🌸🥷🏼Trish San 😍💐 hello there 🤗 how are you doing? Enjoying your summer? I have the gloomiest of weeks coming up. Supposedly rain, but so far not a drop... just dull, and cold, meh! Seramis is the bomb! It is so satisfying to be able to use it over and over again. It took me 3 years to have to buy another bag, simply because of the recycling. (and now with some orchids growing up, just a little added stash was needed for eventualities 👍🏼) but yeah... even with moss growing on seramis, it falls off so easily. I find that, sometimes leca is harder to get free of root remnants. Really appreciate you watching, 🌸🥷🏼and... I wish you a beautiful summer's day 🤗🌸

I have never used any of those products. So many mini's have such fine tiny roots I'm not sure how they would do. Not to say that I've totally not thought about trying some of them. 🙂 I do pre rinse most of my bark and or moss before use though. 😅 Thanks for the info Nina....

Hi Robert 🤗💐 I am going to pot up the Tolumnia Pomegranate into seramis, BUT,... it will have to be mixed with terrarium grit and the top layer will have to be a dry media as well. Terrarium grit comes to mind for that as well. That is how I would go about breaking up the super high moisture in the pot for fine roots. I lost some Tolumnias in SH with leca, and I think I got the size of the leca ratio to root size totally wrong. Looking forward to getting that tolumnia into the mix and see what happens, but this is NOT the time of year to be messing around with Tolumnia roots transitioning 😬 hope your Monday is going well, Robert! Thank you so much for watching 🥰🌸

Ladies, did you play football with your Seramis-bags before using it? I have been using pure Seramis-branded granulate directly out of the bags (small pieces) for years with my Paphiopedilum without any problems. The plants are happy. Take care.

Hi!! 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you in the comments before, so first of all, a warm warm welcome and secondly thank you so much for being here, for watching and for your excellent comment 😂😂 'did you play football with your seramis bags before using it?' 😂🤪🤣 I laughed when I read that because you make a great point! Well, I can assure you, that I did not, but I do not know if the nursery where I bought it at used it for recreational activities prior to selling the bags 😂 so, I bought this seramis cheaply from a German nursery that was not selling it from the branded bags. I could not source the branded bags without paying an exorbitant shipping fee, so I opted for these cheaper bags when I was purchasing orchids from the nursery. Its a minor headache to get rid of the dust, but I have my earlier seramis from back in 2018, still to this day and... the dust is now a thing of the past. But... again, thank you so much for your fantastic comment and thank you for watching 🫶🏼 I hope that you are having a great day... once again, welcome ❤️🌸

Still rationing my 6 year old bag of Seramis Granulate(much finer than the Orchitop version) no longer available in the U.S ;-(. This is great stuff!! Very porous and wicking so doesn't channel water the way LECA can.....guess I will have to make my own poor-mans version with broken terra-cotta and a rock tumbler ;-) P.S. Pedantic warning! One rinsing thing I do differently for the first rinse is to dunk it gently up and down in a 5 gal bucket of water while still in a strainer. If I just go top down under the sink the top layers seem to act like and umbrella for everything below and it doesn't get rid of nearly as much dust....and as you probably know, agitating it by hand against itself just abrades it away and makes more dust. Lessons learned from cleaning aquarium gravel and rice ;)
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
jdawg! hi 🙌🏼💐 the fine granulate is definitely much more volatile than this one which has a mix of the large and fine, more on the large side, but you could see what was left in the pot... that is what I assume you would consider fine. If I had broken terracotta and a rock tumbler, I would make my own seramis as well... imagine the luxury of being able to decide the size of the seramis! Even make it a little larger than what the largest pieces in these bags are. It would be somewhat of a game changer to be able to tweak the size! I would go for it 👍🏼 I hear you with the umbrella effect! You have a good point there! The submerging method is also something advisable for akadama, because that is even more brittle. As I am only doing small batches, for convenience sake, I stick to the kitchen and let the water run. But yes, the smaller the particles and the more brittle the material, the submerging breaks that umbrella effect! Good point 👍🏼 I hardly handle akadama when it is wet. I rinse it through thoroughly and then leave it to dry. Thank you so much for adding that additional cleaning nugget! Really appreciate you taking the time and thank you for watching 🤗 have yourself a great start to the week 🌸

I would be tempted to try that if it wasn't too much trouble for me and my disability. I will stick to river rock. Even that may have to change since it makes.the pots too heavy for me to lift and water anymore. ( The cattleyas anyway) 😊👍
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
Hi Valarie 😍💐I can imagine the weight of the pots can become an issue long term. I have to really watch out for carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists, and sometimes I feel it when I carry pots. Especially the cattleyas 😉 and that is me with leca in a pot. I could not manage river rock... its a shame, because we have sooo much of that around here just in the river beds that would be so easily brought home. I hope that you are having a great start to your day, Valarie 🥰 thank you so much for watching 🌸

Doesn’t matter what media I use I always wash it before I use it if it’s bark I leave it to stand in a bucket for three or four days then chuck her water away do it again and put some fertilisers and some feeding it then I repot my plants are usual way
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
Andrea 😍💐thank you so much for also watching this video! When I used to grow in bark and such, I would also soak my new batch prior to using it 👍🏼 if needed, I would also not wait for it to dry to repot. Especially cattleyas, it was nice to put them in the pot, with damp media straight away, giving the roots access to humidity. For me, it made for a gentler repot as well. Ahhhh the days of organic growing. Sometimes, I do miss them, especially in winter, because it is a safer set up for the cold temperatures. But, I have to think of my climate that takes up 80% of my year. But, winter, is scary for my and my orchids. One day, maybe, I can afford to use heat mats again... until then, it is a 'dance' of variables. 7 more weeks to go 🤞🏼

