How To Properly Train KNIFE DEFENSE!

When it comes to self defense against a knife there are not a ton of great options. The knife is one of the most dangerous weapons even in the hands of an untrained person. Kevin believes that because it is so hard to defend against a knife you need to practice and pressure test your responses to some of the worst case scenarios... like starting after already being stabbed. Here Kevin leads a private session showing knife defense versus the sewing machine or shanking attack. Build the habit of wrapping the knife when faced with a stabbing type motion.

When he redirected the blade. The instructor used a simple pull back taught in traditional martial arts. Sometimes people over think simplicity. Nothing is 100% but if you pay attention this a kata. He is teaching a pattern a form. I applaud him in showing a idea maybe not used in this manner. What ever you train it must be done many many times. First getting the steps down. Then the attacker must give a stimulus to illicit a near fight or flight response. We must remember to use our whole body. Every part is a weapon. Next we should be talking communicating with the attacker. I want hear me. When the attacker is listening he can feel. It's a psychological thing. Always think about escaping. Good stuff!

Hi Kevin... I'm a blackbelt (a self acknowledged paper dragon). I'm older now, and have never been tested in the real world. That said, my friends and acquaintances think me to be formidable because they know I've trained. I get asked about self defense occasionally and I always provide intelligence rather than technique. Your take on knife defense is the best I've seen on an internet video - and the very first to acknowledge that a person will need to take damage -and need to perform while taking damage, if they are to have a chance at avoiding the worst outcome. I've always enjoyed the following analogy from some years ago. I don't know its origin, but it basically states: "Knife defense is like trying to take a permanent marker from a two year old... You are going to get ink all over you." You have my respect! Keep up the good work!

I've liked the post technique exposure, very honest, showing that in a full true attacker resistance, it might be hard to break it and apply the counter technique. P.s.: my interest for knife defenses has always been a priority for me, because my first defensive event occurred when I was 7 yrs old in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from a bigger mugging kid; thus, don't minimize the reality of it, people ! This was more than 50 yrs ago ! Thank you for keeping it honest and real.

This is why you need speed, volume and intensity. If your loud fast and aggressive towards you attacker , It will throw them off and maybe confuse them. It could give you an upper hand as most attackers go for easy targets or what they perceive as easy targets. This is just my opinion from training in the marine corps. 🤷‍♂️ This is still a great tutorial. Practice is key in developing muscle memory and fast twitch response. When training, it's always(in my opinion) to train with random attacks as in a real attack, the attacker will not give you a heads up they your about to be attacked.

I used to work in a prison ..so I studied on my own for a long time. the elbow wrap is good ( I am definitely not an expert I don't mean to come across that way) My worries on the running is that he still has the weapon and is able to pursue. and like you have said anything can happen and go against your so called plan of defense. That being said I liked teachers who stress head control ie .. free hand pushing the head back hard and then taking the head hard to the ground, then knee to pin the head down while finding a way to take the weapon . After the redirect, take the head control, but some guys have no neck and getting the head to go backwards and to the pavement is maybe not possible. I'm rambling sorry . Thank you guys for the vid and pressure testing , PRESSURE TESTING!!! THANKS!

there is another video here somewhere where a veteran police officer and ex-marine is demonstrating exactly the same defense. it is meaningful to see two experienced people suggest the same defense. nothing fancy...just basic power defense. both agree that you will probably get cut. you need to accept that right now in advance. it will be critical to remain focused after you are cut or stabbed. i agree with starting from a position where you are already stabbed.

Hey guys thanks for the tips. When you get a chance can you please make another video on knife defense but in this one can your partner holding the knife, hold it the other way around.(His thumb would be supporting the back of the knife) Im not trying to be a smart ass or anything like that, I really would like to learn this. But honestly if some one came at me holding the knife like that, I wouldn't take them to serious, they would probably end up slicing their hand open if they attacked like that. But I did still take them technique's on board. In saying all that I really would like to learn a few moves with the knife held the other way, This type of attacker knows what he is doing and their is a strong chance he is going to seriously hurt me. Also I'm sure you will agree we are going to have to use different methods than the one's we just learnt if the knife is the other way around. Love your work, Keep it up. Thanks

Good trained attackers can generally transition between grips. The grip they use gives a sense of what techniques/style they are going to use. Reverse grip has a number of limitations, but people who are good at it are still a threat. The reverse grip is good for hooking, passing and control. 🤓

Ive usually used 2 knives, never lost a fight. You use one 6 inch blade and one 5 inch blade double sided. you sharpen these to a razor sharp style. I have a back up box cutters in socks No matter how bug or gow trained the personis they dropwhen grabbed you slice the wrists, neck and face thats even before stabbing. Happy to bring them them into any dojo and let you practice which is not full reality is you know its coming but happy for you to try.

Guru I have a question… I to have a little experience training in knife defense… However, considering the history of the Moro warriors ( with great respect), what caliber would you say would be most effective in a self defense situation vs a knife wielding threat specially if they are high on a drug or just mentally deranged ? I know the 45 acp was created due to the heavy casualties taken in the war… so what caliber would you say would be best ? 9, 40 , or 45 ?

nah its easier and takes less time to train how to avoid conflict. im not going to waste a lot of time training for this because this situation will not happen to me 99.999999% of my lifetime. its not worth the time to train for it. i just train myself to have a lifestyle and habbits that further reduce my chances significantly of getting into these type of situations.

While your comment is true it has to be accepted that there is always a small chance that this could happen. If your sitting quietly in a bar and someone you had not even seen suddenly yells "what you looking at" the fact that you did not look at him at all let alone in a bad way ain't gonna matter and if he is irrational enough to do this and won't accept your denial any form of verbal de-escalation likely won't work. Still due to the very low chance of it happening, low mortality rate if it does happen and amount of training needed to become competent I would say it's not worth training for.

Yeah that's the point of this video. He states you're gonna get cut/stabbed and starts from the worst case scenario because that's typically how knife attacks go: by complete surprise. Learning to fight back or extricate is your only option when you've already been stuck, bc irl the attacker will probably be rapidly prison shanking: hence the pressure training. It's crazy movements for a crazy situation. The alternative is death

Not trying to be a smart arse here but in all these scenarios all the knife holder (who in this video is not competent) has to do is turn his wrist and its a cut. You cant block a knife in real life, you can only run. I appreciate when backed into a corner you have to try and least do something but in all likely hood you are going to get cut.
