Well, if this makes you feel better I decapitated one while transfering it to its new pot. I was holding it softly to prevent any leaf from breaking, but she just wanted to end with her misery or something and fell off my hand. She lost a good amount of leaves and the "decapitated head" was such a small rosette that dried out days later. None of the leaves I put over soil have either rooted or rotted (there has been a month). But not everything is sad in this story, and few days ago I saw that from the main stem are growing 2 small babies (fingernail size)

I have a question. I watched another channel for leaf propogation and followed their steps ( wait two weeks before putting on a dish with an inch or two of soil and mist daily) and now my leaves are shriveling and turning yellow, some have rotten and died. I did not water them much after realizing these signs that they were overwatered therefore I'm not sure why they are still shriveling up and dying. Some grew roots and many of them didn't. Oh yeah and I had a grow light on them while in the soil. My question after watching this video is: Do my leaves still have a chance if I remove the soil and try dry propagation and place them in a shady area? By the way I live in NY and I'm doing everything from inside my apartment where the temperature of the is 70. I love your videos thank you for being very detailed, you def just gained a new subscriber.
@AngelsGrove

Hi! Succulent propagation can be so much fun but it can also be super frustrating. If the leaves already have rot, it is most likely not going to recover. I mean, you can obviously try it since it won’t hurt but honestly, it most likely won’t. Now, if you have some more leaves you can propagate I would try again but with making a few adjustments. Make sure the leaves aren’t too close to the lights cause this can make the shrivel up too fast and burn the roots, best would be a spot next to your grow light where they might get some of the light but just barely. I also don’t like to mist my leaves until they start growing roots just to make sure I don’t rot them out. Leaves will usually put the roots out on their own so you shouldn’t have to water them to ‘prompt’ the growth or anything. Hope that helps! Good luck!

I too have viewed dozens of propagation videos and this is my go to videos however, there are two points I am unsure about : Do the rosettes with leaves attached need to be misted with water every day? Do the rosettes have to be planted in very small pots and replanted as they out grow them ? I know it's an America thing g but calling the soil / compost DIRT really puts my teeth on edge .......dirt is unwanted, rubbish, detritus etc but soil and compost is the growing media ( everywhere else in the world !)

Great video!! I have recently started propagating succulents too and it’s going so well!! It’s been almost a month and I’m seeing so much growth!!! Super exciting stuff lol. My only question is this; once the leaf falls off and you can plant in into the soil, how much water do you give them??
@AngelsGrove
@AngelsGrove 5 лет назад
Water when the soil is dry. So depending on the size you will have to change the amount. So for really tiny ones who don't have as much water in their leaves stored, make sure you keep an eye on it and water when the soil dries out which could be every day. For bigger ones they can last a little longer. But good rule of thumb is whenever the soil is dry.

great job. theyre beautiful. how can i tell if i have mealy bugs on them? and how often should i spray them with alcohol?
@AngelsGrove
@AngelsGrove 6 лет назад
Sometimes you can see them, they are little white oval things usually attached to the stem. Some signs the plant gives off are scaring or stunted growth. I spray with rubbing alcohol only when I see them. I take tweezers and pull them off to kill the ones I can see and then spray once and keep out of light until it has a chance to recover its powder.

Your little tray you had the Von Nurnbergs on gave me an idea for propagation. A tiered lazy Suzan....right? Hmmm I’m going to test it out! Haworthias, like aloe and agaves can reproduce from the leaf like other succulents however it could take a year to get a tiny little thing. I found one video here on RU-vid. By Monii’s Garden, in the search tab “Haworthia propagation” his video is secon under you propagation video. :) it was very instructive and I certainly learn a thing or too!
@AngelsGrove

