Dear, Thank you for your video ! The Epiphyllum is a very meaningfull plant to me. My grandfather who died 30 years ago, I have this plant from his home. Its the only thing that I have to remember him. I still have this plant ...and took cuttings to give as a present to all the grandchildren of my grandfather. After Christmas it has very big red flowers ... In Summer my cactus has summerholidays outside on the balcony. ( the street tree project ... All the borders around 8 trees are deep cleaned ...soil renefreshed ... Planted lupines ( to improve the soil) And ruta graveolens ...repellent cat and dogs .. and many little pansies. I think i ve planted more than 100 pansies ...) I m happy ...street view is improved. Hope the neighborhood will treat it with respect) But I have a big seed collection ...the battle can begin ...I wont give up). All the best to you. Stay healthy and safe. Enjoy the garden. Kind regards, Marcus

Dear Marcus, sorry I seem to have missed your comment. I am happy your street project is progressing so well and I do hope your neighbours appreciate all the work you have done. the story of your epiphyllum is beautiful. It is very meaningful to have a plant, like that, that was much loved by your grandfather and hopefully all the grandchildren and their children can pass it on, enjoy it and remember him. Take care and have a wonderful weekend. Rachel

@@marcusseidel6824 Marcus, I certainly read all comments although I don't always reply in a timely manner. Your comment went into spam for some reason. It wasn't originally in spam but then it disappeared and showed up in spam some time later, which is weird. Actually I think this has happened with your comments before so what I have done is moved you to 'approved user' status. Hopefully this will stop it happening again. Fingers crossed and all the best for your ongoing project.

I have over 100 different varieties of eppies and I have found planting them "upside down" works very well if the cutting has aerial roots that have developed at or near the top. They also root very well if you pin an uncut stem tip on the soil surface. Once rooted the stem can be separated from the mother plant.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 года назад
I guess different epi varieties have different tendencies because of their different parentage. Only one of my epis has ever produced those aerial roots but, of course, in that case the job of propagation is already half done! Many varieties refuse to grow roots if planted upside down. Good for you if you have the space for layering your plants. Happy growing!

Hello from Chicago! Love your videos, they have been very helpful to me! Thank you! I'm wondering, do epiphyllum cuttings root better in a cool or warm area. I have 2 options, the air conditioned house at about a constant 27 degrees Celsius, or in our sunroom, which varies between 21- 35 degrees Celsius right now.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Год назад
Hello from Wexford, Ireland to Chicago. Glad you found the video useful. I would try the epi cutting in the constant temperature of the house but they would no doubt be alright alternatively in the sunroom. PS I appreciate your conversion of Fahrenheit to Celsius for my benefit 😉

Have been unable to find an answer to my quandary! Perhaps another epi-lover can help? I have SO many very thin, hairy tendrils growing off my healthy "leaves". Should they be snipped off? They are in addition to the normal bigger off-shoots. Epis & other cactus-types are my favorite plants & I don't want to damage them, if they should be left alone.

Hi. Thank you for sharing. Great video. I wonder if you can advise me. I bought a pot of ephi a week ago. I spotted one of the stems yellowing at the base a few days later. 2 other stems are showing signs of yellowing too. I hv not watered it since I got it because the soil was very wet due to the heavy rain that day, prior to my purchase. Could this stem yellowing be a sign of root rot? Or because I have not watered them? The top soil looks dry but less than half inch dien, it is still moist. What should do? I'm thinking of propagating a stem or two, just in case the yellowing spreads. Thank you in advance.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Год назад
Firstly, do propagate your epi straight away! Chose the best looking stem. I would think the problem is overwatering. Wait until the soil dries out completely before rewatering and keep it out of the rain. I am not sure where you are but epis need very little water in winter in my part of the world. Hope this helps.
@gabeee4332

If it's sitting in soggy soil at the bottom it may not be draining well they do NOT like sitting in water I had this issue years ago when I first started growing epis...I ended up taking the plant out of the soggy mess repotted it in a new dry soil waited to water and just a bit that pot would never have dried out. I think the most common issue folks have is over watering we learn as we get use to what these beautiful plants like best...fertilizers pests disease etc. Lots to learn but well worth it ❤ I love my epis...and I have all sorts of colors just beautiful even when not in bloom they're an awsome plant.

How long can they stay with the bottom callused? I want to send a few to my friend on the other side of the coast via mail, I don't know if they'll grow roots if the bottom is dry for too long.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
I can't say exactly how long they will last before potting but they will certainly survive a trip in the post of up to 10 days. Hope this helps

@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
There could be many reasons why your epi has never flowered - not enough sun, insufficient fertilizer, too small a pot! Take a look at this video and maybe you can find the solution yourself... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M97BPOwKM6c.html

@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 года назад
Cool. I'm not so keen on rooting plants in water generally as the roots then need to adjust to soil afterwards. I do root certain plants in water but for epis, where they root so reliably, there is little point.

You know, I have a table full of them waiting for me to do something with them from when one of the [insert bad word(s)] landscapers knocked over the plant stand mine are on. Broke all the pots and plants into a million pieces. Couldn't even be bothered to knock on the door and apologize, knowing full well I was home, just pushed it all into a pile and walked away. Now I don't know what is what. I am still mad and glad that company got fired. I'm half tempted to try potting some in coconut husk chunks and see how they do.
