Jello Biafra....Had the pleasure of playing a handful of shows with him, doing our last album on his label (Alternative Tentacles), and hanging out with him a bunch while touring! (Band I was in was called Mischief Brew). Cheers Timmy, still struggling with this but your video helped a ton!
@@youngerbrotherpictures amazing! No one else was able to get the answer! I also had the honor of playing a few shows with the Guantanamo School of Medicine. I remember the name Mischief Brew. Folk punk, right?
@@TimmyLodhi Yes indeed. I mean not my favorite kind of music haha but I am also biased because I was in the band so I loved it. Small world, to stumble across this video today randomly. Was just checking out some of your other work, really awesome stuff Timmy. Seriously great! Subscribed and hoping to see more!
The zebras to 100 thing is going to be the most helpful thing ever. I had it set to 70 and kept thinking I was WAY over exposed because of the zebras - and then my shadows were unrecoverable. Setting them to 100 makes so much more sense - and now knowing that those highlights will be recoverable still as long as they're not blown out is incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Timmy, thank you. Thank you for making it easy to understand, follow along and clarify so may questions I’ve had for the last 2yrs of owning my A7III when it comes to using and exposing SLOG. You don’t understand how many videos I’ve seen that have left me clueless or more confused. I’m glad I bumped into your channel and hope you continue to make videos in general.
That's a pretty good and short introduction to a topic that is not easy for everybody. :) I started to record in Slog 2 just recently and tried 2 things differently: 1) I set my zebras to 106. I saw a video on Harv's channel where he stated to set "lower limit" for highlight preservation to the output value of your gamma (which, for Slog2, is 106). Don't know whether it's a big difference to your approach, however it works well. 2) As I don't like DaVinci and don't want to spend TOO MUCH time with the editing process in an application that takes months to learn on its own, I did something that most people will probably call a stupidity, but I set my colour space to Rec. 709 in camera, lowered saturation to -15 and tweaked all the depth and tint settings as I already knew how they work best for me with my Cine2 profile. What I end up with is a file that I only have to tweak in terms of exposure, contrast and (slightly) saturation while gaining a lot of dynamic range for scenes involving a bright sky. On an 8-bit camera (A7R III), this gives nice results. Even though pros might find this ridiculous, I can say that the amount of DR gained this way is significant. Not just over creative mode recording, but even over Cine2 which I would consider one of the best non-log gammas in terms of DR.
I've watched all ya videos on S-LOG 2 and hands down, the best on RU-vid. I've ran from shooting S-LOG 2 because of all the misinformation. But after watching your videos, I'm going back to S-LOG 2 on my Sony A7III.
Zebra!!!!! Of course!!! I'm shooting on my A7iii tomorrow as a second camera, and I've been pulling my hair figure out how to expose right without my waveforms. But of course I just need to use my zebras!! Thanks for saving me last hour!
I’ve been using Nikon for my videography but I have the A7iii and was intimidated to even try it for video. So many content creators provided crappy info that just confused me more. I’m going to try this setup out tomorrow. Thanks for the great info👍
Great Video i'm 14 years old and a filmmaker & Photographer, I have a question i'm shooting currently on my Sony ZV-E10 (8bit) slog 2 ITU709 Matrix can also use your convertion Lut or is it just for s gamut ?
Watched this on my phone and was like 'this guy's a genius'. Watched it on my monitor and was like 'this guy's a genius... whose point of focus was his microphone not his face'.
There isn't a video out there that shows how to create, export and distribute LUTS. If I knew, I'd make it myself but please consider doing a tutorial on that too!
Thanks for this. I just got the a7iii. I haven’t loved any of the other creators luts either. This is the first one I’ve loved because it actually looks great on darker skin. Going to use these tips today.
Hi, thanks for the video. I have the impression that there´s a tendency to shoot thinkin in post-color-grading stuff (S-Log2) and not to try setting the camera to film the way we want.
Hi Timmy Thanks for sharing your knowledge helped me improve myself so much Could you please do video about how to shout at night and low light please please please
I keep coming back to your channel. Will you do a video with your workflow using the ninja? I am starting to use zebras at 103+ on the ninja and 58 on the camera display to try to cover highlights and skin tones. It would be interesting to see how you work with the atomos. Peace!
I’m having a heck of a time understanding log. They say to expose to the right and bring exposure down in post to keep noise minimal but if you’re supposed to expose to the right than your skin tones shouldn’t be at 70IRE and the clipping point wouldn’t be at 100IRE. They both would be slightly higher but how much higher? I don’t love the idea of using monitor luts all the time. I’d love to know what to set my zebras so when the lut is off.
It can be complicated! You can overexpose a decent amount with SLOG-2 and still bring those values down to "correct exposure" in post. The idea is that it reduces shadow noise. The 70 IRE for skintones thing is subjective, really if you're focused on proper skin exposure for interviews or talking heads, but doesn't always mean it's gonna look good.
Hey Timmy, awesome video! I just got the atomos shinobi and was looking for a base lut that would just show me from slog2 to rec709. I prefer not to have a creative lut on there cause I wanted to do the color grading part myself! Thanks, also congrats on the 1k🙌🏻
I’ve been using Sony standard conversion LUT listed on their website. It’s not my favorite but it works for monitoring purposes. I also created my own a while back which I used for the purpose of overexposing which is in one of my previous videos. I think it’s the titled “the KEY to color grading your SLOG2 footage”
Awesome explanation for what your workflow is, and how it's all done. I've recently got back into photography and videography, after quite a while of not having the time. I've got an A6300 with the kit lens and a Sigma 30mm 2.8, and have always struggled exposing slog2 correctly. Are there any differences you'd recommend doing for the apsc cameras, or should your method work as well? Also, white balance doesn't seem to work on my camera, it just sets the white balance to green, have you ever faced that issue? Can't find much info on that bit thought you may have come across that issue before. Thanks for making such great content!
Hey thanks for watching! I’m only familiar with the a6400 but the exposure stuff with SLOG2 is generally the same. All 8-but cameras will struggle with LOG no matter what but I think it’s possible to still get great footage. Not sure what your white balance issue is about! Have you tried setting a custom white balance?
@@TimmyLodhi white balance works perfectly fine when I set it manually, but the automatic white balance with my grey card for some reason sets it green. Tried resetting the camera etc but still happens.
That is the standard detail level for SLOG2. Any higher than that and you're adding post-sharpening onto the image. You can do that in post if you really want to, but I don't suggest baking it in.
I have used SLOG-2 for low-light conditions in the past but to be honest, it's not the best. Because of the noise performance in the shadows, you tend to get a lot of ugly noise. I've had to cover this up by using denoiser plug-ins or adding grain to hide it. I think HLG or Cine3/4 might be better options for low-light.
Hey man thanks for the great explanation i have one question how to control the noise in slog as I'm facing it in outdoor and indoor wedding video in continiously entrance ?
Have you tried changing Color Mode to 709 instead of using S-Gamut? There have been articles saying Slog2 on 8-bit cameras works best with 709 color space rather than S-Gamut.
thanks for the video, I'm struggling to shoot 60p 50M with s-log2 even with your settings.. I'm getting a lot of color noise, and when I apply the luts you I feel like everything is blown out.
hey brother, i just started using my a7iii for video. I was trying PP8 (SLOG3) and shooting at the beach at 3 pm in the caribbbean, so very very bright. I got horrible banding all over the sky. I am using a CPL + VND too. Would SLOG2 reduce banding?
