Prune cherry trees this way to grow big, healthy, and strong trees and get the maximum production from your trees. The correct cherry pruning technique is required to grow lots of cherries, otherwise the tree will keep getting taller and taller. Prune the tree the same way the first year, second year, and third year by cutting the tree 18 inches from the last cut. After 3 years, maintain the tree by cutting off any branching growing towards the inside or dead branches. Keep the tree growing outwards and you will grow a lot of cherries

This was the best fruit tree pruning video I've seen. I loved the examples of what the trees look like at one, two, and three years. So many videos just show one round of pruning without the context of what we're doing vs. the effect it will have. Wish I saw this video five years ago. I have always under-pruned my cherry tree. Now it's super tall and produces very few cherries. I guess I'll just have to start at the ends and work backwards.

You live and you learn. Good luck with correcting it! Oh hey maybe look into others ways to induce branching! I'm not sure if it works with cherries but there is something called notching, where you make a slit right underneath a bud that you want to grow out to become a branch.

Same here. Deer got into mine Spring 2023 and ate off some side branches, making it lop-sided. And it had a codominant leader, with one going off sideways, making it lean even more. I cut off the extra leader and pruned what was left best that I could, and the tree has come back great. But it's growing too tall and top-heavy. It's probably taller than I am right now. Hate to lose a year or more of growth and make it short again, but if I don't prune it, I'll have to stake it again, as fast as it's growing on top.

It's a lot of fun and I love it but it also has lots of challenges that I never thought, flooding, rabbits eating wires under the cars, gophers eating newly planted plants, mechanical breakdowns, irrigation pipe leaks, etc etc etc lol

Don't worry about it. It really becomes second nature. He didn't mention it but try to make your cuts at a slight angle preferably away from the nearest bud so that water can run off.

Hi Jag, I have a new Cherry tree, bought it last year, it grew fruit but all dropped off except one and it was delicious. I did nitivmce ut had black little worm like crawlies on the leaves so, Googled it and they rec omende yo use lime in my soil. Its growing In a 30 litre pot in my fruit cage. Very good video with specific detail& Easy to inderstand steps on how to prune a cherry tree. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊

Wow! Thank you so much for this video, I bought 3 cherry trees a month ago. The sweet cherries are one long trunk about 6 feet tall and I didn't understand why it had no other branches. The nursery didn't prune them I guess! I will definitely be pruning my cherry trees now.

Best video. I bought my property and the previous owner had planned cherry trees. I had no idea what variety they were and just started rewatching YT videos. I thought for sure I had messed something up because none of the trees had a leader. 🤣 Looks like my trees are perfection because none of the branches have these issues. Thank you previous owner for knowing what you were doing and now all i have to do is maintain lol

Glad you like the videos, stone fruits such as cherries peaches nectarines are pruned with open canopy, no leader. Apples and pears are prune with a leader.

We planted bare root cherry trees during last spring. It never grew any branches and it's growing directly in the upward direction. I'm so glad I found your video, because I was thinking the cherry trees weren't going to make it through the winter. I've never heard anything suggesting how to prune them. Your videos have been getting better and better, and definitely thorough. Thank you!

Should you only prune in winter? What about summer prunning to help keep height down. I have so much growth after winter prune.

Great video! Wish I saw it last year. I planted a bare root cherry tree about 2” without pruning. At the end of the season it grew an additional 5” all one branch. It’s just starting to wake up now. How much should I trim?

Thanks Jag. I just planted three bare root cherry trees. I've been trying to absorb everything I can about them and heard about the open center pruning method. Your video was very clear. I like how you gave measurements to go by and also had great examples of what it should look like after the growing season. They are just starting to leaf out for the first time so I better get out there. I was going to treat it like a plum tree so it's important to know about the fruit being on 2 year and older wood.

I really enjoy watching your channel. I’ve planted 3 sour cherry trees recently. They’re about 5’ tall and have many branches every 6” or so up to the top. Some branches have even green berries. Looks like they have never been pruned before at the nursery. I’d appreciate an advice how to prune them at this stage. Thanks

I just planted 9 bare root fruit trees ~ apple, pear, peach, and cherry. I'm laughing at myself now for having picked out the tallest, most mature looking specimens, only to have to massacre them down to a short stick. Thank you for this excellent demonstration. I especially appreciate you showing what to do in subsequent years. One question......do I cut my other fruit trees as dramatically as you did with the cherry? Thank you!

Very interesting and easy to follow. Video! I have a question: do you follow the same pruning rules for a sour Cherry that is grown as an espalier? For example, you cut off branches that grow horizontal and parallel to the ground…but for an espalier cherry tree, would the horizontal branches be saved to tie to the wire? Thanks.

Hey! This was really interesting and helpful. I’m curious how i should prune a bareroot tree that’s already quite tall and only has top growth? The tree I got is already about 1.5m and only has branches on the top ~30cm. I imagine it’s about 2 years old or so. It was cheap so I’m not too precious about aggressively pruning but Im worried if I chop the entire top off and leave no lateral branches, will it kill the tree?
