Have you ever struggled with pruning before? What fruit trees are you putting in or do you have on your property?

Hey Melissa, thanks for the vid! I've a 2 year old dwarf golden delicious that has 3 long main shoots off the trunk up about 3 feet, then they "bush" out at their tops with several other branches. I'm thinking I need to prune them way down closer to the main trunk line. They're about 5/8 inch dia. and don't have any off shoots up the 3 foot till they bush out. It's kinda like I'd be starting over with them as it wasn't pruned properly by the nursery when I bought it and I didn't notice it either. Hope I gave you enough info to make a suggestion without seeing it. Thanks! Zac :)

Good video. Others "talk" about fruit spears...you are the only one that actually showed a picture of one. That was very important to me. Thank you.

Thank you for the great video! We have a wolf river apple tree, a Macintosh and an old red delicious. All of them are in desperate need of pruning but didn't know how to do it. I'll be tackling that at the end of the month.

Low branches and open vase is very cute, assuming you dont have rabbits or deer to worry about. Thats why I go with central leader and a minimum of 1 meter between groun and 1st branch. Because we have had 3ft of snow and -30 celsius in Finland...and the Fiskars saw is ok for bigger branches, but it has a really coarse cut.

So much information!!! Do glad I going your channel! We planted I each of McIntosh, honey crisp and empire apple trees last year and I now there is a jonagold or Jonathan tree here in our yard that's not been very well taken care of that I'm trying to help. And a bigger one that I don't know the type. We also planted 2 kinds of peach trees one of which I think is dying :( and we have an older plum tree too. I didn't prune at all this spring because the local nursery that I got the new ones from said I shouldn't have to this first year but I did take the fruit off the new trees. Pruning is very intimidating to me. I need to prune the old ones really well this next spring.

I'm in Florida and have 2 huge lemon trees and a medium size orange. I don't think they have ever been pruned. Should I do it all at once or take a few years to get them back in shape? Thanks, I learn so much from you!
@MelissaKNorris
@MelissaKNorris 5 лет назад
You'll want to go slow, good advice is to never remove more than about 25% of the tree in one year. I'd start with the damaged/diseased, criss-crossing or inner facing branches first and then after those are removed, go with the next ones. Good luck!

Is this the same process for other fruit trees? Great video, looks like I need to get out and do some pruning.
@MelissaKNorris
@MelissaKNorris 5 лет назад
Yes, the shaping of the tree would be the only difference if you have a central leader (think a pyramid shape instead of opening up like a vase) but we have all our's pruned to modified central leader (this video) that is a hybrid of the open vase (where you remove everything from the center so it looks open like a vase). I find modified central leader has worked great for our fruit trees.

Thank you! Great info 😀 We have a three year dwarf apple tree. We had lots of blooms last spring, but didn't get any fruit. Maybe it's too young. Anyway, should we give it a boost this time with compost? What would you recommend? Thank you again, and have a great day!
@MelissaKNorris
@MelissaKNorris 5 лет назад
If you didn't get any fruit it's a pollination issue, you need to bring in another cross-pollinating variety. I wouldn't use compost but this will help you out (scroll down to the pollination section) melissaknorris.com/5-tips-to-starting-an-orchard-and-growing-fruit/

If your blossoms wilted down first, you also likely had a fire fireblight issue.

We live in Arizona so citrus, pomegranate, fig. Have been wondering if and when to prune them as there is a cold season but not as long and dormant as what I've been used to with seasons up north. Then 2 nice seasons spring and fall, and nothing grows well in the summer, very opposite :).
@MelissaKNorris
@MelissaKNorris 5 лет назад
Hi Nicole, while your season is shorter you still want to prune in the winter, after your harvest time but before the buds begin to leaf/flower out.
@Hukolb11
@Hukolb11 5 лет назад
@@MelissaKNorris Thank you! We may have missed it this year as we moved in a week or two ago, picking the last of the fruit and it has already blossomed with next season's fruit. The leaves never drop on citrus in "fall" here, but fig and pomegranite do. Next year!

But don’t you need some low branches for critters so they don’t eat the bark on your trees?

So I just bought a house and was told I have 2 apple trees. The neighbor said "one is eating apples and one is baking apples". I know nothing about this. He said they only fruit every other year. I don't believe the last owner did anything with it for the last 5 years since he bought it. I'll use this video to try and prune it down I guess Is it too late here in Michigan to do this and should I wait until next winter? Any help would he good Again I know nothing about these trees. Don't even know what kind. Just know ones baking and ones eating, whatever that means.

I wondered about that comment. Based off what I've read and watched, pruning is supposed to be done in the winter, or after all leaves and first freeze. Idk..

Interesting, just watched another video of a well known and successful Canadian permaculture orchardist that says you WANT your fruit bearing limbs off the trunk pointing downward not up.

I've had them split and break which then damages the tree so I don't.

@@MelissaKNorris Which makes perfect sense. Curious if his zone in CA deals with just snow and not really thick ice buildup. I wasn't saying you are wrong and you laid out your reasoning in the video very well. I enjoy the information you put out, has helped me get started in my garden.

The tried and true method to know if your tree has been pruned back enough is if you can comfortably throw a cat threw the middle
@zachlloyd9392

Saw a video where a guy said cat for dwarf, dog for semi-dwarf and semi-standard, and a calf for standard trees. I love those kinds of visualizations, makes it easy to get an idea of spacing.
