How to protect your car from being stolen if you have keyless entry.

If you have a car with keyless entry you need to watch this video!
When I got the Leaf, I was worried about the keyless entry system as there was no alternative. Relay theft is becoming more prevalent in the news.
Numerous CCTV videos can be found on RU-vid of cars being stolen from driveways in seconds. I decided to try a couple of faraday pouches to protect my car from relay theft.
I also thought that a metal tin would also work at blocking an RF signal and be a cheaper option, I was wrong...
Here are Amazon Affiliate links to the pouches in the video:

I just caught up on his interesting video. I keep my keys in the house in a tin I bought from a local "Cook Shop", it looks to be made from thicker metal and has a similar bottom panel. It prevents the unlocking of the car from immediately outside & starting the car when inside. I think tins work provided they are not cheap retail packaging.

Best to test any metal tins you'll be using. Mine works (Man Tin), But I keep my key in a Faraday pouch AND a metal tin. Call me paranoid if you wish.

My new A class has keyless entry, had it for 2 months and I only found out the other day that when you put the key down it goes to sleep after 3 seconds and will not work until the key detects movement. Not sure about other manufacturers but its worth trying.

DIY key fob Faraday cage. Tuna can as the container, large tuna can as the lid. Wrapped in aluminum foil because tin cans typically have a coating that prevents good electrical connection between the container and the lid.

You can just disable keyless entry, on the touchscreen just go to settings, comfort and convenience, then disable keyless entry. I have a leaf too but my parents also use my car and I can’t guarantee they won’t just leave the key out of the bag next to the front door so that’s a very easy way to stop it. :)

Keyless entry is separated from keyless starting. The car still starts with keyless entry disabled, it starts even without a battery in the FOB. It's based on an RFID chip.

Be careful, the Faraday cages stop working after a month or two - with movement the wires inside the pouch break and signals leak out/in so try them regularly and replace when they stop working.

Thanks Rob. Those pouches look neat, defeating the design of the fob. There is a non conducive coating on the metal can surfaces, to stop it rusting. This allows the lid and can to form two possible aerials, or even two parts of one aerial. The fob works at 443 MHz which has a wavelength of about 70 cm. A quarter wavelength radiator is resonant, as is any odd multiple, such as 3/4 wavelength, etc, and even if folded over, that can be an effective means of propagating RF energy, rather than absorbing it. So if part of the can is close to about 17 cm wide, and insulated from adjacent metal, it will be almost useless as a Faraday cage. The size of the can itself is roughly resonant with the fob, if you regard it as a folded piece of conductor. Measure the distance from the top to the base, for example, or measure from the top, across the base and back up to the top on the opposite side, trying different diagonals, and at least some of it will be resonant at ¼ or ¾ wavelengths. Remember too, that physically holding the can means that your body also becomes part of an aerial. A demonstration of the body being an antenna can be seen by standing just outside the normal range of the fob, and then touching the fob to the side of your head. Your head and arm become resonant with the RF signal, and that can double the fob's range.

Oh no, sorry to hear that. Did you know that you can't start it if the cable is plugged in, even if not charging. Maybe a thief wouldn't figure out how to disconnect the cable using the fob or release button. Hope you get the car back!

One question , after you enter the car and start the engine if you put back the key in the pouch is it ok ? or the car will stop again?
@RSThinks
@RSThinks 3 года назад
I just store the key in the pouch inside the house. When I'm using the car, the pouch is left at home. I would think that the car would show 'key not detected' if you started it and then put the key back in the pouch, similar to if you exit the car without turning it off with the key in your pocket.

Ok please explain the benefit of using a faraway pouch, when out shopping. When If I need the key outside the pouch when I return to car ???? ???
@RSThinks
@RSThinks 3 года назад
You probably wouldn't use one if out shopping as you would being moving the key away from the car. The pouches are useful when at home to shield the key from an attempted 'relay attack'. This is where a weak key signal is boosted to gain entry and even start the car. Does that answer your question?
@johnhodge1263

Would be interested in seeing if the pouches work with the external door button.. That's essentially the attack they relay the cars signal to the key and open the door. If the punches work with that then it's a good defence. Tin probably isn't tuned to block the RF of the fob.. That is around 443mhz

Doh! Tin foil would have been an easy one to try. Next time!
@RWBHere
@RWBHere 5 лет назад
It might not be very effective, because the foil can be at least partially resonant with the RF signal, and act as an aerial, depending upon the folded lengths and how efficiently it is wrapped around the key. Even a short gap can be an effective RF slot antenna. Please let us know how it fares. Thanks.