🦒👌❤️💐!!! That was great!!! I never bought seramis but I have some pieces that came attached to the pacavia you sent me. So I am using them and I can see how round they are on the edges. Do they come already that way or is it the abrasion that makes them round? The reason I ask is because I bought several bags of broken clay for topping in the garden. I have a whole border topped with it and also several pots. Those pieces I bought look a lot like seramis at first sight except that they are irregular and sort of sharpy on the edges. I wonder, however if the material is about the same. I thought of trying it with my Cattleyas but I never did. Although I still use bark and presumably continue to do so, I am using stones and charcoal in larger quantities as a way to make substrate more airy and also delay bark decomposition and avoid acidity. Why not add this stuff too? Brazilians use pieces of roof tile to hold the roots in their pots so why not use my brick garden topping as well although in a mix? I will sterelize them like you do with seramis as soon as I buy a new bag. Oh do they leave a lot of dust in the van😵... They come in net bags of 5 kilos... The sun seems to be here on holiday this month instead of going to the mediterranean área. The lack of rain will makes us suffer, though. I wonder how rainy February will be. Have a nice cosy day amiga mia, wear your gloves and keepy warm ❤️😍🤗❤️
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
FFF 🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰😘💐 good morning, meine liebe Freundin! They come rounded off and once the initial dust is dealt with, there may be a little abrasion as the material is being used and reused, but it is so minimal that it still stays in tact, now, 4 years later. Broken clay will work, I don't know how big the pieces are on the clay, but if they would be too big then, taking a hammer to them will give you smaller pieces (the largest piece in a seramis bag like this is just about 2cm). Also, I am assuming that the clay you use as topping, has no glazed parts? I would advise against any glazed pieces. Because of how unevenly the water distributes around pieces like that. I was thinking of using decorative tiles to mount my orchids on, back in the day, but then I thought about the weight issue. Orchids grow and all of that just increases in the weight, so I never went down that route. But yes... especially the pretty outdoor clay lamp shades, no painted decor on them, I was eyeing those up back in the day. 👍🏼 sharp edges are not an issue, imo, some people will say otherwise, but if I can source raw broken clay, I would not be bothered using it even if it has sharp edges. When you get another bag, lay down a cut open large garbage bag where you will put the net clay bag, at least that way you can collect the dust afterwards by just folding the garbage bag over the other one. Today... it is dark! I had one light on for the orchids, all night, but nothing more until midnight tonight. It is not raining, there is no wind, it is just a gloomy day outside 👎🏼 yuck! Enjoy your beautiful sunshine, amiga mia!! I shall be cleaning around the house, just to do something and not go nuts 🥶thank you so much for watching 😘❤️ can you believe that the electricity cost yesterday was more than 600% compared to the same day in 2021 😱😰 scary stuff!

couldn't you start with a less fine mesh strainer and shake out the dust when it is dry? Might save some time with all the rinsing. Having to do prep work turns people off of coconut husk too. I suppose opening a bag and being able to just use something is easier. But even bark bags are quite dusty as you get to the bottom. Now how do you clean off roots that have attached to the seramis? I can't imagine cleaning those pieces one at a time.
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids 2 года назад
Don Miguel 😍💐there is too much abrasion while the seramis is still dry and shaking it through a finer strainer. It behaves like a cheese grater. This is faster 😬 If there are old pieces of root, they normally come off easy on the next boil. I have more issues with getting root 'remains' off of leca than seramis. Catasetinae are the WORST to get off leca... it is literally having to take a little scrubby pad and scrub the remnants off every single bit of leca. Catasetinae roots have a very papery texture, and a nightmare to clean off. Seramis is the easiest of the 2. LOVE the stuff!! Not that I am going to need much of it this coming season, but I am assessing my media stash to be ready. Need me some more leca, to leach out for the coming 4 months. It is akin to being in the fashion industry 😅 gotta plan ahead and stay on top of what the next seasons trends are 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching! I hope you are staying nice and toasty! 😘🌸

buy better quality seramis with no dust. you're risking to clog your sink pipes. there are some brands that offer great products with no crushed or dust residue, just pure granules!
@NinjaOrchids
@NinjaOrchids Год назад
Hi! 🤩💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and a massive thank you for being here, for watching the video and your comment 👍🏼 the budget sometimes does not allow for the better quality seramis, and with that comes the downside of having dust. So, if anyone is in my situation, I want them to know that it is ok to go for seramis that is more affordable even with dust to contend with. I have recycled my seramis now for 5 years, and this new batch needed to be brought in because the collection was expanding 😬 but once the dust is all rinsed off, in small increments, boiled and rinsed again, it behaves just as well as any of the more pricey stuff. No clogged sinks 👍🏼 But, I would appreciate it if you could point me and others into the direction of better quality seramis. Do you have any brand names other than the actual seramis brand? I am in S'ern Spain, so have access to European brands. It would be really helpful if you could mention brand names, thank you so much! 🫶🏼🌸