@erins.5420
@erins.5420 5 лет назад
Angel's Grove I have been trying to propagate for months. Maybe out of the hundreds and hundreds I’ve taken care of individually 3 showed roots, I was getting licking buying new succulents with babies already formed just not fully grown. I’ve killed them all, well this is going to blow your mind. I cut myself with a dull knife I was using for cleaning up my plants and just got an aloe plant. Yup I sliced of a piece and when the bleeding stopped I smothered it with aloe. This was in front of my propagation trays and I was needing to lay out some leaves I’ve just snapped. Well the aloe not only repairs broken tips from snapping off and makes them viable (I rubbed aloe all over the damaged ones) and low and behold only the damaged leafs that weren’t supposed to be able to do this but o my the damaged one pushed roots out! They pushed roots out 5 days after putting the aloe on them. That’s also 5 days after I took them off the plant. So back to me killing babies....succulents....you actually made me realize my fault. I was hurrying the roots all the way. I finally figured out not even sprinkling dirt is good for where I live (dry, hot and dry Phoenix), so not soil on roots. Now I’m on stage two waiting for the babies to grow bigger to move to soil in bigger pots and take the mom off or wait for the roots to dig in. Thank you, this video was what saved my baby Sucs. For some reason no one not one person stresses that killing your succulent babies or roots shriveling up is because the roots are covered by soil which is not what the babies want so they die in the long run.
@erins.5420
@erins.5420 5 лет назад
Angel's Grove one more thing with aloe, or repairs leafs still attached to Sucs. I have a terrible time selecting the wrong leaf that will make the plant lopsided by accidentally knocking into it, whatever the case maybe if it’s a loose leaf or halfsnapped leaf the aloe will rescue that too!! Do repairs the business end of the succulent to let it reproduce, patches up accidental nail stabbings and glues leafs more securely to the stem to keep it esthetically pleasing. I just looked at all the propagation leafs I have dozed with aloe three days ago, all but 6 are showing sines of rooting or bulging out. Before zero! It was worse than failure, now I’m at 99% success even the damaged tips? Ya it’s a big deal for me. I thought no matter what I couldn’t get this figured out. I’d still be sitting here getting frustrated on why nothing would root, I did damn near everything and then some plus tweaking conditions and situations. So when this happened and I got the results I did you need to know and try to confirm it works and if you’d like to share it with everyone cool!
@AngelsGrove
@AngelsGrove 5 лет назад
thank you for sharing, that is so strange but aloe is amazing so I don't doubt it!
@FusionDeveloper
@FusionDeveloper 6 лет назад
So, it seems like when you remove a leaf, you are actually removing the microscopic new branch that is on the plant between the base of the leaf and the stem. I say this, because if you remove the tip of the base of the leaf, then you say it won't grow. There are plants like "The Snake Plant", which you can root a piece of a leaf, meaning you can create many plants, from a single leaf, by cutting it into pieces. However, it's not a good way of propagation for that plant, since, it sends up new shoots from the rhizome, which you can just cut off and plant.

I just started with succulents because flowers would always die on me. I just started with a few leaves. I had some on a drying tray and the ones that were already dry i put on soil. The ones on soil didn’t do anything but the ones i left on the drying tray have little roots! 😍 I’ve gotten this far & im almost afraid that ill take the wrong step. How long can i dry propagate for? & Where do i spray the ones in soil with water? TIA 💖
@AngelsGrove
@AngelsGrove 6 лет назад
Yay! So once roots start forming you should be able to move them onto the soil and begin watering! You can dry propagate though til the mother leaf dries up and falls off. I've dry propagated a ton of babies and it works great but if you can add water I find that they grow faster!
@3qazlauren

Just wanted to point out that succulents can and do absorb water from their leaves. It is not necessary to make sure the plant had been watered recently to remove leaves for propagation. There is science behind it and if you are interested I recommend you check it out! Plump leaves are, however, easier to pluck off most of the time
@AngelsGrove
@AngelsGrove 6 лет назад
I haven't seen that before! Is there a book? I am just going off of experience and those that I have watered before pulling always just do better.
@3qazlauren
@3qazlauren 6 лет назад
Angel's Grove when I find where I got it from I will link it to you. Having a bit of trouble finding it now, sorry! In my experience I have had some luck with taking leaves that were kind of withered and putting them on damp soil for a day or so and then moving to dry soil. In general I think thicker leaves tend not to put out roots or babies until they are a little shriveled but thinner leaves might dry out before they can get the chance. With super thin leaves that don't generally propagate well, I've had some success propagating on slightly damp soil

How often do you water if you have succulents under a grow light for 12-14 hrs a day either using cactus/succulent soil or how long if using pumice? I have a few of them flowering looking kind, a panda fuzzy thing an a couple spikey ones like your ginormous ones you showed (thus far I wasn't sure if I should put any of them under a grow light, when I first got them I did & then I moved them to the dining room table near the grow lights so they do get exposure, but now I'll be moving them back under the grow light.) Also, I watched another propagating video an man.... apparently it was all wrong, but I have had luck with propagating one so far, I just hope I don't have those bugs or root rot. It seems to be growing bigger 👍🏻😏

It all depends on what kind of succulents you are propagating. I am going to be posting a one month update of my mandala within the next couple of days and you can see where mine are in comparison. Mine are also mostly roots. What matters more in my opinion is how shriveled your leaf is at this point. You are probably doing fine. Some just make babies faster than others, I have about 10 varieties I have been growing for a month and only about 3 have babies so far. Hope that helps!

