That pH meter failed or you had "dirty water" (it wasn't pure). 7.0 is neutral. With baking soda, it should be above 7.0 unless your water is acidic. I typically use deionized water then add vinegar/baking soda for demonstrative purposes as the ions can interfere with the reading. That being said, addition of solid baking soda should've been enough to at least get it to 7.0 if it was any appreciable amount.
@BPinney

For clarification, as you used deionized water... that orange meter simply failed the test.

Dig a 2 foot hole, 2 food deep and line the bottom with weed barrier and back fill with ericaceous compost. You can mix a little lime in every year and put a hand full of Osmocot fertiliser a few inches below the soil line( no need to scatter ) keep the soils damp and you'll be good.

You could spend a bit more on your meter for increased accuracy and confidence in the readings. The $100 range is not high-end equipment, but it certainly beats the $15-20 jobs. I've got one of the better consumer units because I use it for a number of things (Extech PH110). Also, for a few dollars, you can buy test solutions and be able to calibrate your meter. I appreciate your helpful tips on checking garden soil pH. That's what got me here. :-) And I keep coming back to your videos almost daily as I try to learn more about gardening.

I have a low cost rapitest ph meter that read the same ph no matter what I stuck it in so I bought another one . Same thing so I bought a different one same scenario well this year I was determined to figure out why . So I added like two handfuls of alum to two cups of water . It only dropped slightly . Then I got the idea to clean the probe with a mr clean cleaning eraser . Then it worked fine . Wish I thought of that before

The orange meter should have been well above 7 (neutral) in that baking soda solution. The better meters use a little glass bulb and they have to be kept in a KCl solution and calibrated every couple of weeks with a standard solution of 4.0 and 7.0 pH. You would take a soil sample and mix it with distilled water 1:1. Shake it vigorously and pour off the leachant, and test that. It will be VERY accurate.

NOTE: At the 3:07 minute mark, Gary uses the green, plastic scrubby to "shine up" the stainless steel middle of the probe. This should actually be done with a "piece of steel wool" at the end of the testing to remove any salt build-up. So, instead of the green scrubby, use material that would actually scuff up the probe and remove the salts. If the salt buildup continues on that probe, it will make that tester useless. (See: "Soil pH METER REVIEWED BY A SOIL SCIENTIST...). Be careful how you dry off your probes too. You don't want to break off the tips. So, take care in gripping the probe shaft and wiping it towards the tip. Just stop wiping when you get close to the tip. As for the actual testing, the pros say that (1) the water should be at ambient temperature. Not warm/hot, as this can alter the readings. So, on a Summer day, test in the early morning, or late in the day, under shadow. And of course, the (2) soil should be wet, if not at least moist, because the testing is a kind of electrical test, with one probe calibrated to a set reading by the manufacturer, and the other probe, the sampler of your soil. The tester passes a current from one probe, through your soil slurry, to the other. That's how the test is done. Dry soil will provide a false reading. Good video!

it also affects how iron and other minerals like manganese can be absorbed. Your plant can die if it has the wrong ph, because it can't get the nutrients it needs. If you find the lower and newer leaves on your plant getting yellow with green veins(not dropping off, just turning yellow) test the PH. If the leaves are all at the center of the plant, this may indicate root damage. Yellow leaves dropping off, or in the case of Gardenia, buds also dropping, leaf edges and buds (even flowers) turning brown, falling off etc are a good sign the plant is being overwatered. Gardenia likes a PH of 5.0 to 6.0. 7 is too high. Blackberries & strawberries like between 5.5 and 6.5 . Blueberries also like the more acidic soil. So not all plants are going to be healthy at a 7 PH.

The distilled in neutral. So you get an accurate reading of just the soil. After raining and watering for years, I think your soil has adjusted to that and its reflected in its current pH.

@angelasheppard7197 6 лет назад
I was thinking the same thing. I guess he's saying the new water would affect the test. But in reality,I'm guessing after the test, you would have to water with rain water or something like that in order to keep the test result the same?

ateamofone yes this is confusing. I know it would effect the test but some tap waters are 8.0. So if I'm water a soil that is 6.5 ph but my water is 8.0. Will that keep plant from receiving what it is trying to get from the soil.

