected, democrats will be elected, doesn't change a thing. trade wars will only give China the ability to seek out alternatives to the US, giving them an even easier pathway to burying our economic dominance worldwide
