This post shows you How to Propagate Comfrey Symphytum Bocking 4 & 14. It’s as simple as digging up a few root cuttings about two inches long and putting them in the ground. I’m propagating Bocking 4 and 14, which are the kinds that do not propagate via seen and have to be propagated via root cuttings.
About Comfrey
First, a little information about comfrey. Comfrey, Symphytum, is a perennial herb that grows leaves two to three feet tall and has bell shaped flowers. It is originally from Europe and now grows in temperate climates around the world. It is a member of the borage family and has a tap root that is ten feet long or longer.
Dynamic Accumulator
Comfrey is a dynamic accumulator meaning that it mines and collects a number of nutrients that other plants can’t get to. Comfrey does this with a very long tap root by mining nutrients from very deep down that are out of reach for other plants. The nutrients are then brought up to the top and stored in the leaves. The leaves are used as fertilizer for other plants and is a high source of nitrogen and potassium. The potassium is beneficial to any flowering and fruit bearing tree.
The Propagation Process
The process of propagating comfrey is very easy. Just take a shovel and cut some of the root off. Separate the individual root strands and then cut each of those into two inch sections. Once the roots are cut into two inch sections, then plant them in soil about one-inch deep and water.
Sprouts
The first root cutting will usually pop out of the ground in a week or two. Some of the later ones will take months and possibly go into the next year before the send up leaves. When I first planted mine, I thought that I had lost most. By the following year, I found out that almost all survived, they were just slow emerging.

Interesting! 🤓 Comfrey is all you say but, like the Goose that lays golden eggs, it still needs feeding and care. Do that and you will get tenfold back! 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

I saw a video where the person added chopped Comfrey to a bucket of water and let it soak.. basically made a huge batch of tea to use as fertilizer.. my question is does anyone know if this fertilizer is geared more towards the Veg stage of the plant growth cycle or the Fruiting stage? Im looking to make homemade liquid fertilizer for hydroponics and would like to know recipes to make for both plant stages.
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 года назад
I use it in my vegetable garden and on fruiting trees. I'm no expert in what is best for certain stages, I just like adding nutrients of a dynamic accumulator to all the plants I plan on consuming.

We have White Top Hoary Cress as an invasive here in Utah. I've seen Comfrey used as a rhizome barrier for other weeds, I'm wondering if it would work for Hoary Cress?
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms Год назад
I'm not familiar with hoary cress so I just looked it up. It does look rather invasive. To you question, Comfrey may help contain hoary cress, but it is really anyones guess which one would out compete the other until someone tries it. Just be aware that some comfrey can become invasive as well. If you need to control the comfrey, make sure you get the Bocking 4 or 14 variety.
@anneisom8432
@anneisom8432 Год назад
@@greatescapefarms I've decided to give it a try as my only other options are to use poison. So far, we've been able to keep it managed by pulling it up, but that is A LOT of weed pulling! I'll report back!

Great info. Looking forward to having many of these plants. Ordered Bocking 14, planted 8 right away(04-08), 6 in pots and 2 I just threw in the ground to see what would happen. Kept 7 more in the fridge for 4 days, soaked them for 4(forgot to do this with the first batch) hours and planted 7 more pots(04-12). It's now 04-18 and two of the first batch I planted, and one of the second batch, has sprouted, one of the first ones being about 6 inches tall, so probably sprouted a day or two ago. The instructions said 4" deep so I think that's the only difference and couldn't imagine that making them grow faster. Did I make some super soil, or what?

This is such a great video! One of the best! Question hi...I got some comfry root for a poultice and a salve. Is it too late to plant the root on the ground since it has been 3 days? Or can I still plant the root?
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 года назад
I'm sure the reply is too late for you, but hopefully someone else can use it. A comfrey root that has been out of the ground for 3 days will likely grow just fine. I've ordered them online before and received the roots via regular mail. I then take them out of the package, cut the root into about 2" pieces (just so I get more plants) put them in the ground and end up with a high success rate of the plants growing.

I find it confusing when told that you cannot start it from seed, the bcking 14 that is. I have ordered it on amazon And the seeds Come up quite nicely and they are sold as Russian Comfrey bocking 14???? I wish There was not so much confusion about this plant. 🙂
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms Год назад
You may want to push back on the seller of the seed. The reason people want this specific variety is because it is sterile and does not produce seed. If you were sold something that grows from seed, it is not Bocking-14 or Bocking-4.

Will the Bocking 14 spread by the roots, or by rhizomes?
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms Год назад
My plants grow larger each year, but it is really just one plant that is growing larger. If the roots are cut, they will grow a new plant. So if you leave it alone, you'll have just one large plant. As soon as you put a shovel in the ground and break a root, you get new plants popping up.

If I may add comment as this thread was enlightening to me. I planted purchased bocking 14 comfrey with the understanding that they would not become invasive like wild comfrey. …left 3 plants in place for 3 years…no spread. This spring I dug up the roots of one of the plants to place in other areas of my garden. To my surprise, the plant I dug up and took some roots from, now seems to have spread and is popping up 2 to 3 feet from where the original plant was! So am just wondering why, and giving heads up, to others, that it seems that even the bocking14 will spread if the roots are disturbed!

How many years should you let it grow before you dig up for propagation? I just planted 50 cuttings directly in ground. I'll be happy with a 50% success but I'm guessing I should let a plant be for about 3 years before I dig it up for propagation. Any advice is helpful. Thanks

...stick yr hand in the earth next to the plant,..feel for root,..if theres 2inches of it,cut it n stick it in the earth-it might die back,but it'll come back,..i do this every year,..if it has some leaf,it works(in SouthAfrica anyhow)

I have had success after one year/season of growth from a root fragment. I end up with several(3) crowns with growth points and 5 good(pencil plus thickness and 2"+)root cuttings. The longer you wait the more crowns and roots you with get.
@greatescapefarms
@greatescapefarms 3 года назад
Comfrey is very prolific and very hardy. If it is in decent soil, you should be able to get cuttings after 1 year and could pull the entire plant out of the ground and divide it many times over after 3 years.

The Bocking 4 and 14 varieties do not reproduce via seeds so they do not become invasive like some non Bocking varieties will.