The pH of the water + baking soda should be over 7. Goes to the comment about the accuracy of the meters.
@KittyKarenpoo
@KittyKarenpoo 4 года назад
This depends upon the PH of the water. That varies from place to place and even season to season. I know that in Central Ohio the PH of city water is about 7.5, but when we get runoff from the fields it can go up to almost 8. Distilled water might hover in the 7 range. Other cities might have acidic water. I agree that it was odd that his baking soda water only showed low 7s, but that would indicate that he either put just a few sprinkles of baking soda in or his water is exceptionally acidic. Hell, it means both, to be honest about it.
@Rabbit.760
@Rabbit.760 3 года назад
Alkaline in the water can make your ph sit stubbornly even if its acidic. Its very confusing, but a ph above 7 and Alkalinity are 2 different things. Alkaline in the water will raise ph but raising ph will not add Alkaline in the water

Thank you for your helpful & well-organised video . Would you happen to have an idea on how to get a soil pH meter ( pair of probes- 1 steel & 1 copper) to start re-working? It suddenly stopped & this seems to be a common phenomenon. I wonder if it may be due to oxidation of the probe tips- someone said they used steel wool to clean them (which they claimed worked) though I’m afraid as whether that abrasive process could damage them (further). Would you have any advice to offer on this? Thanks for your time on this & look forward to avidly perusing the remainder of your series!

If I'd made my soil to what I wanted (in terms of compost, manure, top soil, whatever), and was looking at 6.7 PH, I'd definitely not add anything to it, unless I had some specific crop issue, such as blueberries or potatoes (ph lower). Almost every crop will like PH 6.7, including those who like high PH, such as cantaloupes. If you got it down to 6.3, (maybe by adding a little peat and manure) damn near everything would like it. Even acidic-loving plants do well at that range. I mean to add that adding fertilizer to change PH is a super bad idea. Keep it as organic and non-intrusive as possible. Personal favorites would be crushed limestone to raise it and peat moss to lower it. Then your fertilizer schedule is untampered. If you use fertilizer to change PH, you will just burn your plants up and possibly even make the soil unusable.

Thank you for your videos hey are well done. I have same ph tester as your own one. And I was studying ph If our soil say is high and we water with water that is treated to be let's 6.0. How would I know how much water to add to change the soil? Or do I just treat the soil myself. Also when I treat my water with ph-up. Or ph-down. I find that after I treat the water and get it to 6.5 or 6.0. When I come back a few hours later it is back to 7.0. I got my ph up and down on amazon so i was worried I bought some scam. Also adjusting the soil just seems hard because I have one section near the pool that I had the best amount of sun but the ground soil is a whopping 9 ph. I would think just watering with tap water would bring it down eventually but if I add an acidic amendment how deep do I go and how much It is this test just concerned about the ph of the water mixture I'm feeding the plants. Example if my soil is 8.0 but I feed with 6.5 water will the plant be able to grab what it needs. ?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 6 лет назад
So that is such a hard question to answer and there really isnt one as pH changes slowly. I would work acidic amendment down a foot and try and do it in fall. Mass amounts of peat moss will help. Also really amend the direct planting hole with peat in the 9 area. I might suggest also getting the liquid drop pH kits too. The binding of nutrients doesnt come and go that easily with a watering. The chemical ferts that are water soluble that can be absorb by leaves will help too.
@tommysanfilippo3165
@tommysanfilippo3165 4 года назад
2 years old I know. My best guess is you used tap water and tap water has buffers in it from the treatment plant so it keeps a 7.0 PH. It’s very hard to get tap water to PH without sitting out for days and or adding a ton of PH up to down.

For the rapitest digital soil pH meter (the orange one): It say in bold letters on the exterior of the package: "Use the meter only in soil. Do not place the probe into liquids of any kind." Do you really want the pH of your soil with distilled water? You don’t water you garden with distilled water. The plants experience the pH of soil and the water you provide. This water is out of the tap. If your water is acidic that is what your plants will experience.
