It's crazy how smartphones these days can take a similar video while keeping that window well expose including the b!uesky as well as the subject. I'm new to dslr and I realize how much I hate taking photos against the windows. 😅 So much to learn and I hope my patience can keep up.

Some times I had same problem to decide between to take a silhouette or get everything like in HDR. In case you want second option you can use many things to provide light on subject as a white paper, a shirt, a blanket, etc. etc. Of course a real HDR is a solution for those who want everything like me :) Any how, silhouette is an artistic option to be considered. Thanks, for tips so helpful given by you.

Another way is to expose the ambient(background in this case) 1-2 stops down at the aperture needed for the background being inside the DOF for the subject. Stopped down, will require a slow shutter speed for such as 1/10 sec.. Once that meters properly for the background, add flash in BL("balanced" light mode and REAR Curtain flash triggering) to expose the subject. Be sure to have the the window at an angle so flash reflected light does not alter the flash power.. If the background is not against a window, you can ignore the angle suggestion. This technique is useful for events where you want room light properly exposed so the background scene or action properly exposed but the flash lighting the only the subject. This is very effective and easy to balance the room exposure to the near subject.. You can drop to even lower speeds if you would like the background action with light trails showing motion. The flash power falls off very quickly with distance so flash does not contribute to the background exposure. but the subject is properly exposed. and any motion of the subject is frozen by the the short flash duration.. The term for this is Dragging the Shutter. When done as described the room is well exposed and can look like a well lit room or daylight so it does no look like a flash shot at all. Be sure to under expose background 1-2 stops before turning on the flash or the subject will be under exposed. It sounds more complicate than it is and can be used in many applications like clubs. real estate or weddings where the different light colors and looks, such as strobes and lasers in a dance club or wedding reception to look natural You subject needs to be closer to you than the background scene.

Nice and direct! Perfect video that shows many great options. When I have shot this style before, and I didn't have a light or reflector, I shot two images with my camera on a tripod. One of the scene outside of the window and then one of my model subject posing in the window. Then I just masked and made adjustments to the image blend in photo shop. More work, indeed, but compositing can be another option. Love your videos =)

You can get similar results with flash, but you may have lots of reflections in the window and some hard shadows because flashes are more powerful. Flashes just need more control than this continuous light.

I thought the bit where you said “a silhouette image is a photographic style, but an overexposed image is just a bad image” was somewhat funny. Why can’t a properly exposed face with blown out background be a photographic style too?
@yuliyapanchenko
@yuliyapanchenko 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment Oliver. Of course that could be as well. I do lots of semi-silhouette photos or airy style, but it is done intentionally. This video is for beginners and majority of the beginners don’t balance the light because they never pay attention to the background and only focus on the subject. A professional photographer or cinematographer will always balance the colors and light and then stylize it by adjusting the intensity of the light and camera settings to achieve the look they are going for. In my example in this video, it would just be an over exposed image and really no style to it, but in different outfits and environment it could be a style :)
@oliverracz2686
@oliverracz2686 2 года назад
@@yuliyapanchenko Right, I think we mostly agree, and you give good advice. I just think beginners should also be encouraged to experiment with unconventional lighting conditions, but they should perhaps be advised that it's harder to get a result that most people find pleasing. Maybe they'll find a niche they like and incorporate it into their style. When I was a beginning photographer (I'm not professional now by any definition of the word, just a more experienced hobbyist), I was always told to avoid backlit conditions, but the great majority of my current landscape shots are backlit. The pictures turn out much more interesting. Great channel, by the way!
@yuliyapanchenko
@yuliyapanchenko 2 года назад
@@oliverracz2686 Thanks for your kind reply. What you say is true, but you know how education is. Learn the rules and once mastered them, break them lol Also the topic of my video is “how to get the right exposure in front if a window” so I am only talking about getting the proper exposure. If you look at my images on Instagram: @ypboudoir, I shoot a lot in front of the window and I always blow it out because I don’t want what’s behind me window to be shown. I would if I was living in a high rise in Manhattan :) In another video I will show different ways to shoot in front of the window for boudoir :)
@stanspb763
@stanspb763 Год назад
@@oliverracz2686 If you have control of negative light such as black fabric covered V-Flats to reduce the "air" loss of contrast the blown out background can look good with the subject having more contrast. In someone's bedroom draping black fabric outside the frame can reduce air also.

@yuliyapanchenko
@yuliyapanchenko 2 месяца назад
Hi! The camera and light setting is completely irrelevant to this topic. You need to adjust the camera and light until you get the balanced exposure. Your background window light is not gonna be the same as mine and you will never get the same result trying to duplicate my settings. In addition, what if you want shallow depth of field or wide depth of field? There are many things that you as a photographer want to do differently. The take away from this tutorial is to not only expose your camera to the background nor the subject because you will wither have silhouette subject or over exposed background. An additional light source is needed to balance the light.
