To be CLEAR... there are "shoot through" umbrellas that are designed to, you know... shoot through. That umbrella is NOT a shoot through. Also... you get different looks depending on the type of umbrella. Otherwise... great video. Love both Tyler's work and yours.
@@MikeGrayFilm For sure, man. That metering with the umbrella faced the wrong direction cracked me up. I started on the shoot through using speedlights when I started 13 years ago or so. That said, whatever gives you the results you're looking for, is the way to go, as I'm sure you both know.
I think i get what he is referring to, i have seen this as well with a normal umbrella. But the intent is to make the light softer and larger when it hits a wall (preferably white) behind the photographer
Goddamn, you continue to be a massive source of inspiration. I feel like I could spend eternity just chasing a fraction of your talent. Bravo, and thank you and Tyler for teaching me how (at least try) to develop my own ideas.
1. "Shoot through umbrellas are a thing" - he hasn't got one and doesn't appear to know what one is! Maybe a brain-fart moment? 2. The "wraparound" effect is due to the size of the light modifier and power of the light. 3. "It's not about the shutter speed, it's about the flash duration" - it's literally about both.
Great video Mike that's my hero there and I don't mean the Broncolor light though they are good. I'm having to start in the same manner Tyler did, but we all have to start somewhere I've saved this video and took a lot from it. Nice work.
Yooo, so happy to have this video. This is one of the first things I commented about in one of your earlier videos because I was interested in learning about strobes with film cameras. So happy that you made this video
Great video as usual, i was excited when i saw the group pic and thought it may be a video on lighting groups. There is very little on you tube about group lighting, this would be an amazing learning, food for thought?
What’s he on about when I he says people are shooting with the umbrella the other way around? Surely they aren’t, unless it’s a shoot through umbrella. Or is he joking? 😅
People actually do that, though lol. It's supposed to be to bounce the light coming from the umbrella into a wall to soften it up even further. Then the light has to travel all the way back to your subject. I would personally never do it. If I'm bouncing my light in to a wall it's going to be my bare light.
I'm a bit confused about the parabolic umbrella, because as far as I know the ability for light to wrap a round a subject is simply the result of the size of the modifier, and not it being parabolic. Also if truly parabolic, it should create a more narrow light by definition. Also there are shoot through umbrellas that essentially function as a softbox, but allow for more ambient light as more light bounces around.
Sitting at my folks place in MS watching TV and just saw that KFC spot. Salute to you! Keep doing your thang and keep hustling. I was like “yoooo, that’s Mike Gray!” Haha.
Mike, I remember when you asked for "Flash" recommendations, and now look at you, shooting broncolor. Man, I want to be like you! Great video dude, good to see you and your mentor on video together.
I was just sitting there not really paying attention but watching it because I couldn’t skip it and at the very end it pans like barely above the chin and I’m like 🤔 waiiiittt a minute was that Mike Gray!???
@@MikeGrayFilm yeah that was it! Like I said I wasn’t paying attention but at the end I saw your chin and could’ve swore it was you but by then the ad was over 😂😂
