Thanks so much! I have been using flat square auto putty knives for painting and I can get non-stainless for quite a bit less than stainless. However, they really rust. I did not know that stainless can discolour as well so this is good info for me. I also note the addition of silicone and veggie oil to your directions below. Good to know.

Do you have an opinion on KPL Knife Shield for use on the blade? The description says it also polishes. Would this remove steel from the blade? Also, do you have thoughts on using the regular KPL oil to protect the blade, or should that only be used on the pivot and bearings?
@TheKnifeLifeChannel
@TheKnifeLifeChannel 2 года назад
I haven't used KPL Knife Shield before. Maybe I'll pick up some and give it a try and make a video out of it. Just looking at the description it looks like it should theoretically be fine for use on the blade itself.

So the quick answer is slather renaissance wax over them. But I have a couple questions: are these finished blades or ones in progress, and what grit finish you are going to?

If I use my blade daily will this be enough to prevent rusting? If I keep it clean will I still need to oil it? California here. Thank you TKL.
@TheKnifeLifeChannel
@TheKnifeLifeChannel 2 года назад
The more you use your knife, the more often you will need to apply a fresh coating of your choice. I have a Wusthof chefs knife that I use on a daily basis. After each use I clean it and oil it again. It is still spot free. The key is that I dry and oil it immediately after each use. As long as you are faithful in your maintenance, you shouldn't have an issue.

How often should I apply oil in order to keep the knives from rusting?
@TheKnifeLifeChannel
@TheKnifeLifeChannel 3 года назад
It depends on how often you are using them, and what for. Cooking knives should be wiped down and oiled after every use. A knife on display or one that is rarely used can be left alone for a while. With wax, I typically touch up blades every year, but you could likely go longer.

Great video. Can you use lemon oil?
@TheKnifeLifeChannel
@TheKnifeLifeChannel 2 года назад
Citric products are used to clean metals on a regular basis, but its important to make sure that water and citric acid are not present, as they will cause corrosion. Otherwise its probably ok, but I would check it on a junk piece of steel first. I've never used lemon oil on blades before.

If you get That cooking spray in the pivot points of a folding knife you will have issues. It will eventually break down and get gummy.

Probably a dumb question but would that wax be food safe?
@TheKnifeLifeChannel
@TheKnifeLifeChannel 2 года назад
Not a dumb question. The manufacturer doesn't explicitly list that information unfortunately. I wouldn't eat a spoon of the stuff, but if you cut an apple with your knife I'd expect you would be fine. For a cooking knife I would say stick with explicitly food grade options.

@TheKnifeLifeChannel 3 года назад
Different tools for different purposes. Like I mention, I typically use the wax for blades I will not be handling often for a more long term situation. While I prefer Ren wax, there are other alternatives as well. Car wax works pretty good as well for example. Cooking spray has its own issues. One thing I missed in this video is mineral oil; its a good in between option and is also very cheap. When I get around to upgrading this video, I will discuss it in more detail.