Can you tell me what that's called? Mine has four little rosettes on it, facing in four directions (it started as one big rosette years ago). Can I split them and plant them separately? In the same way you have shown? Thanks so much! I am more of a tomato and veggie grower, and for some weird reason, I kill all the succulents I've ever gotten. Hopefully now with some instructions from you, I can keep them happily going and multiplying!

Haha! I bet it is an echeveria of some sort, possibly a black knight or black prince? I just painted in the colors that I wanted for the photo but if it is dark like that, those are my guesses! I also made it dry for over 3 days for the leaf-cutting to dry like many other people say you should do and now I placed them in the soil about 5 days ago... Please tell me...

MinerFreakPVP no worries!! It can take weeks before you see anything! This is a process that requires lots of patience but it is worth it! Unless your leaf completely dries up or looks rotten(black) just leave it there!

Also, I am using this water propagation method where I placed my succulent leaves in a plate with water thinking that it will root. I have made them callous over for about 3-4 days before doing so. Do you think they will grow good and root with a baby plant or they will just rot? Because this was their first day of this method. Please let me know quick so I can change. Thanks a lot! Love your tips and information.

There are so many people that swear by water propagation. I personally have never liked it and my dry propagation methods have always been reliable. But that doesn't mean it won't work!

From my experience, Succulent leaflets typically take anywhere from five days to two weeks to start rooting. I Usually start to see little baby leaves emerging from the mother leaf after three weeks. The time it takes may differ though, depending on light, temperature, watering, and the species. Good luck!

It can take anywhere from a week to 3 weeks depending on the variety it is. Propagating is so easy and fun to do. I grow so many succulents, veggies, herbs, and many house plants. Happy planting I hope your succulent babies Sprout and do good for you!

1- How long does it take a rosette to form the leaf cutting? 2- So you just take a leaf an place it, as you did without any soil, and it will grow?

Waqas it can take several months to form a rosette from a leaf. I think you would find my propagation playlist interesting. I have a lot of updates and different ways of propagating on there

I am searching for a video in which the person explains what kind of soil they use to propagate their leaves in! Do you use the same soil that your succulents grow in or something else? Does it matter? I have had leaves drop off and start to grow right by the mother plant, but as many of us know, not all succulents are the same. I am starting a propagation tray. Guess I will just use what I have handy since no one is saying what I should use.

Thank you 🙏🏼 it is very helpful. I wonder when you put a leaves down to root, is it matter whether the leave is upside facing upwards or upside down. ❤️👌

I have some put both ways. In my experience, they do fine either way. If you do face the leaf down the plant will have to grow up and around because it does come from the top of the leaf. Hope that helps!

When do you start watering? When you transfer to the propagation tray with soil or when you transfer to individual pots?

I took a leaf from my spiked plant the same as that treated it like a cutting by standing the leaf upwards placing the end in the soil and I got 3 babies but it’s painfully slow, about 4 months and they’re only tiny.

Thanks for this video. Very helpful. I’m trying at my first batch ever right now & I’m becoming a bit obsessive. But my question is when watering- spritzing, is it ok to leave a lil water on the leaves??? I really don’t want them to rot before any roots grow.
@AngelsGrove
@AngelsGrove 5 лет назад
Dana Camilo it depends on your set up. If you have a very humid climate you need to be more careful for rotting. Watch my new video on watering your succulents. Some water won’t hurt if they are drying quickly

jcfretts I haven’t. I have used cinnamon to help with fungus but usually they do well without anything

Lori Stitt I personally haven’t ever seen significant growth when I had one on my succulents so that’s why I don’t use them anymore. I have a grow light video you should check out cause I have links to what I use below!

My succulents have grown pink roots but no new plants it’s been a while, any advice?
@AngelsGrove
@AngelsGrove 5 лет назад
This is super common. Unfortunately, sometimes the leaf only grows roots or only grows leaves. There isn't a way to promote the growth of the leaves that I have found. My best advice would be to keep waiting patiently as they can still develop them later on. Until the leaf is completely dried up and dead, just keep waiting. Water it consistently, minimum once a week and it will at least keep receiving water through the roots.
